A total of 2,139 teams applied for this year's Yau Award. After three rounds of judging and the semi-final held at Tsinghua University on 2 November, Thomas won the First Prize in the Mathematics Region (out of a total of 12 nationwide), and was successfully selected to compete in the Grand Finals, being the only student from Hubei amongst all the six disciplines.
Yau Prize is open to secondary school students around the world and covers the six basic disciplines of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computing and Economic and Financial Modelling, and Thomas competed in the Mathematics div. According to his instructor, unlike general subject competitions, the Yau Prize promotes innovative thinking and teamwork, abandoning test papers and standard answers, allowing students to participate in the competition by submitting research reports, with scientists from around the world serving as judges or advisors. ‘It's great to be shortlisted. The global final will be held on 7 December at Tsinghua University, and it will still be a full English defence, so I will continue to prepare well.’ Thomas shared with us.
