“这孩子一直都很优秀！从一年级就来青苗了，我们看着她从那么小的年纪，不知不觉都已经长那么大了！”“比赛拿奖一点都不意外，当年PYP成果展成绩就拿了满分！一直都特别努力的小姑娘！”说起薛希，青苗上东校区的老师们都还记忆犹新，津津乐道。

从上东小学毕业顺利升入顺义中学部的薛希，如今已是亭亭玉立的大姑娘了，依旧活泼开朗爱好广泛，学习之余，喜欢烘培、唱歌、跳舞……和好朋友一起撸猫、看书、聊天、做手工。

“She has always been brilliant! Started with BIBS since G1 and now she is a big girl already!” “I’m not surprised that she won these awards. She scored full mark at the PYP Exhibition. She has been a very hard-working girl!” The BIBS UES teachers could not say enough nice things about our leading role today.

Graduated from BIBS UES Elementary School and now in BIBS Shunyi MS, Xi Xue is a bright girl who loves baking, singing, dancing, reading, crafting, and of course playing with cats with friends.

第一次参加美国学术五项全能（USAP）

First Timer at USAP

对于才上6年级的薛希而言，今年是第一次参加美国学术五项全能（USAP：United States Academic Pentathlon），“之前确实对比赛完全不了解，不知道是一轮一轮的考，还是考一次就可以，也不知道是个人赛还是团队赛。”薛希笑着说，“好在后来学校的带队老师组织我们备赛和演练，Mr. Chris讲课讲的很清晰，还会有各种好玩的学习活动给我们做。备赛过程中我们了解了很多关于比赛的具体规则，也学到了很多学习小技巧，比如看书过程中如何记笔记强化记忆，如何与队友协同备战等。”

This year was the first USAP (United States Academic Pentathlon) for our G6 Xi Xue, who did not quite understand what’s what about the competition. But Xi was not overly worried, “Our teacher Mr. Chris helped us prepare and practice. It was fun. We learnt the competition rules as well as skills and techniques, such as enhancing memorizing by taking notes, and working as a team.”

600多页的全英文备赛资料

600 pages in English

本次USAP大赛围绕“冷战”话题，600多页的全英文《备考指南》（Resource Guide），就算是我们一个成年人看起来，都不免倒吸一口凉气，对于一个六年级的小朋友来说，这英文也太牛了吧！“从小在青苗长大，爸爸妈妈和学校都鼓励我们多读书，没有背过单词语法，书看多了自然就都会了。”小小薛希拈重若轻，“我本来就比较喜欢数学和文学这两科，然后社科应该就是因为比较好记吧，看历史就是像看故事书一样。我每次学习时就会每个学科都看一看，然后一个一个记笔记。”

The topic of this year’s USAP was The Cold War. The 600+ pages of Resource Guide in English was quite a challenge for a G6 student. Her English must be super good. “As I grew up with BIBS, mom and dad always encouraged me to read. Vocabulary and grammar seemed to build up as I read more.” Said Xi, “I like Math, English Literature, and History, and I have kept the habit of writing notes when I study and read.”

全国文学、数学、社会“荣誉组”

虽然说起备赛云淡风轻，但赛场上确实如火如荼、争分夺秒！提及比赛，小薛希现在说起来仍还紧张不已：“比赛前在监考室等的那半小时特别煎熬，笔记攥在手里都快翻烂了，还想再看一遍再看一遍。尤其是文学考作文的时候，我写的有点长，最后几个字几乎是在最后几十秒抢完的，当时间快要结束的时候真的心都快要跳出来了……”好在功夫不负有心人，小薛希最终包揽文学、数学、社会科学全国“荣誉组”（USAP最高级别）一项银奖、两项铜奖！并荣获全国个人总分铜奖和队内最高分奖！

Easy as it may sounded, it was not easy at the Pentathlon. Xi still remembered how intense it was, “The 30 minutes before the competition start was a long waiting. We went through the notes repeatedly. As I wrote a little too long at the writing test, I also finished in the last few seconds, and my heart was beating so fast…” At the end of the day, Xi won a silver medal and 2 bronze medals in the national Honor Division of Literature, Math and Social Science, and a bronze medal of National Individual Total Score. She also won the highest individual total score among the BIBS team!

这么厉害的“牛娃”是“鸡”出来的吗？

Why is Xi so good?

这么厉害的“牛娃”，平时学校作业多吗？课外课补习了吗？父母是如何“鸡娃”的？……大家一定和我一样有这么多的疑问吧！

“没有project时候学校作业最多半个小时就能全写完了，偶尔有project的时候，我总是控制不住自己的好奇和热情，一不小心就做到晚上十点了。”（哈哈，青苗的project作业到底是有多大的吸引力？）

“有课外课，但都是偏兴趣方面的，比如：芭蕾、钢琴、声乐、网球等，除了拉丁语和西班牙语以外就没有学术方面的课外课。”

A super girl, a lot of homework? After school classes? How did the parents raise her?

“I usually finish my homework within half an hour when there is no project. And when there is, I can get so passionate and easily work till 10pm unconsciously.”

“I do have many interest classes after school, such as ballet, piano, music, tennis, and not much besides Spanish and Latin.”

至于是否“鸡娃”，我们特意采访了薛希妈妈

We also interviewed Xi’s mother.

“小学择校时，我们就希望孩子在一个多元文化、以探究为主要方式、老师积极鼓励的环境里学习。在青苗成长的六年中，我们认为老师给了她最好的帮助，她是一个特别爱提问的学生，老师总是非常耐心地回答她的问题。学校丰富多彩的活动也给了她发挥自己才能的机会，参加了学生会、合唱团和舞蹈队。她特别喜欢学校，每天都热切地盼望着上学，我们也为此感到高兴。总之，在学业方面，我们觉得光靠家长单方面“鸡”，很难坚持，效果也很有限，更重要的是能让孩子保持对学习的兴趣，积极主动地去学。”

“We wanted a multi-cultural, inquiry-based learning, loving and supportive environment for Xi. In the last 6 years with BIBS, I think Xi received a lot of help from her teachers. She is a little question machine, and her teachers have been very patient. The diversified activities like student’s union, chorus and dancing team offered her a lot of opportunities to develop her interests and talent. Xi loves her school. Education is never just about parents or school. It’s the interest and passion that drive her to learn every day.”

About the future

当被问及对未来的期待，小薛希笑眯眯的眼睛里像洒满星星，她说：“我才刚6年级，未来应该会有很多可能吧！虽然现在比较感兴趣的专业是语言或者地质学，不过我对未来还没太多具体打算，就顺其自然吧。”而爸爸妈妈对小薛希的期待更加简单：“健康快乐、学业有成。”

我们期待，多元文化、探究学习、支持鼓励能够带给小薛希更广阔的舞台、更多元的发展，我们始终相信，一个满怀好奇、充满热情、积极主动、具备终身学习能力的孩子，无论身处何时何地，都能自扬其帆、昂然向前！

Speaking of the future, Xi smiled like a blossom, “I’m only G6, my future can be anything! For the time being, I’m really into language and geology, but I have not set much plan yet.” As for Xi’s parents, their expectation for her is nothing more than happiness and academic success.

We hope that our multi-cultural environment, inquiry-based learning concept, our love and support, may bring a bigger stage for Xi’s future. We believe a brilliant girl like Xi, full of passion, curiosity, and lifelong learning spirit, will develop towards her own success.
