亲爱的家长

I hope you have had a good week; our students are busy with exams or revision so I hope that you will find time to talk to your children about what they need to do to prepare for exams but also that you are able to find time to enjoy each other’s company.

希望您度过了愉快的一周，本周我们的学生忙于备考复习，希望家长们能在周末抽出时间跟孩子们讨论复习计划，也希望你们能抽空陪伴彼此。

Many of my weekends are spent at education conferences or recruitment fairs where we promote the school. On Saturday, I was asked to speak about how we support Chinese culture in international schools. This made me think about the many years of teaching in London, England. One year, I taught a class of students who among them spoke seven different languages. Back then there was no such thing as ELL teachers or teaching assistants. Teachers were just expected to cope and so were the children. Thankfully, things have moved on now and we are very knowledgeable about language acquisition and how best to support it. 

最近，我的周末几乎都在教育研讨会及招聘会中度过。上周六，我被邀请在一个教育研讨会上分享我校是如何在国际化教育中融入中国文化的。这让我回想起多年前在英国伦敦教书时的情景。曾经我教导过一个班级，学生们加起来能说七种不同的语言，但在那个时候，英语教学支持老师或助教这样的专业人员和理念还未曾普及，只能靠老师和孩子们自己去适应教学。值得庆幸的是，多年以后情况已经发生了巨大变化。作为老师，我们对外语学习的过程有了更深入和科学的了解，知道如何能最好地帮助孩子们进行外语学习。

Equally little time or effort was given to promoting or supporting cultural heritage. Here now in China, all cultures are celebrated through the curriculum and our ECA programme. LEH London and I both see it as a privilege to have a school in Foshan and to be able to blend our British curriculum with other cultures in a mutually respectful manner to all races within the school. Our desire is to create globally minded students appreciate. Very soon we will be celebrating Queen Elizabeth reign and remembering Dragon Boat. I think you will agree that we, as a school community should be very proud of how we seek to embrace each other’s differences as well as similarities.

同样，以前鲜少有学校愿意花费时间和精力对学生进行传统文化的传承教育。但如今，我们已经习惯于将传统文化教育融入日常课堂，并通过丰富的课外活动让学生体验和感受文化的传承。我们的姐妹学校英国霍利斯和我都认为，在佛山办学是一份莫大的荣幸。我们能够以相互尊重的方式将英国课程与中国传统文化进行融合。我们希望培养学生们的全球意识，希望他们能够尊重并欣赏不同国家与民族的传统和文化。很快我们将迎来女王伊丽莎白二世登基纪念日以及中国传统节日端午节，作为一个学校社区，我们应该为能尊重、包容以及接受彼此的文化差异而感到自豪。

I was also asked to reflect on the pressures of staff recruitment. Those of us who have been in teaching for many years will know that staff recruitment and retention of teachers is not a new problem. In England, many times in my career, recruitment has been at a crisis point. The difficulties we face today, I reminded my colleagues, are something that we have seen before and will see again. In fact, many teachers come to work internationally because they feel the work-life balance in their home country is not acceptable. Working here at LEH, our teachers are looked after by the school, they have great opportunities for travel and adventure and the students and the parents respect and appreciate their handwork. Staff retention at LEH is much higher than at other schools around the world because of this. Most importantly, teachers at LEH are given the time, resources and respect to focus on outstanding teaching practice; they too are happy, busy and purposeful.

另一个我被问到的问题是，如何应对员工招聘的压力。从教多年的人都知道，教师的招聘和留任一直是学校运营中的重要问题。我在英国任教期间，所在学校的教师招聘问题也曾出现数次危机。所以我一直提醒同事们，类似的问题不是第一次出现，也不会是最后一次出现。事实上，许多教师选择到海外工作，是因为他们觉得在自己国家没有办法做到工作与生活平衡。很多老师之前生活的国家生活成本较高，这就意味着他们没有太多的财务自由或时间来享受生活。在佛山霍利斯工作，老师们拥有来自学校的全面照顾和关心，能利用假期游历中国各地，而且我们的学生和家长们都非常尊重并认可他们的辛勤付出。正因如此，佛山霍利斯的教师流动率远远低于其它学校。最重要的是，佛山霍利斯的老师们有足够的时间与资源来为学生们提供高质量的教学，他们虽然忙碌，却是快乐以及有目标的。

Next week is exam week for all students in Year 6-10. Students have now received a personalised timetable that shows them where their exams are taking place and which subject comes at which time. There will be no normal teaching lessons during the week, apart from PE lessons to ensure students get plenty of opportunity for physical activity, and ELL lessons for those students that would normally receive them.

下周是6-10年级全体学生的考试周。我们已为学生发放了个人时间表，里面包含每个人的考试科目、时间及地点。在考试周期间，学生将不再按照常规课程表上课，但体育课会照常进行，确保学生能够得到充足的锻炼机会。同时，英语教学支持课程也将照常进行。

This is a week where students will take an assessment in almost all of their subjects. Whilst I know that students are keen to do well and have been preparing in both their lessons and during independent study times, these exams should not be seen as overly significant in terms of future potential success. Instead, they are an opportunity for students to experience some of the formality of exams, to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and most importantly, for teachers to identify areas of strength and weakness that will aid planning for lessons over the next academic year.

在考试周里，学生将参加几乎所有科目的考试。学生们课上课下都非常认真备考，希望能考取好成绩。但我需要提醒大家，考试结果并不能决定学生人生的成功与否。考试的真正目的在于，让学生能够亲身体验考试的不同形式，展示他们所学的知识和技能。更重要的是，老师能够通过考试为学生找出强项和弱项，以便更好地规划下一学年的课程计划。

Exam week is fast approaching, and the Mathematics department has been trying to help students use their time in class and their private study time to make sure they have learnt the math facts and can apply them to answer a variety of questions. Everyone might revise quite differently but here are some examples of good practice when revising mathematics.

