How time flies… in the blink of an eye the Year of the Rabbit is upon us and for many of us, the upcoming holiday season will be the first time in a long time that we have been able to travel and meet up with friends and families. Chinese New Year has always been one of my favourite times of the year, even when I was based in London. This year, being in Guangzhou for this festive period is extra meaningful for me as this was the birthplace of both my maternal grandparents.

As a mother of 5 wonderful (and grown-up) boys, I have always found it rather tricky in balancing the use of the holiday seasons. Whilst I would love to have spent every moment with them, creating beautiful memories, I also had to ensure that home learning was taking place as they approached upcoming GCSE and A level exams - often on their return from the Spring festival. With several weeks of online learning soon to be behind us, it is important for us as parents and guardians to support our children as they prepare to return to in-class teaching.

Below I share some tips with you, and I hope that you might find them useful:

Set the Scene

Find a quiet, well-lit space where your child will be able to focus. Most children will have their study tables in their rooms, but if your child is sharing the room with another family member, it is important to ensure the room remains a quiet and working environment for the duration of the study time.

Dress the Part

Try to avoid staying in pyjamas – it is rather tempting in this weather to remain cozy and comfortable, but it is an important step to dress the part, to ‘wake the body and brain up’ for study time.

Learn How Your Child Works Best

Is your child a morning person? Or might your child find pre-afternoon time a more efficient time to retain learning? It is important to figure out their body clock and adjust their study habits to it.

Be Organised and Plan the Aims of Each Session / Day

At the start of each session / day, try and make a list of what your child should aim to complete. Focus on one thing at a time and once they have completed each task, tick it off their list. This will help them to be more organised so they will know exactly what they have done each day. Remember to praise and award their achievements.

Take Regular Short Breaks

It is recommended that 20-30 minutes of revising should be rewarded with a 5-minute break. 30-60 minutes of revision can be awarded a 10-15 minute break. 2 hours of revision should get at less a 30-minute break. Anymore than 3 hours of revision should receive between a 45-60 minute break. Each child is different and depending on their age, has a different length of focus time. It is important to encourage our children to take breaks to refresh themselves to enable a higher rate of productivity.

Distractions

Encourage your child to steer clear of social media (and their mobile devices) during their allocated study time. It is almost too easy to be pulled away from their studies when a new notification pops up, especially when they are trying to focus on the work in front of them. It is often a battle, but I found that confiscating their devices would sometimes result in an argument hence I would suggest a place where my children would place their devices (outside of their room / away from their study space), and when they had their breaks, they could go and pick it up for an agreed amount of time.

Reading Time

20 minutes seems to be the “magic number” at which students start seeing accelerated gains in reading achievement; it is important to encourage our children to develop the habit of reading daily. As parents, we should also ensure that the books our children are reading are of the right reading age and will stretch their literacy levels. It is also important to ensure that the books are of the genre in which they would enjoy. Reading should be relaxing and enjoyable – not a task nor a punishment.

Get Plenty of Sleep and Do Some Exercise

Children should aim to get at least eight hours of sleep a night. They will be able to think and perform much better after a good night's sleep. Exercise also helps to release tension and oxygenates the brain, helping them keep calm and relaxed.

Social Time

Finally, remember this is holiday time! Do allow your children to have fun and enjoy the upcoming break with family and friends!

Happy Chinese New Year! May this year be full of celebrations and success for you and your loved ones.
