The entrance examinations of the Senior High School are further enhanced in terms of its difficulty, with all the grades required to be tested in accordance with the DSE practice tests.
The entrance test for Grade one of senior high school is based on Mathematics and English examinations, combined with an interview for each student to assess their overall ability. The time period for mathematics test is one hour and covers the knowledge of both Mainland and Hong Kong junior schools, including exponents, percentages, polynomials, functions, sets, inequalities, etc., as well as a small number of advanced questions. Besides, multiple-choice questions are turned into long comprehensive questions with mediate difficulty covering more dimensions, and the test design is regularly changed to ensure the equality of the test. The examinations showed that some students with a solid foundation were able to achieve a score of 80 or above. Taking the admission criteria for the May examinations as an example, only 15 students got formal offers, with a maximum score of 95 (out of 100) in Mathematics and an average score of 76. Overall, the difficulty of this year’s Mathematics Entrance Examination of Grade one in senior high school has increased compared to those of previous years (difficulty factor 0.6), and the admission rate has decreased while the average score of admitted students has increased by 20% year-on-year, reflecting the improvement in student quality.
English is a stumbling block for many students in the DSE, as it has a large number of questions with high difficulty, detailed question types and many sub-disciplines, which makes it difficult for many students to adapt to it when they enter Grade one of Senior High School. Specifically, the DSE English test lasts for 6 hours. It tests the ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing independently, and the listening test even lasts for 2 hours. If students do not have professional training, they are likely to fail to meet the requirements of the test. Therefore, in the admissions test for Grade one of Senior High School, our school lays emphasis on students’ comprehensive ability, especially on English Grammar, reading and writing skills. What’s more, the test imitates the question designs of the DSE test with high difficulty. Students may be stressed if they don’t have a solid foundation in English knowledge.
