EY1- EY4  Programme of Inquiry (POI)

In the Early Years, EY1-EY4 complete four units of inquiry throughout a school year with at least two units under the transdisciplinary themes “Who We Are” and “How We Express Ourselves”, while EY4 completes five units as they transition into the primary school.


幼儿园小小班(EY1)到中班(EY4)阶段,学生们每个学期将要完成四个探究单元的学习, 其中两个单元必须是 “我们是谁”以及“我们如何表达自己”。为了更好地衔接小学课程,幼儿园大班(EY4)的学生们必须完成五个探究单元的学习。


The Early Years units have specifically been developed to promote and provide opportunities for children to inquire into important concepts.

This is why the units have been developed not as themes but around big ideas of conceptual importance, so there is not one path that children can go on but instead children can create their own paths for their learning.

Timetable

All students in EY1-EY4 undertake a programme within six subject groups. These subject areas are guided within the IB Primary Years Programme requirements and serve to ensure a balanced curriculum and holistic student development.

We provide daily Chinese / English lessons. Each language lesson has two different classes, one for native speakers and one for non-native speakers. We do this to ensure each student receives differentiated education so they can maximize their progress.

B. Unit of Inquiry (UOI) 探究单元

During the Unit of Inquiry lesson, students explore meaningful Central Ideas within a transdisciplinary framework. This provides students with the opportunity to learn about real-world issues while developing their knowledge, conceptual understanding, and skills related to all 6 subjects of the IB PYP.

Additionally, students will be able to put what they have learned into Action. When students put what they have learned into practice the learning has a lasting effect, students develop confidence and become eager to learn more.

• Learning Letter Formation - Using different multi-sensory methods, children learn how to form and write the letters.


Blending  - Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.


• Identifying Sounds in Words   - Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.


 Tricky Words - Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.

1. Number (which includes whole numbers, operations, and relations)


Representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers, initially with sets of objects; prior experiences, and new learning.


2. Geometry, Spatial Relations, and Measurement


Describing shapes and space. More learning time in ISA Wuhan is devoted to numbers than to other topics.


• Students use numbers, including written numerals, to represent quantities and to solve quantitative problems, such as counting objects in a set; counting out a given number of objects; comparing sets or numerals; and modeling simple joining and separating situations with sets of objects, or eventually with equations such as 5 + 2 = 7 and 7 – 2 = 5.


KG students should see addition and subtraction equations, and student writing of equations in Early Years is encouraged, but it is not required.


• Students describe their physical world using geometric ideas (e.g., shape, orientation, spatial relations) and vocabulary.


They identify, name, and describe basic two -dimensional shapes, such as squares, triangles, circles, rectangles, and hexagons, presented in a variety of ways (e.g., with different sizes and orientations), as well as three-dimensional shapes such as cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres.


They use basic shapes and spatial reasoning to model objects in their environment and to construct more complex shapes.

Home Learning (homework) should only enhance classroom lesson practice. It is mostly related to the units of inquiry. Home Learning is not just new learning, but also a time to reinforce skills or complete projects.

Home learning (homework) should be seen as a way of enhancing formative learning development. Activities may be extensions and enrichments of material explained in class or they may also include additional practice or research. The following is a general guide for our home learning programme.

Through the ISA Wuhan Early Years program your child will develop all the foundational skills needed to ensure a head-start at the Primary School. Additionally, your child will develop a love for learning as we don’t block a child’s natural excitement for exploration, we re-direct it and use it for our Teaching and Learning by facilitating age-appropriate play and inquiry-based learning activities
