为了打破“健康食品即沙拉”的偏见,10年级学生制作了一本书

IB课程体系中,每一位中学生在MYP中学项目的最后一年,都需要完成一项至关重要的学业任务——个人设计项目。自定主题、形式不限,这项以学生为主导的项目,强调着“个人”,它赋予了学生独特的机会去深度探究个人兴趣、思索学业或职业生涯、展开调查研究、实践所学、发现问题、解决问题、反思自我,从而延伸学术的深度和广度。


In the final year of the MYP programme, every IB student is required to complete a significant academic assignment - the Personal Project. Self-designed and open-ended, this student-driven project emphasizes 'personal', which provides students with a unique opportunity to explore and inquire on their personal interests, evaluate their academic life or future career choices, conduct research, practice, identify and solve problems, and reflect on themselves, thus extending the depth and breadth of their academic endeavors.


十年级的Lily,三年前从一所传统学校的国际部转学至东华文泽学校(TWIS),成为TWIS创校学生团队的其中一员。将自我浸染于多元化知识的海洋,提升自我驱动力和自我组织能力,是她当初来TWIS的目标之一。在MYP个人设计项目中,她烹饪、拍摄、写作、设计、排版、打样、出品纸质书、线上授课,这长达一个学年的项目不仅帮助了她实现了当初的目标,还以亲身实践来打破“健康食物即沙拉”的偏见,把享受美食的乐趣传递给更多的人。一起来看看她所亲历的项目故事。


Lily joined TWIS three years ago as one of its first students after transferring from a traditional school. Immersing herself in the ocean of diverse knowledge and enhancing her organizational skills was one of her goals when she first came to TWIS. In the MYP personal project, she cooked, photographed, designed, typeset, wrote, produced a paper book, and taught online. This year-long project not only helped her achieve her original goals, but also helped her break the misconception of "healthy food is salad" by her practices, spreading the pleasure of enjoying food to more people. Let's take a look at the story of Lily's personal project.

健康是人类共同关心的话题,也是大家不懈追求的目标。在人的一生中,影响健康的因素不胜枚举,而饮食始终是贯穿一生且可被掌控的重要因素。随着生活条件和环境的改变,人们迫切地希望吃得更好、更健康,从无脂肪食品到以健康脂肪为基础的生酮饮食,从“盐糖油”成分过度的“三高食品”到仅含蔬菜水果的“轻食沙拉”,人们对食物结构的观念不断发生变化。


这引向了一个重要的问题:那些在消费市场上被热烈追捧的饮食概念是正确并适用于所有人的吗?健康食品仅是沙拉吗?Lily却不这么认为,她说:“很多人觉得健康食物就是全部绿色的食品,比如青菜、水果等。但是对于我们青少年阶段的人来说,只吃蔬菜沙拉是不够营养的。健康食品不应仅仅是蔬菜沙拉,还可以是日常所食用的多元化美食。我们只需要重新搭配各种食物、配料、调料,改变其口味,它也成为一道提供能量、美味且健康的食物。”



让身边人爱上健康食物,并改变关于健康食物就仅仅是蔬菜沙拉的观念,是Lily确定MYP个人设计项目主题的初衷。喜爱美食的当下,Lily也热爱着艺术,在思索如何将美食和艺术相结合时,她想到了制作一本书,一本为读者提供多元健康食物选择的、涵盖美食制作教程的书。


我的学习目标是学习如何烹调易于准备的快手健康食品;产品是制作一本食谱书。以书的方式,教导人们如何制作美食,并在食物制作的过程中让人们了解更多食物的知识,从而让他们对健康食品产生兴趣。健康食品不应仅仅局限于水煮鸡胸肉、蔬菜沙拉。健康食品也可以是我们感兴趣的和喜欢的食物。在共同烹饪过程中,人们还可以给他们的朋友和家人带来烹饪食物的乐趣和满足感


在这一项目中,Lily致力于让大家抛弃根深蒂固的”健康食物即蔬菜沙拉”的理念,她希望运用营养学的知识去传达一些全新的见解,创新的菜式,给读者带来更多的灵感和体验。

