爱莎优秀学生专访——孙玉涛

“我们必须知道,我们必将知道。”


1900年,巴黎国际数学代表大会上, 德国数学界的无冕之王大卫·希尔·伯特 (David Hilbert)发表题为《数学问题》的著名演讲,其中提出的十九世纪全球最重要的23个数学问题,在30年后,让不可知论者在科学的光芒下晦暗蒙羞。


30年、50年、100年······当科技的发展飞速向前,人类的脑力再难以企及科学的边界,又是什么在决定世界行进的轨迹?运转的规则?请带好这个问题,与我们一起走进本期飞鸟集的主人公——武汉爱莎文华学校G10学生,孙玉涛。

"Wir müssen wissen, wir werden wissen."


In 1900, at the International Congress of Mathematics in Paris, David Hilbert, the undisputed king of German mathematics, gave a famous speech entitled "The Mathematical Problems", in which he proposed 23 of the most important mathematical problems of the world in the nineteenth century. 30 years later, these significant speech have put agnosticism to shame in the light of science.


After 30 years, 50 years, 100 years··· When the development of science and technology moves forward at a rapid pace, and the brainpower  of human can no longer reach the limit of science, what is determining the the rules of the world? Please take this question with you and join us in this episode of student interview. G10 student of ISA Wenhua Wuhan Secondary School, Thomas Sun, would like to share his points of view.

EVERY GENIOUS IS NOT BORN TO BE

每当谈起我的数学成绩,

我从不归功于我的天赋


合上窗,隔绝操场上的熙攘,一场与古希腊大数学家的“神交”就此登场。虽然只是在小学4年级,孙玉涛对数学的热爱就足以让他将欧基里德视为人生偶像。


作为美籍华裔的他,接受了6年地道的美式早期教育,在少时课余更多的闲暇时光中,孙玉涛将自学数学变成了一种生活习惯,而这种对数学持久的兴趣与自学习惯,使得他在10年级就已经学完了大学数学专业的全部基础知识,一路斩获多项国际国内数学竞赛金奖,并且具备研究生阶段独立撰写科研论文的能力,佳绩不俗。

Closing the window and isolating himself from the hustle and bustle from the playground, a meeting with the great mathematician of Ancient Greece will begin. Although he was only in the fourth grade, Thoams's love of mathematics made him regard Euclid as his life model.


As a Chinese American, he received 6-year of authentic American early education. In most of his leisure time after school, Thomas learnt math diligently as if it was his daily routine. The enduring interest in mathematics and self-study habits made him complete the university level of mathematics in the 10th grade. Now he has the abilities to compete in international and domestic mathematical competitions, and write scientific research papers independently at the post-graduate level, which have all made remarkable achievements.

近日,孙玉涛还荣获了“全球院士挑战赛”数学领域论文比赛一等奖。此次大赛有来自全国著名的公立名校和国际学校的优秀选手参赛角逐,论文评奖由来自剑桥大学、牛津大学、哈佛大学等世界名校院士做评委,研究内容包含生物健康、医药和制药产业、数学前沿与大数据应用等当前全球面临的12个热点领域,对世界现在及未来发展的方向具有重要的研究意义。

Recently, Thomas also won the first prize in Global Academician Forum. The forum was participated by outstanding contestants from famous public schools and international schools in China, and the papers were judged by academicians from Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard and other world-famous universities. The research content includes 12 hot topics in the world, such as bio-health, medicine and pharmaceutical industry, mathematics frontier and data application, which is of important research significance to the present and future development of the world.

孙玉涛提交的是全英文论文,主题译成中文意为《一种计算随机动态系统状态转换首达时概率密度的快速算法》。


论文摘要中写道:气候系统等非线性动态系统在受到噪声影响时,经常会从一种可稳定状态转换到另一种状态。这种状态转换的首次出现通常用首达时来表征,其在许多工程和科学领域具有重要意义。


我们开发了一种高效的方法来计算随机动力系统中状态转换首达时的概率密度。该方法涉及求解一个奇异积分方程,其结果可确定首达时的概率密度。论文提供了一些数值示例,并将其应用于一个简化的温盐环流系统,以说明和验证所提出的方法。

The English essay presented by Thomas is named: A fast algorithm for computing probability density of the first passage time for state transition in stochastic dynamical systems. 


Nonlinear dynamical systems, such as climate systems, often switch from one metastable state to another when subject to noise. The first occurrence of such state transition, which is usally characterized by the first passage time, has gained enormous interest in many engineering and scientific fields. 


We develop an efficient approach to compute probability density of the first passage time for state transitions in stochastic dynamical systems. The approach involves solving a singular integral equation which determines probability density of the first passage time. Some numerical examples, with application to a simplified thermohaline circulation system, are provided to illustrate and verify the proposed approach.

"Just like every student who has been showing his talents in maths since childhood, competing and preparing for exams, writing papers and then becoming a professor in an university seems to be a smooth pathway to success, but after taking part in the Forum, our Head of School, Ms. Juliana Jia told me that becoming a real mathematician should never be statisfied at the level of personal achievement, just as the original purpose of the Challenge is to select future scientists and leaders who will change the world, and who can truly give back to society in the future, which gave me a new sense of mission for my life goals." Thomas said.

TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

当谈及数学对于自己的意义,孙玉涛告诉我们这是一门可以解决世界上所有问题的神奇学科,如果你认为它不能,那就是你格局的问题。“在当时,牛顿和莱布尼兹发明的微积分只能用来推导物理问题,现在却是计算火箭加速度最不可或缺的方式。我相信在这个世界上,还有许多数学难题没有得到解决,未来,我希望能用数学去研究更多关于计算机、智能制造方面的前沿知识,让世界和人类的生活变得更加美好。”

When talking about what maths means to him, Thomas tells us it's an amazing subject that can solve all the world's problems, and if you think it can't, that's a problem with your life outlook. "At the time, the calculus invented by Newton and Leibniz could only be used to derive physical problems, but now it is the most indispensable way to calculate the acceleration of rockets. I believe that there are still many mathematical puzzles in this world that have not been solved, and in the future, I hope to use mathematics to study more cutting-edge knowledge about computers and intelligent manufacturing, so as to make the world and human life better."

作为今年新高一的学生,从公立名校转轨来到国际赛道,孙玉涛对选择加入武汉爱莎的原因按照他的话来说就是“双向奔赴”。在之前,孙玉涛攀登数学高峰的道路不亚于暗夜疾行,与同龄人之间拉开的差距,更需要他选择一所具有包容度、自由度、高格局、强大学术资源支持与名师引领的国际学校。

As a new studens this year, Thomas is the student who choose to shift from a well-known public school to an international school. His reasons for joining in ISA Wuhan were, in his words, "great minds think alike". Previously, his efforts to learning maths was no less than rushing in dark nights, and the gap between him and his peers made it all the more reasonalble for him to choose an international school with the inclusivity, freedom, education mission, abundant academic resources and excellent teachers to lead his way.


"I have never thought of myself as someone who is very obsessed with maths, but rather very curious about it, and I was lucky that my parents and schooling did a good job of protecting this curiosity when I was growing up, and after coming to ISA Wuhan, the school gave me the full support and freedom to learn at my own pace and in my own way, and at the Programme, I also met many students who have similar academic pursuits as me and are full of perseverance in their passionate subjects, which also allows me to challenge maths and myself more boldly."

Dr. Yi Le is Thomas's homeroom teacher and the Director of High Talent Cultivation Programme. As the comprehensive instructor of this programme, he and the team of doctoral supervisors provide each students with tailor-made career development plans. All of these make Thomas feel that he is one step closer to his dream school.

"I don't think the students selected for the Programme are all gifted." Dr. Yi Le said. "If I must say they are gifted in any way, it is their long-term focus and perseverance in what they love. I think he will be a very down-to-earth people's scientific explorer in the future and will be one of the best in any professions."

MAKE FRIENDS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

我结交了来自全世界的朋友,收获温暖一生的珍贵友谊


孙玉涛从小就喜欢田径,他告诉我们自己刚加入武汉爱莎,就立马报名了田径校队,从小练习长跑的他把在学科钻研时的那股“狠劲”也用在了体育锻炼上,还说自己非常享受突破耐力极限后的那种成就感,和学习很像。他对中国文学、世界史、哲学的丰富兴趣,也在武汉爱莎得到很好的释放。即便是学业压力再大,拔尖创新人才培养基地的学生也会被要求选修1-2门专业以外的课程,就像贾校长所说,要将科学创新精神渗透到学生学习、生活、思维、文化与艺术的每个细胞中,而武汉爱莎将成为孵化未来科技创新人才的摇篮。

Thomas has loved athletics since he was a child, and he told us that as soon as he joined ISA Wuhan, he was excited to sign up for the track and field school team. Having practised long-distance running since he was a child, he puts the same "toughness" he had when he was studying his academic subjects into his sports activities, and says he enjoys the sense of achievement that comes from breaking through the limits of his endurance, which is very much the same as studying. His rich interest in Chinese literature, world history and philosophy is also well released in ISA Wuhan. Even with the academic pressure, the students of the Programme are asked to take 1 to 2 courses outside their majors. As Ms. Juliana said, the spirit of science and innovation should be influenced into students' learning, life, mindset, culture and art, and ISA Wuhan will be the cradle of incubating future science and technology innovative talents.

The shy boy who used to bury his head in solving problems, the lonely boy who used to study hard in the dark, after coming to ISA Wuhan, he has become more active in the group English speech, after-school evening tutoring, literature appreciation class and club activities, you can see Thomas has become more and more confident, more and more talkative, and it makes him more willing to use his own warmth and patience with his friends, bringing help and care to teachers and his family.

What determines the rules of the world? I believe you may be able to come up with your own answers after reading this interview. Just like Thomas, who is actively preparing for the AMC12 Competition, it is no longer the black and white test papers or the golden medals that are arranged in his life prospect, but the unsolved scientific research problems and a series of development challenges that the world is facing. Thomas, just like his life model David Hill Burt, is storing up his strength to make changes to the world, just for that sound:
