Firstly, we believe that learning is a social process that requires students to interact with one another and the teacher as well as the subject material. Our talented British teachers design lessons that require students to work actively through ideas and concepts, addressing a series of questions or problems to develop a secure understanding: they are encouraged to think for themselves and collaboratively. It is a long way from my schooling, where teachers would stand at the front, lecturing and occasionally dictating.

When I was at school, it was my job to record accurately the information and reproduce it in examinations. In the 21st century, where the internet and artificial intelligence ensure swift access to information, the emphasis at LEHF is on analysis, creative and critical thinking rather than solely on knowledge.

Our classrooms, laboratories and specialist Art, Drama, Music and Technology spaces have all been designed to allow students to collaborate and to develop confidence. Secondly we place an emphasis on meta-learning – teaching students how to learn – to ensure that they can adapt to new subjects, ideas or concepts in the future. After all the students of today are highly likely to be working in industries using technology that has not yet been invented. If I look back to my school days, there were no personal computers, laptops or tablets, no smart phones and certainly no internet – from all of these inventions we have witnessed the birth of the most valuable industries of the 21st century.

Thirdly, we believe that the formal examined education is only a small part of the preparation a student needs for a happy and successful life beyond school. We want our students to be successful academically, but, in our experience, students who have developed real balance through a range of passions and interests beyond the classroom are more successful at studying.

Our students have 2 hours after lessons each day in which they can explore and experience a range of activities beyond their normal subjects. For some students this will enable them to spend more time practising and performing in the creative arts – art, drama and music – or play more sport. For others it will be honing their debating and public speaking skills, their interests in the environment, global affairs or come to that anything in which they have a real interest. Through our activities programme, students learn a range of soft-skills – teamwork and leadership, planning and event management – and they develop friendships that will last a lifetime.

We believe that everyone has a responsibility to be a positive member of society and through PHSE lessons, through House activities, competitions and partnerships with charities and other organisations students will develop a moral compass, compassion and a sense of their place in society.

Finally LEH is a boarding school with high-quality residential facilities. Too often students spend hours each day stuck in traffic getting to and from school. Boarding at LEH enables students to spend this time in the pursuit of their own interests and hobbies. They have support from their teachers and from the residential pastoral staff throughout the day. During evening school, a different member of academic staff will be available to help students with their home learning each evening.

High quality communication with parents will ensure they have a full knowledge of their child’s education, but will change the conversation at home from nagging about completing homework to a joyful discussion about what is being learnt, or the activities a student has enjoyed.