Lily's Book


饮食既是人类最基本的活动,又有着丰富的文化意义。它不仅满足我们止饥果腹的身体需要,而且承载着一些与我们密切相关的观念,譬如自我、集体记忆、社会关系等。正如哈佛大学人类学教授华琛(James L. Watson)所指出的,“食物如镜”,食物几乎可以观照社会、文化特征及其变迁的所有方面。因此,在此项目中,Lily所选择的全球语境框架是与文化意义有关的“身份认同与关系”,她认为,“我的项目是像让大家感受到制作美食的快乐,激发他们对美食和健康食物的兴趣。‘关系’的框架对于我的帮助很大,它可以引导我们将美味的健康分享给我们身边的人,还可以邀请朋友和家人一起制作这样的美食。这样不仅可以提升人与人之间的关系,还能够在共同烹饪的过程中感受到美食制作的快乐”。

Being healthy is a common concern of and a goal that we all pursue relentlessly. There are countless factors that affect one's health, and the food we eat is a significant factor that can be controlled. With the change in living conditions, everyone is eager to eat better and healthier, from foods heavy in salt, fat and sugar to light dishes such as salad.


Food structure is changing, which leads to an important question - Is the insight of food that is so highly sought after in the consumer market correct and applicable to everyone? Is healthy food equal to salad? Lily didn't think so. She said, "Many people think that healthy food or green foods are just vegetables and fruits. But for teenagers, vegetable salad is not enough. From a nutritional point of view, healthy food is not just limited to boiled chicken breast and vegetable salad. It can be a variety of cuisines that are consumed daily. We just need to remix various foods, ingredients, dressings, change its taste, and it will become delicious healthy food providing energy for us to continue growing.



Lily's personal project learning goal was to get people around her to fall in love with healthy food and to change the misconception that healthy food is just plain and simple vegetable salad. While she loves food, Lily also loves arts. When she was thinking about how to combine food and arts, Lily came up with the idea of creating a recipe book, a book that provides readers with a variety of healthy food choices and covers cooking tutorials.


"My learning goal is to learn how to cook healthy foods that are easy and fast to prepare; the product is to create a cookbook. In this book, I will teach readers how to prepare the recipe,  and get readers interested in cooking by demonstrating the whole cooking process. They can also understand that healthy food is not just limited to boiled chicken breast and vegetable salad. Healthy food can also be the food which we are interested in. They can give their friends and family a sense of satisfaction from making their own food."


In this project, Lily aimed to move away from the entrenched notion of 'healthy food as vegetable salad' and used the nutritional knowledge to convey new insights and innovative dishes to inspire her readers.

Lily's Self-produced Book


Having food is both the most basic activity for us and rich in cultural meaning. It not only satisfies our biological needs to feed ourselves, but also carries the ideas that are closely related to us, such as the Self, Collective Memory, and Social Relationship. As James L. Watson, professor of anthropology at Harvard University, has pointed out in  'Food as a Lens', that food can reveal almost all aspects of social and cultural identity and change. Therefore, in this project, the global context that fits Lily is Identity and Relationship because her project was to inspire people to be happy with cooking healthy food. She said, "The 'relationship' framework has helped me a lot in guiding me to share delicious and healthy food with people around me, and to invite friends and family to prepare the meal together. This not only enhances the relationship between people but also allows us to feel the joy of being together while cooking together".

Lily的计划是通过调查研究、制作食谱、在线烹饪教学等方式,让人们了解健康食物并不局限于索然无味的蔬菜沙拉。35页的书籍,从前期的调研到设计完成并印刷出品,历时7个月,Lily说:“几乎每天都在专注这件事,包括周末。”项目进行的过程充满着挑战性,Lily需要同时学会烹饪、拍摄、设计、排版、写作、在线授课等。得益于条理清晰的时间安排,她最后顺利地完成了所有的计划,以下是她的项目过程。



特别的是,在Lily的个人设计项目中,她安排了烹饪授课的环节,以亲身实践来分享健康食物制作的全过程。原本打算在学校厨艺教室授课的她,受到疫情的影响,在与导师Mr. PJ的讨论后,她决定将烹饪课程转为的线上直播。参与了Lily课程的其中一位TWIS学生说道:“通过参加Lily的课程,我学会了牛油果面包、水果茶和香蕉煎饼这三种健康食品的做法。Lily的网上教学活动准备得非常充分,她的PPT还展示了健康食品和垃圾食品的区别,以及完整的准备过程,这是一个非常有趣的活动。”

Lily's plan is to conduct research, create recipes, and facilitate an online cooking tutorial to tell the TWIS community that healthy food isn't limited to tasteless vegetable salads. The 35-page book took her seven months to complete, from preliminary research to designing and printing. Lily said, "I have tried my best and focused on it almost every day, including weekends." The project was challenging, as Lily had to learn how to cook, photograph, design, typeset, copywrite, and teach cooking in a limited time. Thanks to a well-organized schedule, she ended up successfully completing all the plans. This is the process of her project.



