The Primary School

The Junior High School

The Senior High School

So far, Guangzhou Affiliated School of Jinan University for Hong Kong and Macao Students (ASJ) is approaching to the end of its autumn admissions process for the 2022-2023 school year, and the number of applicants increased by more than 30% over last year. In order to welcome the students with good character and excellent academic performance to join, ASJ strengthens the comprehensive assessment of students' abilities in all aspects. The admission rate for the whole school is around 30% and the overall admissions rate for specific grades are lower than 10%.  All students from kindergarten to senior high school have been enrolled, and the expected expansion of classes has been completed. Meanwhile, the relevant preparation of teachers and teaching materials is in full swing.

There has been nearly 5,000 groups of parents who have enquired about the application, and the school has organized nearly 10 admissions tests (online and offline) since ASJ released its enrolment plan in February. To admit the students with good character and excellent academic performance to join our school, we have set up the entrance examinations which are more difficult than last year (the number of questions is increased, the duration of the test is prolonged, and the evaluation tests of students’ behavior performance are added).

The entrance exams have changed significantly compared to last year, and the content and difficulty of the online and offline exams are the same.

The specific changes are as follows:

The Primary School

小学段

The Primary School has a more refined assessment of entry requirements. As the Primary School is the initial stage, the entry requirements for students are examined in two ways:an assessment of the student’s mental state and an assessment of their academic ability, and we also have a meeting with parents. We hope to admit children who meet the school’s criteria and whose parents share our philosophy of schooling.

The criteria for assessing students vary from year to year and will be adapted to suit the characteristics of the grades and children.

For new students entering Grade 1 of the primary school, only interviews are arranged, but these are conducted by both Chinese and foreign teachers. The interview will ask about the student’s personal and general family questions and then gradually transition to questions about daily life, psychological and emotional issues, as well as simple questions about logic, which will be asked in English and Chinese by both Chinese and foreign teachers.

This year, a written Chinese and English test has been added to the entrance examination for Grade 2 to 6 in the primary school. The written part of the test is in line with the textbooks currently used by the school. The PEP version of Chinese textbooks covers vocabulary, sentences, paragraphs and passages. In terms of content, there are reading comprehension of modern texts and ancient texts and poems. Mathematics test is consistent with the Hong Kong Mathematics syllabus in using both Chinese and English test. Students are tested from several aspects, including conceptual understanding, numeracy and comprehensive practice. What’s more, the test also uses Chinese questions, as well as full English questions.

The English test focuses on students’ general skills, including vocabulary, grammar and conversation. Reading comprehension and simple writing will be covered in the higher levels. In addition to the written test, students are also required to go through an interview session with a Chinese teacher and a foreign teacher, focusing on the student’s language skills, parenting etiquette, interests and practical experience, so as to find out if the child is suitable for admission.

According to the examination admissions, the requirements of Chinese test are so comprehensive that students need to be able to demonstrate their solid basic skills. But this year’s entry results show that the highest correct rate of students can reach 90%, and the average correct rate can also be higher than 60% of the total, which is much higher than the Chinese ability of students tested in the same period last year. The mathematics test is in both English and Chinese, which levels up the requirements for mathematics problem solving for primary school students. In particular, as the English mathematics questions are examined from a different perspective to traditional mathematics questions, so students need to be able to have both a knowledge base in mathematics and the ability to think in English.

The majority of students admitted to the school scored above 80 in mathematics, and there were many students who scored almost perfect in mathematics. The written English test focused on basic skills, and in combination with English questions in the interview. Students needed to demonstrate their English skills in all aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It was very pleasing to see that this year’s students were generally very good at English and many of them were able to discuss their views and opinions on things in English with the foreign teachers.

The Junior High School

The Junior High School is a transitional stage. A solid basic knowledge of the subject will provide sufficient driving force for students’ future learning. At the same time, considering that the school is currently enrolling Hong Kong students, a comprehensive test with Hong Kong questions plus Mainland questions are used in this entrance examination.

