Recently, the Chinese Ministry of Education has released the new national curriculum for compulsory domestic labor, covering three main categories and ten task groups such as daily work, productive work and service work. This means that primary and secondary school students in China will be expected to take courses such as cooking, planting and cleaning.

The revised Chinese curriculum validates what TWIS has always believed in since its inception. By integrating service learning in the IB curriculum, TWIS students have plenty of opportunities to take meaningful action that benefits the school, its local community and the wider world. TWIS students make connections between what they learn from the classrooms and what they can practice in the community, and become caring citizens of the 21st century with social responsibility.

The entire ecosystem in the TWIS campus facilitates service learning where students are able to explore, act and reflect. We have community gardens for growing herbs and vegetables, animal farms and botanical gardens with a variety of flora and fauna, and well-equipped cooking facilities. These different areas benefit from the presence of our students who engage in planting and watering the plants, and feeding and petting our farm animals. Learning takes on a deeper meaning as students engage in hands-on experiential learning in authentic settings.

The IBO through its programmes has always encouraged IB learners to become caring community members who take action to improve the lives of others and the environment in the form of performing service.

Action (learning by doing and experiencing) is a key component in constructivist models of education, including the kind of teaching and learning common to all IB programmes. Service, as a subset of action, has always been a shared value of the IB community.

IB World Schools value service with others as an important way to engage in principled action across a range of overlapping local and global communities. Through responsible action, tightly connected with sustained inquiry and critical reflection, young people and adults can develop the kinds of attributes described by the learner profiles that are essential for success in future academic pursuits and for adult life .

MYP: From Principles to Practice

Taking Action in PYP

In the PYP, action is one of the elements of the programme in which there is an expectation that successful inquiry will lead to responsible action. This action is initiated by the student as a result of the learning process, which may involve service.

Service as Action in MYP

Action in the MYP builds upon the action initiated in the PYP and continues as an essential component of the learning process. The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community. Depending on the grade level, students are assessed at different levels and have different requirements for service and action.

Service as Action in DP

“服务即行动”在IBDP(国际文凭大学预科项目)阶段持续发展为CAS(创造、行动、服务)——国际文凭项目的一个核心组成部分。

"Service as Action" is part of the CAS programme (Creativity, Activity and Service) in the Diploma Programme. Students continue to increase their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth, undertake new challenges, and plan and initiate action.

Are you curious about how TWIS takes action to conduct the "Service as Action" in the IB Programmes? On May 28, selected families joined our Farm Fun Day to experience firsthand how we integrate acquiring practical skills in our curriculum.

Our PYP Coordinator and Community Project Coordinator delivered an enriching and comprehensive information session, sharing how TWIS students are implementing the Service as Action through the PYP  transdisciplinary learning and the MYP interdisciplinary learning. In addition to the presentations, students and parents visited the animal farm, botanical garden, community garden and cooking room to experience the daily life of TWIS students!

Sniff and Guess Game

How well do you know your herbs? Can you identify which ones are mint, rosemary, basil or lemon grass based on their smell and the shape of the leaves? There were quite a lot of good guesses from our guests!

Caring Animals at Petting Farm

The love for animals from a young age is a brilliant way to help children understand the concept of animal rights and improve animal welfare in the future. Invited families did not seem to mind the scorching heat as they became engrossed picking plants from the botanical garden to feed our rabbit family.

Planting at Community Garden

Our guests experienced the therapeutic effect of digging soil, planting vegetable seeds and watering their recycled milk cartons. At TWIS, we make a conscious effort to reduce our environmental impact by recycling and reusing as much as we can.

Cooking Time

The Cooking class is one of the most popular CASE activities at TWIS. The cooking classroom is well equipped with kitchen appliances and utensils, and fire-fighting facilities. Our units of inquiry also integrate the use of the cooking room as often as possible. On the open day, students and parents put their hands on making bruschetta. and lemongrass lemonade – the ingredients come from our gardener, of course.

Opening its campus is one way for TWIS to share with the local community what our students get to experience on a regular basis. It was indeed a FARM FUN-filled afternoon for visitors and our staff! Families who want to give children a full, enriching IB educational experience are welcome to contact us to find out about other exciting events happening in June.
