Here comes the year of the rabbit! With a festive, warm, and dynamic tone, Tungwah Wenzel International School (TWIS) welcomes the coming of the Chinese New Year.

People celebrate the arrival of Chinese New Year in so many ways.  The TWIS way is probably the most distinctive since it expertly combines the IB Chinese curriculum, performing arts and aesthetic movement program, and expertise clubs to make the Chinese New Year celebration a unique and unforgettable event. The Chinese culture has a history of 5000 years. One successful way to keep customs and traditions alive is to embrace change and innovation. At TWIS, students and teachers in Chinese classes boldly integrate traditional culture with modern elements to bring new life and vitality to the Chinese culture.

功夫是中国传统文化的体现。从古至今，少林功夫缔造了无数的英雄形象。在中国新年庆典上，来自PYP小学三年级的学生带来了创新版的《少林英雄》，完美地融合拳术与舞蹈，以短小精悍的拳路，刚劲有力的动作，吸引了众多目光和关注。

Kung Fu is the embodiment of traditional Chinese culture and has created countless heroic images. Our PYP3 students performed Shaolin Heroes, a seamless fusion of dance and Kung Fu with quick, sharp and powerful movements.

《精卫填海》的神话故事在中国家喻户晓。作为中文课程神话单元的重点课文，来自PYP小学四年级的学生决定用另一种方式来阐释它。在学习的过程中，他们震撼于精卫填海的勇气，但对女娃的溺亡倍感惋惜。结合当下新冠疫情的语境，四年级全体学生创作了《新编·精卫填海》的现代版剧本，从剧本的创作、修改，演员的选拨，到道具、服装的准备，他们协同配合，自编、自导、自演，成功地将剧本搬上舞台，他们的表现全面地展现了IB学生的学习能动性。

Everyone in China grew up with the myth of The Bird Jingwei Trying to Fill Up the Sea. When our PYP4 students discussed the story in class, they were astounded by Jingwei's bravery but they felt sorry for the drowning of the young girl, Niu Wa. So they decided to reinterpret it in a different way by creating a modern version set during the pandemic. Students took charge of all parts of production – from writing the script, choosing actors, creating costumes and props, and finally performing in front of an audience. Our PYP4 students have shown what the IB student agency is all about.

古筝也是中华文化的象征之一。在中国新年庆典上，三名中学生采用了古筝与钢琴来合奏《兰亭序》歌曲，将中华文化的古韵之美以中西合璧的方式娓娓道来，展示了新一代青少年对文化传承与创新的思考。回顾2022年，TWIS取得的一项令人骄傲的成就是，一名学生在英国国际音乐比赛中弹奏古筝获得了最高奖项。

The guzheng, one of the Chinese traditional musical instruments, is one of the instruments students learn to play at the TWIS Music Academy. At the Chinese New Year Gala, MYP students used the guzheng and piano to perform the song Lanting Xu ("Orchid Pavilion Preface"), bringing out the beauty of Chinese culture's ancient charm in an East-meets-West way, illuminating the perspectives of the younger generation on cultural heritage and innovation. One proud achievement for TWIS this year is when a student won the highest award for playing the guzheng in the UK International Music Competition.

陶瓷工艺也体现了中华文化的独特韵味。在TWIS，学生有机会在艺术课和课外活动中学习陶艺的制作。而在本学期的中文课上，MYP中学二年级的全体学生探索了多种体裁的文学文本、文学中的人与自然的关系，并学习了中国文学是如何运用意象营造氛围和抒发情思的。以《青花瓷》这一古风歌曲为载体，学生们带领着大家一起领略古典文学独特的意境美。

Ceramic craft also reflects the unique charm of the Chinese traditional heritage. TWIS students learn about pottery as part of their art class and extra-curricular activities. In the Chinese language and literature class, our MYP2 students explored literary works from a range of genres, the relationship between man and nature in literature, and how imagery is used in Chinese literature to convey feelings and emotions. Through the classic song Blue and White Porcelain, our students shared with the audience the unique beauty of classical literature.

众所周知，梁启超先生的名篇《少年中国说》在中国近代史上有着举足轻重的地位；同时，它也是PYP小学五年级中文超学科单元“我们如何表达自己”的重要篇章。在学习的过程中，学生结合《将相和》、《圆明园的毁灭》等篇章，以表演、撰写读后感与观后感等多种方式体会中国人代代相传的“家国天下”的责任感。有感于“少年强则国强”，五年级学生完成了《少年是什么》、《我想/不想成为什么样的少年》的创作，最后在舞台上以朗诵的方式呈现给现场观众，热切地展现了朝气蓬勃的少年之声。

As we all know, Mr. Liang Qichao's famous prose The Young China plays a pivotal role in modern Chinese history. It is also a key chapter for our PYP5 students when inquiring about the unit "How We Express Ourselves". During the process of acting and writing, students gained insights into social responsibility towards the family, the country, and the world. They completed the creation of "What is a youth" and "What kind of youth do I want or do I not want to be", and finally presented them to the audience in the form of recitation, demonstrating the energetic voice of the country’s future leaders, movers, shakers and changers.

