Editorial’s Note:

People who are familiar with IB will know Art is no longer subsidiary course beneath others. So Art has such high position in IB and how can students do well? Today let’s listen to Ms. Maria Anikina’s interpretation.

Art has an essential place in IB education. Can you tell us that in your opinion, what does art education mean to a child’s development?

The importance of creativity is well recognised amongst educators across time and the world. My two favourite phrases are: “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” — Albert Einstein. Visual Arts or Art and Design is a creative subject.

Art is an essential part of any curriculum; in fact, it is the heart of any curriculum. It encourages students to explore, build and develop their creativity, imagination, the capability to express themselves visually in many forms, think critically, appreciate, analyse and evaluate their work and the work of others, solve problems, plan strategically and the ability to adapt to changes. These are skills students can take and use in real-life situations as well as transform and use in the other subjects.

What’s the difference between an IB Visual Arts education and painting and Visual Arts in the traditional education model? What have we achieved at BIBS with art education?

No matter which curriculum it is, the Visual Arts remain the same: exploring different cultures, styles and movements in time frames, experimenting with 2D and 3D materials, techniques and media. The difference would be the framework, subject specifications and the exam board requirements and expectations.

Art in IB is not a stand-alone subject, as well any other subjects, it integrates with other subjects and takes subject knowledge and skills outside of a classroom, it expands students understanding of the outside world and communities, this is what is called a whole-person education.

What are the achievements of art education for us at BIBS?

Our main educational achievement at BIBS this year is the introduction of an e-portfolio across MYP grades, which will gradually prepare our students for the workload and expectations of the Diploma Program. I would think we are pioneers in doing it. Another achievement is taking our students art into the community and serving the community by delivering our visual messages of love, care and support. All MYP students’ artwork was sent to support WuHan, some artwork was entered for the “Compassion and Action” competition based in London, and some was chosen for an EARCOS article expected to be published in September. BIBS students took a few steps this year to help people in China and across the world to support people or solve problems throughout a range of engaging Art and Design activities. MYP art students’ videos were sent to join COVID-19 International Student Film Festival run by schools in America. The festival will include some very distinguished judges including individuals from the Washington Post, New York Times, LA Times, BBC, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Disney, NBC, esteemed film critics, and acclaimed movie and theater producers.

Any advice for students with art dreams? (i.e. when preparing for personal work and art directions?)

My advice is to enjoy your learning journey, do not be afraid to make mistakes, be brave and try something new, respect others, their work and their points of view, be compassionate and caring, work hard and aim to succeed because you can. I believe in each student, and strive to give them the confidence they need to succeed. Every child has a talent. Each child is unique, every class is different, and no school is alike. By following my advice, you will fulfil your dreams and succeed in the future. My students have excellent records of achievement in the UK, Russia and China. In the UK I taught in a wide range of schools from Comprehensive schools in Liverpool and Leeds, to Catholic and Grammar schools, and a top International school - Gordonstoun in Scotland.
