Dear UISZ Students, Parents, and colleagues, 

亲爱的USIZ 各位学生,家长和同事


With great pleasure and enthusiasm, I am reporting on the Community Summary for the first time in 2022.  When writing these lines our year 4-12 students are debating, negotiating, and discussing issues and challenges of global importance during the 2022 edition of U2NESCO, our school’s very own, and perhaps flagship event, MUN Conference.  Once again, our students are demonstrating stellar debating and diplomatic skills, and act as excellent hosts to their fellow students. 


我非常高兴和热情地在2022年第一次报道社区总结。在写这篇文章的时候,我们4-12年级的学生正在辩论、谈判和讨论2022年U2NESCO会议期间具有全球重要性的问题和挑战,这是我们学校自己的,也是富有代表性的活动,MUN会议。我们的学生又一次展示了出色的辩论和外交技巧,并成为他们的同学的优秀东道主。


There are several events taking place over the coming weeks before the Lunar New Year.  Among them, we are looking forward to holding the UISZ’s new UISZ's Capping ceremony.  At this time, the new Primary building has a roof, and the new Dragon House is one floor shy of being capped.  Due to the current conditions, we regret to not being able to invite the whole community to the celebration.  We had to limit the student’s participation to the Student Council members, and we tried to have a selection of parents from all across the grades. 


在农历新年前的几周,有几件事情正在发生。其中,我们期待着举行UISZ的新UISZ的封顶仪式。此时,新的小学大楼已经建成屋顶,新的龙之家差一层就要封顶了。由于目前的条件,我们很遗憾不能邀请整个社区参加庆祝活动。我们不得不将学生的参与限制在学生会成员之间,并且我们尽量在从所有年级中挑选家长。


We cordially invite the whole community to the Lunar New Year celebration which will take place on Friday, January 28 from 12:30pm.  Performances, Dances, lucky draw, and several booths are expected to take place in the gym.  Please wear RED for the occasion. 


我们诚挚地邀请全体社区成员参加将于1月28日星期五下午12:30举行的农历新年庆祝活动。预计将在体育馆举行表演、舞蹈、抽奖和几个摊位。请穿红色的衣服参与这种场合。

Welcome back to the new term at UISZ! It's been a busy week, this week, with preparations for the MUN conference and the start of the actual event on Thursday - which continues throuth to Saturday. This year we are fortunate to have student delegates from 7 schools attending in person from Guangzhou, Dongguan and Zhuhai (which includes our sister school UISG) as well as one school joining us online from Shenzhen, due to Covid restrictions.

During our current Unit of Inquiry, “Sharing the planet”, Year 3 has learned about natural resources. We learned about why we need natural resources, how we get resources from the Earth, what we use resources for and most importantly, how we balance the need for resources with the responsibility we have to protect nature. To show what they learned, Year 3 students created a model community that is both pleasant and sustainable. 


在我们目前的探究单元—“共享地球”中,三年级的学生学习了自然资源。我们了解了为什么我们需要自然资源,我们如何从地球获得资源,我们使用资源的目的,最重要的是,我们如何平衡对资源的需求和我们保护自然的责任。为了展示他们学到的东西,三年级的学生创建了一个既愉快又可持续的模范社区。

Year 8 Visual Arts students have been learning how to work with air-dry clay to produce cartoon and movie characters!  Air-dry is a friendly art material, it doesn't crack.  It is available in many colors, easy to join small parts, and also doesn't get messy, unlike normal sculpture clay.  Student Anna ( Ji Won), Jung had this to say about the task: "I have done some of the animals or the characters of a certain cartoon. I got my set of colors by mixing basic colors, I tried new colors every time by mixing two or more primary shades until I am satisfied with the color. I also used some sculpture tools, roller, ruler, etc. to make the shape prettier and followed the teacher's instructions. It was fun-loving activity and I enjoyed it a lot in the artroom". 


八年级视觉艺术学生一直在学习如何用风干粘土制作卡通和电影角色!风干材料是一种好用的艺术材料,不会开裂。它有多种颜色可供选择,容易连接小部件,也不会变得凌乱,不像普通的雕塑粘土。关于这个任务,学生Anna这样说:“我已经完成了某部漫画的一些动物或人物。我通过混合基本颜色得到了我的一套颜色,我每次都通过混合两种或更多种原色来尝试新的颜色,直到我对颜色满意为止。我还用了一些雕塑工具,滚筒,尺子等。为了使形状更漂亮,并遵循老师的指示。这是一项有趣的活动,我非常享受在画室里的时光。”

DP Design Technology students have just recently started a new unit on Modelling. The focus for the first part of the unit is on how to conduct conceptual modelling to communicate ideas to the intended audience.  To begin modelling, students needed to conduct an ergonomic analysis of a product. In our class, we focused on something simple such as safety goggles. The student drew and annotated the important components of adjustability, size, comfort and fatigue of the product. Once the students identified components that could've been better, the students applied a technique called SCAMPER. SCAMPER is an abbreviation that stands for: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put into another use, Reverse. It is used to help us generate new ideas from current solutions. The students adapted the initial product by SCAMPER, the design focuses on ergonomic benefits to support comfort and fatigue for the user.

The students on other work have been putting together a new 3-in-1 Snapmaker Machine to help create new products through 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC.

As you can see it's been a busy week, and we are all so proud of our MUN student delegates representing the school in debates about urgent global issues.  We wish everyone a relaxing weekend (though of course many MYP and DP students will be involved in day 3 of MUN which occurs on Saturday).  See you all back on Monday!
