"Are you a good astronaut?"

This is the first question that British contemporary artist, designer and writer Dave Bramston proposed to our students at the AISL Harrow Zhuhai Master Class last Friday.

As the guest lecturer for the second Master Class, Mr Bramston, who is currently holding an art exhibition in Shunde, was invited by Harrow to come to Hengqin to give a unique contemporary art class to the pupils of Harrow Zhuhai.

Mr. Dave Bramston

Contemporary Artist, Designer, and Author

Art Lecturer at the University of Lincoln, UK

Director of the Bramston Studio Limited, UK

By quoting the concept of 'astronaut' by Buckminster Fuller, a pioneering American inventor, architect and second President of Mensa Club, Mr. Bramston took our Harrovians on a highly meaningful journey of discovery into the modern arts.

Everyone is an Astronaut

As a multidisciplinary artist and designer, Mr. Bramston specializes in making artworks from eco-friendly and recycled materials and has given over 100 design lectures and workshops worldwide. He has also authored several design books on the subject of "idea generation" and "material use".

In order to open the minds of Harrow students to creative arts, he invoked Buckminster Fuller's concept of 'astronauts' from his famous book Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth, which cleverly led to the topic of artistic sustainability.

In his book Fuller says "If the Earth were a spaceship, then every man would be an astronaut. The ship cannot dock in space for supplies, so as a responsible astronaut, each person needs to make the best use of what is given".

Mr Bramston went on to share a series of his artworks, using unexpected waste materials to create a number of aesthetically pleasing contemporary artworks, which have been exhibited in many places in the UK, USA and China. Mr Bramston told our Harrovians that the essence of creating art is to discover the beauty in life and that by using discarded materials we can all become responsible 'astronauts'.

Mr Bramston told our Harrovians that the essence of creating art is to discover the beauty in life and that by using discarded materials we can all become responsible 'astronauts'.

Our Harrovians were curious about Mr Bramston’s art work as it was very different from what they had learnt in the art class. Students raised their hands to ask questions in English. "Why do you like contemporary art?" , "How should I learn about art?" , and Vegas, a fifth grader even asked "What is the profit model for an artist?" The artist patiently answered all of our children's questions.

Our Harrow Zhuhai students cherished the opportunity to interact with the master and the artist was impressed by the confident and brave Harrow students, exclaiming "Harrow students are really different from other Chinese school children I have seen!"

Co-creation with the Artist

Mr. Bramston has a knack for inspiring students and has led exhibitions of design installations by young designers in Italy, the UK, the USA and China. After his lecture, the artist engaged in an art co-creation session with Harrow students, giving them a hands-on experience of the process of creating modern art using simple materials.

A hula hoop, a skateboard converted from a scrap of wood, a few used plastic bottles filled with paint ...... These humble objects were transformed into a set of art installations under the master’s hands. Under his guidance, students began to explore art on drawing paper.

Inspired, our Harrow students kicked off their own creativity, using ping pong balls and paper cones from the classroom to create their artworks. Mr. Bramston told the children that the aesthetics of contemporary art exist in the process of creating art, and that there are many creative moments where you can find beauty, and that using multimedia to record these creative moments can make the work more diverse.

Mr. Bramston also encouraged our Harrovians who enjoy art: "Artwork usually doesn't take long to make, but it often takes a long time to perfect and sometimes you can forget about the time, but you will enjoy it. You should find what you love to do in life, be good at finding things around you, use your imagination to the fullest, enjoy the process of creating and bring more beauty to others."

The Master Class is one of the many new initiatives starting from this academic year.

In the last AISL Harrow Zhuhai Master Class,

the school has invited Badminton World Champion Ms. Ma Jin

to give a unique PE lesson to our Harrovians.

The Programme Lead of the Master Class Series

Head of Marketing and Admissions at Harrow Zhuhai

Mr. Constantine Yu

"The Master Class is a reflection of Harrow‘s holistic education philosophy on our Zhuhai campus. By bringing together world-class learning opportunities, we can give our Zhuhai Harrovians more and better learning experiences. Not only will children be able to learn from the masters through these open classes, they will also be able to expand their horizons and enlighten their love for learning. In the future, we will bring in more market and educational resources to provide learning and development opportunities for our children at Harrow."
