Ms Rebecca Ngakane joins LEH Foshan as Head of English. Previously, Ms Ngakane worked in London as the English Curriculum and KS4 Lead as well as the Head of House. She has also taught in Tanzania, New York and in the UK. She has a first-class English degree from Queen Mary, University of London.

What do you love about your job?

Every day, I get the chance to work with students who are curious, entertaining, hard-working, and determined to be successful. Every day is different, and every day ends with a sense that students appreciate what they are learning and when they are at their best. That kind of instant in role satisfaction is what I love about my profession.  

每一天我都有机会与学生们一起互动，这总让我感到心情愉悦。他们充满着好奇心，对待学习刻苦认真，在追求成功的路上孜孜不倦。每一天都是新的一天。每天工作结束的时候，我都能感受到学生们对学习的喜爱和知道每个学生的最佳水平状态。这种即时的工作满足感就是我喜爱教书的原因。 

What makes LEH’s English lesson different?

您觉得，LEH的英语课堂具有什么样的魅力跟与众不同的特色？

We write less. It is possibly our most controversial (and yet fundamental) difference: we are not looking for, or impressed by, quantity. Sometimes an entire lesson is dedicated to achieving a single sentence that demonstrates complex thoughts, a skillful structure and impressive vocabulary. When students are truly confident with what it means to sound like (and think like) an academic in English, they are then able to focus on producing longer answers but we do not rush this process at LEH. This helps to avoid repeating mistakes and allows for much more targeted marking by both students and teachers. 

我们的课堂不会要求学生长篇大论地作文。我们不一味追求数量，也不为沉冗的练习所打动。这可能我们是最有争议性但也是最根本的特色。有时候，我们的一整节课都是用来构建一个能够展现深刻思维、熟练结构和出色词汇的句子。当学生们能真正用学者的方式思考问题和表达意见，他们就能够更专注地写出更长的文章。但在LEH，我们并不心急地要加快这个学习过程，这样只是揠苗助长。我们的方法更有助于避免反复犯同样的错误，让老师和学生更有针对性地教学和学习。 

How to make students fall in love with reading and cultivate it as a life-long habit?

在让孩子爱上阅读方面，您有什么心得？

Students need to be allowed to explore many different texts and topics, in order to find something that truly engages their imagination. This may be a best-selling fiction novel or a little-known biography about an inventor or sportsperson or mathematician; regardless of the topic or genre, students will not fall in love with reading if they are only asked to read for academic purposes, so it is the job of all adults to ensure that we are encouraging curiosity and providing access to as wide a range of reading resources as possible.

我们应该允许和鼓励学生们自由探索不同的文体和主题类型，这样有助于真正地激发他们想象力。这有可能是一本畅销的小说，或者是鲜为人知的发明家、运动员或数学家的传记。无论是什么主题或文体类型，如果只是为了达到学术目的而去阅读，那么他们将不会爱上阅读。因此，作为成年人，我们都有责任去激发学生们对阅读的好奇心，并提供尽可能丰富的阅读资源。

At LEH Foshan, we have begun our library by purchasing 3,000 brand new texts. Each year, after consultation with the students, we will grow our library until the heart of our school is a place that everyone has invested in.

Ms Rebecca Ngakane joins LEH Foshan as Head of English. Previously, Ms Ngakane worked in London as the English Curriculum and KS4 Lead as well as the Head of House. She has also taught in Tanzania, New York and in the UK. She has a first-class English degree from Queen Mary, University of London.

"My goal in life is to make every child fall in love with reading. I have regularly organised theatre trips and believe in broadening students' appreciation of English culture. I have also helped to lead Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and Cambridge University outreach programmes for sixth form students. I can’t wait to meet some of my future students!"
