在本学期结束前的一个激动人心的下午，东华文泽学校第一届盛大的柔道大会在学校室内体育馆里如火如荼地进行着。彼时，年轻的柔道运动员正怀揣着紧张的心情勇敢地走向“道馆”的柔道台中央，他们即将在此展现在柔道俱乐部所习得的学习成果！

One exciting afternoon before the school year ends, the gym transforms into a dojo to hold the first-ever TWIS Judo Tournament. Our young athletes, known as judokas, take center stage with much trepidation and bravado. It is the moment of truth - it is time to celebrate and take into account what they have individually accomplished in their judo club.

柔道大会严格采用国际柔道比赛中所常用的IJF计分系统；参赛者按照年龄被分为“PYP小学组别”和“MYP中学组别”。本届柔道大会的裁判为柔道教练Mr. Nem，他练习柔道的时间超过15年，曾在家乡塞尔维亚和欧洲其他国家等地参赛，是众多世界级、国家级和城市级等级别的锦标赛的奖牌得主。

Our judo contenders are categorized into 2 groups: PYP and MYP. The International Judo Federation (IJF) official scoreboard is projected onscreen. Mr. Nem, the judo coach, enters the scene as the event's referee. Mr. Nem has been practicing judo for over 15 years, and has competed and won multiple times both in his home country and in Europe.

开赛前，每一位选手登上柔道台，面向对手相互鞠躬行礼，紧接着便是紧张和激烈的角逐。追溯历史，柔道创立的初衷，并不以追求胜负为唯一目标，而是以身体锻炼和身心教育为主。“精力善用”是柔道创始人嘉纳治五郎的名言，指的是将自己的力量、技巧达到最佳运用，因此柔道是世界上发展身体协调性的最佳运动之一。

Before the start of the intense competition, each contender steps onto the mats and bows to their opponents. Tracing its history, judo was not created with the sole objective of winning or losing, but rather with the objective of physical exercise and spiritual education. Judo is one of the best sports in the world for developing coordination as well-known mottoes attributed to Kanō Jigorō, founder of Judo, include "maximum efficiency with minimum effort".

尽管柔道被认为是一种“武术”，但相较于其他运动如拳击、空手道等，柔道拥有相对较高的安全指数，因为它不用涉及激烈的拳击，便能很好地调动身体的各个部位。

Even though Judo is considered a "martial art", it is quite safe relative to other sports such as boxing, karate, etc. The reason being is that there is no punching involved, however, all the physically attained benefits are there.

在日语中，柔道的真正含义是“柔之道”，即“温和的方式”，其中最讲究是“以柔克刚”，经过多年的练习，人们能够不断磨练自己的柔术，从而达到毋需动用过多力量，便能运用平衡和杠杆原理来控制“对手”。

In Japan, Judo in its true meaning is "the gentle way". After years of being engaged in the discipline, judokas are able to hone their skills and control their "opponents" without using much force, but by using levers and their own inertia against them.

“自他共荣”是紧随嘉纳治五郎名言“精力善用”的后半部分，指的是在博弈的过程中柔道选手不只是追求自己的进步，而是与他人一起共同成长——这也是TWIS的柔道教练举办柔道大会的缘由。他认为：“从柔道学到的最重要的精髓之一是来自社交层面，开赛前鞠躬行礼，从根源上教会了我们遵守纪律、互相尊重和保持谦逊，这些都是一个人可以拥有的最珍贵的品质。”

"Mutual Prosperity for Self and Others" is followed by "Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort" in the famous phrase from Kanō Jigorō. It means that a judoka does not just pursue his own goal, but grows together with peers, which is also the vision that our Judo Coach is committed to passing on to his students. "In my opinion, one of the most important things learned from Judo comes from the social side. In its roots, Judo teaches us discipline, respect, and how to stay humble, which are some of the most important attributes a person can possess."

虽然TWIS的柔道项目还处于初级阶段，但柔道选手在柔道大会上的优异表现出乎我们的预料——比赛十分激烈，一度胜负难分。我们很自豪地看到，学生的每一个柔道动作都展现了对运动本身的尊重和坚持锻炼的决心。

正如柔道教练Mr. Nem在开场致辞上所说：

“当我初次接触柔道时，我知道‘比赛’是我必须跨越的重大里程碑之一。踏上坐落于无数观众面前的垫子，忐忑不安，担心能力不足，内心不够笃定自信，害怕在众人面前出丑......然而，对于那些能够跨越这一障碍的人来说，比赛会让你受益匪浅，无论输赢，比赛赋予你重新了解自我的机会，让你对生活更有韧性，也让你学会如何更加尊重同伴和体育运动本身。”

Although the TWIS judo program is at its infancy, our judokas' performance during the competition surprised the spectators. The determination to give one's personal best is evident. The respect for the discipline is seen through every move.

As Mr. Nem observed,

"For me, when I was starting out this was one of the biggest milestones I has to cross. Stepping on the mats in front of the audience, while not being sure of myself, afraid that I am not good enough and that I will embarrass myself was no easy task. However, for those people who are able to cross this milestone, they have nothing but good things coming their way. No matter whether you win or lose, competing makes you learn about yourself, it makes you more resilient to life's challenges, and teaches you how to have more respect to both to your peers and sports."
