Money Savvy:

Preparing Children for the Real World

The IB has always emphasized the importance of learning within a global context so that students can see the connection between what they are learning and the real world. One of these contexts is called 'How We Organize Ourselves' in the PYP and in the MYP, it is known as 'Fairness and development.' To prepare TWIS students for the real world, they inquire into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

From all grade levels, students are exposed to various real-life experiences. Let's take a look at how TWIS constructs knowledge and understanding of 'money', 'economics' and 'finance'.

From Economics, Profit, Commodity to Sale

Enlightenment

In Unit 2, Grade 5 students learned about economies, their interconnections, and dependence on the ability to produce goods and supply services. Earlier this semester, they had a unique opportunity to learn about the law of supply and demand from our guest speaker, Mr. Karl general manager from ZED Candy. Mr. Karl’s speech motivated our students to have their own business and make a profit.

Practice

Our students divided into small groups based on their interests, made a goal and a business plan. Then, they practiced previously learned knowledge of income, expenses, startup money, advertisement, and profit. Finally, they made such creative advertisements for their businesses and advertised the big sale around the school.

Students worked very hard, made their products with great help from their parents, set up their tables, and started selling. In just a few hours, they sold all of their products. It was time for students to calculate their income, subtracting expenses from profits. They have bought over 80 books for their classroom library using the income. As Ms. Alexsandra said, it was a very successful event that provided students with a memorable opportunity and enabled them to put learning into practice.

Street Market: Reconstruction of

Numbers, Models and Concepts

The Practice of Mathematical Models

In unit two of mathematics, G8 students learned about how to manipulate numbers and letters to obtain models in daily life. The summative task challenges TWIS students to organize a street market applying mathematical concepts to earn a profit.

During the preparation, students produced a list of food to sell and created some publicity materials. They went to each classroom to encourage the community to participate in the street market.

Inquiry into the Real World

Unfortunately, on the day the street market was planned, restrictions on large gatherings were tightened as a preventive health measure. Students immediately overcame their disappointment and showed flexibility and resilience in adapting to the unexpected turn of events.

On the day they could finally hold their sale, students made use of available ingredients to come up with new dishes and resorted to pre-orders to avoid overcrowding. We were very proud of how the Grade 8 students adapted to the changes!

It is good practice for our students to learn using mathematics in the financial field. They need to control their costs and obtain the best interest. The street market task deepened their understanding that mathematics is also practical and useful in daily life. As for their profit, they are leaning towards donating to a worthy cause in Dongguan.

Field Trip to Bank

While in the University and Career Counseling Program, we are looking into visiting financial institutions for our students to gain more insights and hands-on experience similar to their visit to the HSBC office in Dongguan. We'll be delighted to hear from businesses that are willing to open their doors to our students.

In traditional education, concepts such as 'mathematics', 'economics', and 'money' may be tedious and obscure to students, but these concepts are so relevant to our daily lives that they are never part of the abstraction and opposition.

How can we tear down the walls of dryness and prejudice of concepts to renew and expand students' knowledge, interest and curiosity? Bodo Schaefer, a German author, wrote a children's book called A Dog Named Money that has become popular worldwide, with readers calling it a fairy tale of enlightening financial stories and child psychologists calling it a belated creation. The reason is that the author has created a fast track to understanding 'Money' and 'Finance' in the book, teaching readers how to properly deal with numbers and money in a light-hearted and fun way. The pedagogy of TWIS and IB curriculum is also similar to this book. Our teachers break down the seemingly complex concepts of mathematics, economics, finance, and models one by one, and further instruct students on how to be confident and resolute applying them in a practical way in their daily lives, allowing them to expand their horizons, inquire in-depth information and enhance their ability to learn, in which knowledge empowers students with more possibilities.