在中国，春节往往蕴涵着一种强大的精神和情感力量。每逢此时，人们总会在充满仪式感的氛围下直观地表达自己内心的情感，送上美好祝愿。而在TWIS，不同年级的学生则以各式各样的现代艺术来抒发自己的内心情感。

通过一学期的学习、实践和反思，MYP中学三年级学生对文化与精神对个体所产生的巨大影响有了更加深入的认识和了解。在舞台上，他们唱响了《我乘着风飞过来》的歌曲，表达了不忘初心、以梦为马的人生追求。

In China, the Chinese New Year generally connotes a powerful spiritual and emotional force. It is a time when individuals become more expressive to convey their sincere greetings to friends and loved ones. At TWIS, students in different grades express their feelings and wishes through the creative and performing arts.

Through a semester of learning, practicing and reflecting, MYP3 students developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of the tremendous impact that culture and spirituality can have on an individual. On stage, they sang the song Fly with the Wind, expressing the pursuit of a dream.

过去这三年，是无数人的默默奉献为我们撑起一片天，因此，来自PYP小学二年级的学生Judy独唱了一首《You Raise Me Up（你鼓舞了我）》以表感激之情，感情细腻，真挚动人。

The past three years have not been easy for everyone. Fortunately, we have each other to rely on. Judy, our PYP2 student, expressed her gratitude for the dedication of countless people with her solo rendition of You Raise Me Up.

PYP小学一年级学生年龄虽小，目前尚处于汉字识读和书写的开始阶段，但他们自信又大胆地选择了《孤勇者》作为中国新年表演曲目，代表着勇往直前的精神和对未来的憧憬。如歌词所言，他们每一个人都是勇士。

New Year is about a fresh start, coming up with new resolutions to become better. Here’s PYP1 showing their determination to be brave and overcome difficulties. As the youngest group currently at the beginning steps of learning and writing Chinese character literacy, they were challenged to perform a song Lonely Warriors.

对很多人来说，校园时光总会是印在心中永不褪色的青春记忆。以中文为第三语言的中学生乐队The Last Minute对此深有同感。来自不同国家的他们在学习“学校生活”主题单元后，对校园生活有了全新的理解和感悟。他们选择在中国新年庆典上演唱《告白气球》，通过这一青春洋溢的歌曲对美好的青春时代做一个最真诚的告白。

Many people's memories of their school days as children will last forever. The Last Minute Band, MYP students who are learning Chinese as their third language, felt the same way. After studying the Chinese unit on "School Life", the students gained a new understanding and appreciation of school life. They chose to perform the popular song Love Confession at the Chinese New Year Gala.

Youth, in the words of The Last Minute Band, offers people hope and vigor. Did another MYP band's song Sunny Day bring you back memories of the day you first heard it years ago?

在MYP中学四年级和五年级的学生看来，庆祝中国新年的活动应该是活泼的、热闹的、充满活力的。结合体育审美运动单元所学，他们给我们带来了一场极富创意的舞蹈串烧节目。

For MYP4 and MYP5 students, their dance mix choreographed in the PE aesthetic movement unit, showed how celebrating Chinese New Year should be lively, energetic and filled with loud noises to welcome a new beginning.

精彩的舞蹈表演让人意犹未尽？我们还有PYP小学二年级、MYP中学一年级以及KNT舞蹈组合的舞蹈表演，他们以充满活力和感染力的肢体语言传递着新春的祝福。

Can't get enough of the wonderful dance performances? PYP2, MYP1, and the KNT Dance Group delighted us with their high-energy performances ending with sincere best wishes for the new year.

为了突出传统服饰在中国历史和文化中的重要地位，TWIS中文部门发起了TWIS首届家庭服装秀。在兔年庆典上，他们身穿或清新淡雅、或隆重喜庆、或典雅大气的传统汉服，犹如烟花般绽放着服装之美。

The event featured for the first time a TWIS Family Fashion Show to highlight the vital part traditional clothing plays in the country’s history and culture. The elegance of the texture, colors and patterns of the traditional attire from different dynasties appeared to be like a firework display.
