"The ability to learn through self-teaching, is the most important educational skill children can acquire. When students attend university in the UK or US, all of their professors will expect them to have independent learning skills and as adults we need them every day to acquire new knowledge to solve the problems that arise in everyday work or life. At Lucton we believe that students do not acquire these skills naturally or through magic, we believe that students must be taught how to teach themselves, " said Mr Parrish, Lucton Deputy Head of Academic in an article, which explaining independent learning.
“从进入大学生活的第一天起，同学们就会发现，相对于高中学习来说，大学的学习方式会发生很大的变化。一方面，大学新生会拥有非常多的自习时间。在高中阶段的自习时间，会有老师监督并辅导学生，有疑问都可以随时向老师求助，但是进入大学后这些自习时间该如何安排将全部由你自己决定，这就意味着同学们必须要合理且高效的安排利用好自己的“空课时间”。另一方面，同学们在莱克顿都是小班教学，会获得老师们很高的关注度，但是进入大学之后，在一些基础性课程，教授没办法注意到所有的同学，因为他的课堂上可能有超过100位学生。所以从这个角度上来说，同学们还需要学会自习，充分利用大学提供的资源来获得知识。两方面来看，同学们都需要培养自己独立学习的能力，只有掌握了独立学习的技巧，养成自律的习惯才可以在大学学习中崭露头角。”

Lucton University Guidance Office also pointed out, when students start their university life, they will experience a totally different life from their high school days. On one hand, there will be a large amount of “Self-study” time. It’s totally different from high school where teachers are always ready to help you. Students are required to organize and motivate themselves to use this “free time” wisely and effectively. On the other hand, students are in small classes in Lucton, and they will receive high attention from the teachers. However, there will be less personal attention from university lecturers and professors, because there will be more than one hundred students in some fundamental classes. Students need to be prepared for self-study and learn to work with classmates in group work as well as make good use of all resources available on their own. From these two perspectives, students should equip themselves with independent learning skills. Only by mastering independent learning skills with self-discipline could a student achieve success during the university life.
