Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher, one of the three greatest figures of the ancient period of Western philosophy (the others were Plato and Aristotle). They lived in Athens in the 5th century BCE.  A legendary figure even in his own time, Socrates was admired by his followers for his integrity, his self-mastery, his profound philosophical insight, and his great debating skill.

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani education advocate who became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize after surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban.  She became an advocate for girls' education when she was still a child.  This resulted in the Taliban issuing a death threat against her.  Malala has become a symbol of the kindness, resourcefulness, bravery, and courage of the people of Pakistan. Malala is now a global figure representing equity and hope for us all.

Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor.  Considered one of the 20th Century's greatest humanitarians, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016. A truly magnificient achievement celebrating a life of service.

Nelson Mandela was a Black nationalist and the first Black president of South Africa (1994–1999). His negotiations in the early 1990s with South African Pres. F.W. de Klerk helped end the country’s apartheid system of racial segregation and ushered in a peaceful transition to majority rule.  Mandela and de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1993 for their efforts. Mandela has become a universal figure representing justice and resilience.
