The Adventures of Onionhead by Gianni Rodari

Grade 2 to 5

Gianni Rodari, one of the greatest children's writers of the 20th century, was awarded the International Hans Christian Andersen Prize, the highest award in the world of children's literature. In his children's literature, we feel as if we are in a real life situation, except that the protagonists of life have changed from human beings to individual fruits and vegetables. Reading his works, we feel as if the stories are happening around us, and that the stories in these fairy tales are the real experiences of people in real life. It is both realistic and beautiful. On the one hand, it gives us a glimpse of real life in the stories, and on the other hand, it tells us that although life is full of hopelessness, there is always a bright future ahead. No matter how hard life is, no matter how many setbacks and trials you go through, please believe that a bright and beautiful future will come. For the warmth and innocence of the heart is the greatest source of hope and light.

The book is organised into three divs on these themes: 'Confucius the Man', 'Fun Reading the Analects' and 'Confucius' Circle of Friends'. Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang

Grade 8 to 9

Good thoughts make good stories. The title of the book is "The Story of Your Life". A person's life is like a third party telling a story. The author gives his answer. As the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis says, language determines the way people see the world, and this book is a perfect embodiment of this hypothesis. Non-linear language determines that the seven-limb bucket sees the world in a non-linear way as well. The text is also so marvellous in its claims about behavioural theory that the completion of behaviour is the embodiment of ritual, and that ritual is the future that has become a reality.

Recommended by Mr. Lambert Wang

 Upper School Math Teacher

China in the Countryside by Fei Xiaotong

Grade 8 to 9

Since ancient times, China has been a purely rural and agricultural region, and the Chinese civilisation that emerged from it has a strong local flavour, very different from the Western civilisation where commerce and industry are the main economic activities. It is perhaps only by truly embracing and understanding this 'earthy' vernacular that we can more accurately understand the real China and, in so doing, understand ourselves as rooted in Chinese civilisation, a knowledge and understanding that is extremely scarce for our students.

Recommended by Ms. Sifan Kong

Upper School Chinese Teacher

The Family by Bajin

Grade 7 to 9

Mr. Ba Jin once said this in his preface: Youth is a beautiful thing, so let it be a source of inspiration to me. Youth is passionate, a capital of struggle, and Mr. Ba Jin's 'Home' gives you a sense of the power of youth. Mr. Ba Jin wrote this essay when he was young, and although Mr. Ba Jin did not feel very good about this essay in the end, it shows the true feelings of Mr. Ba Jin's heart when he was young. The whole text revolves around three people, Gao Juexin, Gao Jumin and Gao Juehui. The curtain opens on a realistic view of the feudal Republic. The main character, Juehui, is different from the others in that he has a more advanced mind, more delicate emotions and an unyielding heart. After experiencing too many sorrows and joys of the people around him, witnessing the lives of his brothers that are out of his control, and being stung by the superstition of feudalism that comes flying around, he is finally determined to leave this place that is called home, but is actually a "narrow cage". "The only person who can break the shackles of reality is you. The only person who can overthrow the shackles of reality is yourself, no one else.

Five Thousand Years of Chinese Art by Yang Qi

 Grade 5 and above

This book, Five Thousand Years of Chinese Art, is a general reading of art for the general public written by Professor Yang Qi of Tsinghua University. It included brilliant paintings, elegant heritage, and a journey into 5,000 years of beauty in 24 dynasties. To regain cultural confidence, one should start by understanding traditional Chinese art. The author, Yang Qi, is a professor in the Department of Art History and Theory at Tsinghua University's School of Fine Arts, and has long been dedicated to popularising art for the general public, hoping that traditional art will be taken seriously by the nation.

Seeing by Chai Jing

 Grade 7 to 9

Seeing is an autobiographical work about the ten-year journey of the famous journalist and presenter Chai Jing, which is both a personal confession of her growth and, to some extent, a memoir of the ten-year changes in Chinese society. In the intervening decade, Chai Jing can be found at the scene of almost every major event, including SARS, the Wenchuan earthquake and the Beijing Olympics ....... In the book, she records the moving details that are submerged in the grand narrative, leaving a personal footnote to the times. As always, Chai sees and records the individuals in the news who have left a strong impression on her life, each deeply embedded in the world, and no one can be a mere spectator. The people and events recorded in this book are their lives, as well as yours and mine.