This year, the Secondary School entrance examinations still focuses on Mathematics and English, with the difference being the addition of an English Mathematics test. In terms of contents, the difficulty of the Grade 7 entrance exam is basically the same as that of last year, but the number of questions has increased and the time period of the test has been extended from that of last year to 50 minutes, while with 47 questions to complete. This is a considerable adjustment for many students from the mainland. Many students gave feedback about the tight time and the large number of questions. The change of this year is to better align with the Hong Kong curriculum and the DSE examinations they will take in the future. The number of offers issued for Grade 7 has decreased compared to that of last year, and the admission requirements are higher and the competition is fiercer in the examinations.

The placement exam for Grade 8 and 9 have become more difficult than that of last year. Firstly, multiple-choice question was cancelled in mathematics exam and it was turned into calculation, geometry and application questions, so as to test students’ basic calculation skills, logical-spatial skills and mathematical thinking, where students need to have a calculation process to get scores. The cancellation of multiple-choice questions has avoided the possibility of students taking their chances in working out the problems in exams. Secondly, the English language test, especially the oral test, is no longer oriented simply towards personal introduction, family and interests, but an interaction with regards to self-evaluation, future plans and reasons for choosing the school, and also implicitly looks at students’ self-management and critical thinking skills, thus examining students’ overall abilities and qualities in more ways.

In addition, this year’s entrance examination further strengthens the control over the admission of students who are biased in different subjects, and strengthens the admission of students with comprehensive abilities in various disciplines. The overall academic standard of students has improved to a greater extent than that of last year.

The Senior High School

The entrance examinations of the Senior High School are further enhanced in terms of its difficulty, with all the grades required to be tested in accordance with the DSE practice tests.

The entrance test for Grade one of senior high school is based on Mathematics and English examinations, combined with an interview for each student to assess their overall ability. The time period for mathematics test is one hour and covers the knowledge of both Mainland and Hong Kong junior schools, including exponents, percentages, polynomials, functions, sets, inequalities, etc., as well as a small number of advanced questions. Besides, multiple-choice questions are turned into long comprehensive questions with mediate difficulty covering more dimensions, and the test design is regularly changed to ensure the equality of the test. The examinations showed that some students with a solid foundation were able to achieve a score of 80 or above. Taking the admission criteria for the May examinations as an example, only 15 students got formal offers, with a maximum score of 95 (out of 100) in Mathematics and an average score of 76. Overall, the difficulty of this year’s Mathematics Entrance Examination of Grade one in senior high school has increased compared to those of previous years (difficulty factor 0.6), and the admission rate has decreased while the average score of admitted students has increased by 20% year-on-year, reflecting the improvement in student quality.

English is a stumbling block for many students in the DSE, as it has a large number of questions with high difficulty, detailed question types and many sub-disciplines, which makes it difficult for many students to adapt to it when they enter Grade one of Senior High School. Specifically, the DSE English test lasts for 6 hours. It tests  the ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing independently, and the listening test even lasts for 2 hours. If students do not have professional training, they are likely to fail to meet the requirements of the test. Therefore, in the admissions test for Grade one of Senior High School, our school lays emphasis on students’ comprehensive ability, especially on English Grammar, reading and writing skills. What’s more, the test imitates the question designs of the DSE test with high difficulty. Students may be stressed if they don’t have a solid foundation in English knowledge.

Taking the May admissions exam as an example, the exam was one hour long and required the completion of grammar, reading and writing questions, so time was very tight. However, students performed well in the case of being unfamiliar with the types of questions. They surpassed the expected score and far surpassed the admission score of last year, indicating the solid knowledge of students and their potentials in English. In the essay, some students even used advanced usage of double clause grammar structures and SAT vocabulary. English oral interview is an additional item of the test, which aims to test students’ ability to express in English. From March to May admissions, there are about 22 students who achieved an IELTS speaking score of 5 or above, which amounts to 55% of the total, demonstrating students’ capability in English fluency, logical thinking and the depth of opinions.

For drop-in students of Grade 2 in Senior High School, Chinese subject is added on the basis of Mathematics and English. Among them, the time period of the English exam was extended to 80 minutes, and the questions amount and difficulty are also increased, so there were few students who met the admission requirements.

According to the Student Affairs Center of ASJ, ASJ will hold enrolment examinations for the 2022-2023 academic year on June 11 and 25.

After July, ASJ will take the vacancy of each grade into account and admit the best by selection.Given the current enthusiasm for applications, students who intend to sign up and those who haven’t decided on the participation date should complete the applications as soon as possible.
