Adam Smith 亚当斯密

Many people are familiar with Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations. It is suggested that you read The Theory of Moral Sentiments, which actually lays an ethical foundation for the rationality of the market economy. Economics did not exist in the time of Adam Smith (1723-1790), who was a professor of moral philosophy at the University of Glasgow. He preferred this work of moral philosophy, which was revised in about five editions during his lifetime, while The Wealth of Nations, known as the first work of economics, was published in only two editions.

The two seemingly contradictory works are in fact intrinsically related, both aiming to answer the social question of their time, namely how a society of natural freedom system was possible, just as the great Newton mechanics answered the question of how the universe works in harmony with the order ordained by the Creator.

It is recommended that students in upper elementary grades can start reading the simplified or illustrated version of The Wealth of Nations. Secondary school students can read the whole thing, or even challenge to read the English version.

I encourage everyone to read this book. Because the essence of western economics is to learn how to allocate and make decisions in the face of scarce resources.

Reading the Wealth of Nations and its basis The Theory of Moral Sentiments, you will understand the definition of a virtuous person from a new perspective. In the pursuit of individual value, your positive externality will benefit the people around you. This is also the person who contributes to society and can make a difference to the world to bring positive energy to society.

        很多人都熟悉亚当斯密《国富论》。建议大家同时阅读《道德情操论》，它实际上为市场经济的合理性奠定了伦理基础。在亚当·斯密（1723年—1790年）那个时代经济学是不存在的，而斯密本身也是格拉斯哥大学的道德哲学教授。他自己也更加偏爱这本道德哲学著作，在其生前大概共修订了5版，而被誉为经济学开山之作的《国富论》不过出了两版。

        两部看似相互矛盾的著作其实是内在联系的，都是为了回答那个时代的社会问题，即“自然的自由制度”的社会如何可能，这就如同伟大的牛顿力学回答了宇宙如何在造物主安排的秩序下和谐运转的问题。

        建议小学高年级的学生可以开始阅读《国富论》的简易版或插图版。中学生可以阅读全部，甚至挑战英文版。

        我鼓励大家阅读这本书越好。因为西方经济学的根本就是学习在稀缺的资源面前，如何去做配置和决策行为的动机。

        读了这个国富论以及他的基座道德情操论，你会从新的角度理解“一个道德高尚的人”的定义。在追求个体价值的过程中，你的正外部性（positive externality）会惠及你周遭的人群。这也是对社会有贡献，能够给社会带来正能量的make a difference to the world的人。

The author, Alan Macfarlane was my PhD advisor at University of Cambridge. Cultures differ from each other and misunderstandings take place in communications, which can lead to conflicts. This book provides readers with a perspective to understand the game between major powers in the world. 

It is highly recommended in my book list to students in high schools or even middle schools. It is beneficial for them to learn about the differences between cultures and the international society, and realise their pathway to becoming future leaders. It is an essential step to contribute their efforts to building China’s image as a friend to the world.  

        这是我剑桥导师Alan Macfarlane的著作。“不同文化圈会信守不同的文明，当互不理解成为常态，冲突必然会发生。”这本书能够帮助读者理解发生在当下的大国博弈。