What's special in Lily's personal project? She arranged a cooking class to share the entire process of cooking healthy food. Although she originally planned a face-to-face cooking class, Lily had to show grit and resilience by doing an online cooking demo as a result of the lockdown in Dongguan.  One of the TWIS students who virtually attended Lily's class said, "I learned three healthy food preparation: avocado bread, fruit tea and banana pancakes. Lily's online teaching activities are very well prepared, the PowerPoint explains the process well. It is a very interesting online activity!"

“我觉得我的个人设计项目一直处于跌宕起伏的状态,主要是第一次做项目,难度很高,也担心自己做得不好,有比较大的压力。”对于一位10年级学生而言,独立完成一本书的制作并让书籍得以出品,绝非易事。然而,Lily认为,在IB课程中所领会的ATL学习方法发挥着至关重要的作用,帮助着她解决大部分困难和挑战。在与Lily的对话中,她自述了这些至关重要的ATL学习技能。


// 思考能力 //


“我常常思考如何让我的书编排得更抓眼球、更有趣。从封面设计到内容撰写,我都尽力去做一个优秀的IB“思考者”。由于性格使然,我喜欢在安静的地方思考和反思。在一个足以让我平静的空间里,我可以分析出问题的关键点并找到解决方案。关于思考能力,我还想提及一个例子。当我准备开始教授烹饪健康食物的课堂任务时,不幸遇上疫情。经过深思熟虑后,我很快地找到解决办法——用线上授课代替现场教学。这个可行的方案也得到了参与者的认可。”

// 沟通能力 //


ATL学习技能中的沟通能力让我可以顺畅地与我的导师和朋友进行讨论和交流,从而征求他们对于我的个人设计项目的意见。例如,我常向他们询问他们最喜欢的美食,以此得到中肯的建议。当我在项目过程中犹豫不决,或遇到如烹饪方法、排版设计、在线授课等困难时,我都会与我的导师讨论从而寻求最佳解决方案。沟通能力在我的个人设计项目中确实发挥了非常重要的作用。”

// 研究能力 //


“在个人设计项目的开启阶段,我就知道第一步应当是调查研究,查找我需要分享什么样的菜式,如何烹饪这些美食,并研究如何勾勒出符合我最初想象的书的原型。研究能力让我能够有效地搜索这些信息,同时也拓宽了我的视野。

"I think my personal project has been in a state of ups and downs, mostly because it was my first time working on a personal project that was challenging. I felt the pressure", said Lily. For a 10th grader, working independently on a book and getting it produced was expectedly challenging. However, Lily acknowledged that the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills that she learned in the IB curriculum played a crucial role in helping her overcome most of the difficulties and challenges. In our conversation with Lily, she shared the ATL skills that were crucial in the success of her project.



// Thinking Skill //


"I have been always thinking about how to make my book more eye-catching and interesting. From cover design to content writing, I tried my best to be a good 'thinker' which is one of the IB learner profile attributes. Because of my personality, I like to think and reflect on myself in a quiet place where I can analyze the key points of a problem and find a solution. There is one more example I would like to mention and highlight. When I was about to start my task of teaching cooking dishes to the TWIS community, the epidemic was unfortunately upon us. Applying my thinking skills, I quickly found a solution - to teach online instead of onsite. This workable solution was also applauded by the participants."

// Communication Skill //


"Appropriate communication skills enabled me to discuss and consult with my supervisor and friends. For example, I would ask them about their favorite food or dish, and they would give me some suggestions. When I was indecisive about the process or encountered some problems like the cooking approaches, the design patterns and online tutorials, I would discuss these with my supervisor and figure out how to proceed. Communication skills played a very important role in my personal project indeed."

// Research Skill //


"At the beginning of my personal design project, I knew that the first step is to conduct research. Using my research skill, I understood what kind of dishes I was supposed to share and cook. I also conducted research on how to sketch a prototype of the book that fit my initial idea. Having good research skills allowed me to search for information effectively, while also broadening my horizon."
