It is not easy to learn a language, including vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening all need to be mastered. In Lucton, which has created an English-only environment, many non-native English students have a good command of English, and are able to communicate and learn subjects through English. However, Luctonians are still working hard to improve their English language skills and lay an excellent language foundation for future study around the world.

Fiction Express is an innovative online book platform that connects students with professional authors, encouraging reading for pleasure through fun co-creation of stories. There is a large array of books on the platform that are graded at varying levels which enable students of differing ability levels to engage successfully with the material. Fiction Express has been designed to improve poor reading habits by exciting students about reading and turning them into eager readers through the power of engagement.

在上海莱克顿，我们相信阅读能够起到一个核心的作用，帮助学生学习，帮助他们进行课前的准备。大量研究表明，经常阅读英文可以提高阅读、写作甚至是口语能力！在教育的各个阶段，有规律的阅读可以帮助学生奠定基础，方便他们在英文材料中成功获取信息，也有助于帮助学生成为具有高英文水平的真正的全球公民。

我们以Fiction Express为中心的阅读计划取得了巨大的成功。在2019-2020学年，上海莱克顿学校的学生平均每人阅读了25本书，由此，学生们的英语语言能力有了显著的提升。通过我们英语语言测试提供的数据可以看出，我们学生英语阅读水平提高的速度远超我们的预期，几乎是普通英语学习者的两倍。在上海莱克顿学校，超过90％的学生在9个月内将他们的阅读能力提高了至少一个CEFR（欧洲共同语言参考标准）等级。这是一项了不起的成就，我们也坚信学生们将在未来一直保持这样的成绩。本学期，我们的阅读计划也已经取得了一些显著的成就，十年级的Stacia Y已经读完了近11本书，而本学期才刚刚进行到第五周，如此看来，这是非常了不起的成就，这也体现了大部分莱克顿学生已经全身心地投入到阅读计划中了。

At Lucton Shanghai, we believe that reading plays a central part in a student’s education and in preparing them for life after school. Reading regularly in English has been shown in numerous research studies to improve reading, writing and even speaking ability! Regular reading will underpin successful access to English material throughout all stages of education and will assist in helping students become true global citizens with high levels of English proficiency. 

We have had great success with our Fiction Express centred reading programme. On average, students at Lucton Shanghai read 25 books each over the 2019-2020 academic year. This resulted in some remarkable improvements with regards to the student’s English language skills. Using data provided by our English language testing provider, we were able to determine that reading proficiency levels increased twice as quickly as expected in comparison to other English as an Additional Language learners from similar contexts. Over 90% of students at Lucton Shanghai managed to improve their reading proficiency by at least one level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale over a nine-month period.  This is an amazing achievement and I am sure that this level of attainment will continue in the future. Already this year we have seen some notable achievements with our reading programme. Stacia Y from year 10 has completed almost 11 books! This is remarkable considering that we are only in week five of the new academic year. This demonstrates the level of dedication that is prevalent amongst students at Lucton Shanghai.

我们的英语支持计划不仅仅包括阅读。在上海莱克顿，我们认为英语支持应该根据学生的需要量身定制，“一刀切”的做法并不明智。曹老师是我们的专业英语语言支持老师，她开设了许多精彩的专业支持课程，帮助学生快速提高英语水平，该课程是围绕剑桥“First for Schools”教材设计的，教学目标是让学生在课程结束时英语能达到B2（CEFR标准）水平，以确保他们能够在英语环境中独立学习，并在他们的学科学习上有所助益。目前，课程已经有了一个良好的开端，学生们踊跃参加课程，让曹老师非常欣慰。特别值得一提的是十年级的Felix S同学，至目前为止，他一直真诚、热情的参与英语支持课，并非常希望自己的英语水平能有所提高。

However, our English support programme consists of a lot more than just reading. At Lucton Shanghai, we believe that English support should be tailored to meet the needs of the student and that a ‘one size fits all’ approach is not wise. Ms Cao - who is our specialist English language support teacher runs a variety of fantastic specialist classes with the aim of improving English proficiency at a fast rate. The courses are designed around the Cambridge ‘First for Schools’ qualification with all students aiming to achieve a B2 level of English by the end of the programme. A B2 level of English (from the CEFR scale) is where students need to be if they are able to effectively learn in an English environment independently. We need to ensure that students are at this level as quickly as possible as this will have a positive impact on attainment across all academic disciplines. The groups have made a good start and Ms Cao has been impressed by the willingness of the students to participate in classes. A special mention needs to made to Felix S from year 10, who has so far approached English support classes with a real enthusiasm and has demonstrated an eagerness to improve.