随着考试周的临近，数学学科一直在努力帮助学生们充分利用课堂及自习时间，确保他们掌握好相关的数学知识，并能运用这些知识回答各种问题。每个学生都有自己的复习习惯和方式，以下是一些复习数学的小方法，供各位学生参考。

On Tuesday 24th May, the Year 10 Design and Technology class visited IKEA in Foshan to research products to help with their IGCSE coursework. The focus for the students is on lighting so they explored the different types of lighting and some designs that are already available.

5月24日星期二，10年级选修了设计工艺学科的学生们前往了佛山宜家家居进行参观，研究家居产品，以帮助他们完成IGCSE课程作业。本次的探究重点是照明设备，因此学生们对几种不同类型的照明设备和已有的设计进行了深入探索。

The pupils will use the research to help them to complete their design portfolios and aid them in designing and making their own professional looking products which will be assessed as part of the IGCSE course. The students enjoyed the trip and came back with lots of valuable research and full stomachs from the café.

学生们将根据本次的研究成果，完成他们的作品集，并设计和制作出自己的产品。这也将会作为IGCSE课程的评估项目。学生们收获颇多，非常享受本次小旅行。

The Year 11 students have a week off public examinations next week as it is half-term in the United Kingdom. To celebrate this, we are publishing their Valedictory Reports which highlight the contributions that they have made to school life, note the personal characteristics that they have shared with their peers and teachers and look forward to their return in the Sixth Form - or wish them well if they are venturing further afield. As a school we are very proud of the way in which the Year 11 students especially have dealt with the trials and tribulations of the last two years, and we look forward to celebrating their examination successes in the New Academic Year in September.

Year 11 recently used a Boarding House screening of Twelfth Night recorded at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London, to enhance their IGCSE Literature revision. The production was performed with an all-male cast – as it would have been in Shakespeare’s time, four hundred years ago – and with clothing and musical instruments authentic to the period, in front of a lively audience. Over two intensive revision sessions, the students were able to pause the action and discuss the text and the actors’ interpretations with an English teacher, and to enjoy the performances: this appreciation helped to increase their confidence and preparedness as they approached their exam.

11年级的学生最近在宿舍公共区域一同观看在伦敦莎士比亚环球剧院录制的《第十二夜》，以加深他们对IGCSE文学科目的理解。这部作品的所有角色均由男性演员出演——就像四百年前莎士比亚的时代一样，演员穿着那个时代的服装，演奏着那个时代的乐器，在观众面前生动形象地进行演出。在两节复习指导课上，学生们能够剖析作品的动作，与英语老师讨论台词和演员的讲述，并欣赏表演。组织学生一同欣赏文学作品的演出有助于增强他们的信心，并为考试做好准备。

The boarding students enjoyed a trip to the Rainbow mall this weekend, as did the owners of the supermarket who appeared to sell out their snack collection, judging by the number of full plastic bags that accompanied the student’s home (preparation for another movie night). Thanks go to Mrs Kirk for her help with the supervision; to the students in Years 7 – 11 who were a credit to the school, and to the bus drivers who dealt very well with the influx of eager-to-pay passengers who might not have had the correct method to hand.

上周末，在学校寄宿的孩子们前往天虹广场享受了一场购物之旅。学生们都非常开心，提着满满当当的零食回来（为下一场电影之夜做足准备）。感谢Mrs Kirk的陪同，感谢7-11年级学生们的配合，感谢让我们几乎包车的公交车司机！这次购物之旅非常顺利！

LEH Foshan will hold an Inter-house Dragon Boat Race with inflatable dragons on Thursday, 2nd June to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival as well as the completion of our first whole school internal examinations.

端午节将至，学校将于6月2日（星期四）举行学院旱龙舟大赛，同时也庆祝我们第一次校内考试周的圆满结束。

This will be the very first school sport event to take place on the school football pitch.

本次学院旱龙舟大赛将在学校足球场上进行。

Huanhu Primary School, our next-door neighbour, have been invited and they will send their teams to participate in the race. It will be our very first community event.

我们非常开心能够邀请到环湖小学来一起参加比赛。这将是我们第一个社区活动。

Y6 Students' Work 六年级学生作品

Some Year 6 and Year 9 pupils have devised posters for the race and the festival. Whilst doing so, they have learned that we do not say “端午节快乐”, instead we say ‘端午节安康’, as the festival commemorates the patriotism of QU Yuan from 2300 years ago. Pupils were surprised to find out that the festival has such an ancient origin.

6年级和9年级的学生为龙舟赛和端午节精心设计了海报。在制作过程中，他们了解到我们不说 “端午节快乐”，而应说 “端午节安康”，因为这个节日是为了纪念2300年前诗人屈原的爱国精神。了解到端午节竟有如此悠久长远的历史，学生们感到受益匪浅。 

Y9 Students' Work 九年级学生作品

Mr Joe Longardner, father of Jack (Year 10) will be performing with his Jazz Quartet at the Foshan Opera on Sunday 26th June at 15.00. Joe and Jack performed at the Spring Concert. 

Jack（10年级）的父亲Mr Joe Longardner将于6月26日（星期天）15点在佛山大剧院与他的爵士乐四重奏小组进行演出。父子二人曾在我校春季音乐会上进行表演。

Do put this date in your diaries, they really are a first-class band, and I fully recommend this musical moment before the end of this academic year. All students, staff and parents are welcome to attend.

The final PTC will take place on Friday 17th June. More details will follow as to timings and organisation, and we hope that as many parents as possible can meet with us to discuss your child’s progress throughout the year, their examination results and the way forward as they head into the new academic year in September.
