Pathway to University

Mr Steve Allen

Founding Head Master

At LEH, we believe in encouraging student ambition and then helping students to set realistic targets to achieve their dreams. Throughout the School, students will participate in a structured programme of careers and higher education advice.

Our aim is to enable students to gain access to the very best university for the course of their choice. We will challenge them to think widely and to understand what they study at university will unlikely be related to their career once they have graduated.

The support we provide covers 4 BIG questions that we believe help a student to decide their future pathway to the university of their choice.

At each stage of the process, we use a mixture of the expertise we have in School, combined with support from LEH in London, from the universities themselves, and also some very helpful online software.

Strengths & Direction

To understand the starting point, it is best to consider your child’s strengths and interests. What are they good at and what do they really enjoy? They might not be the same.

At LEH, we have robust conversations with students about what they enjoy and what they do well. We encourage them to be honest and to think widely. We use 2 software packages that help them to gain a better understanding of themselves and to suggest careers that might interest them.

For parents, try to put yourself in your children’s shoes and to answer these questions the way they would – and not the way you, or their grandparents, might wish them to answer. If you are finding this difficult, then you will understand how hard students find it and begin to think about the conversation that you need to have with them.

For me, my passion at School was History but I was aware that Mathematics and Physics were my strengths and were the areas I should study in more detail. And it was a safe choice because with these subjects I would always be employable. When I was a teenager, in the UK, unemployment was very high. However, I still kept my interest in history and it has helped to shape my future life. Perhaps that is why I have ended up travelling so widely and working overseas for so much of my adult life. So, it's important that we balance what we're really good at and will influence our career future, while keeping our passions and interests alive.

Future Thinking

未来观

When I left University there were no mobile phones, personal computers were still very limited and the world wide web was still a dream; Alibaba, TaoBao, MeiTuan and WeChat did not exist. Today‘s major employers around the world were only small companies if they existed at all.

The world will change a lot in the future. When our current 10- and 11-year-old students graduate in 2033, the World will be very different and so we need to think carefully about the careers that the students of today will follow.

Career and Subject Choices

In reality, most careers do not need a specific qualification – Doctors, Engineers, Architects do need specific training – but most careers do not. Your children will have many careers and they need to be flexible and adaptable, intellectually, in terms of their work ethic and practice, and in terms of how and where they work.

So how do we move from ideas about careers to what to choose to study at School and at University? This is where the individual support of the student’s pastoral tutor at LEH is really important. They get to know your child (and hopefully you) very well and help to provide the insight required for good decisions to be made. They will certainly challenge you and your child’s decisions to ensure they are robust, well-considered and provide as much future choice as possible.

A Level is universally recognised!

A Level

While we are talking about subjects and university choices and destinations, I would like to talk about some myths.

A Level qualifications are considered to be the Gold Standard university entrance in English speaking countries, UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore & Canada, and are certainly accepted by all major universities in Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, The Netherlands and even in France, Germany and Italy…

These are just a few of the universities that I have personally helped students attend over the last 5 to 10 years.

Making an Application

The courses offered and the application systems for each country could be very different. However, the application process for all locations requires the student to make an application and the School to provide a supporting statement, including evidence of

  • academic achievement

  • academic reach, interest beyond the taught curriculum and evidence of enrichments of Extra Curriculum Activities

  • character development and resilience

  • personal drive, a strong evidence-based reason for studying that particular course and it has to come from the student’s heart

Support at LEH

Throughout each student’s time at LEH we provide a range of support to students and their families to ensure they are ready for the move to Higher Education (University).

  1. We provide support tailored to the individual and the year group, with options for meetings with parents at key points.

  2. The personal pastoral tutor for each will help each student navigate their way through the choices to be made.

  3. Specialist careers and higher education advice is provided through PHSE lessons.

  4. Within these lessons and in their spare time, students may use the online self-assessment and analysis tools to inform their choices.

Our goal is for the students to be making the right choice of course and best choice of university for the course.
