“Without words, without writing and without books, there would be no history, there would be no concept of humanity.”

——Hermann Hesse

The annual Harrow Book Week is here!

This year, the theme is "The Magic of Words"

bringing students a relaxed, fun, reading week

Let reading happen everywhere, anytime!

As a young man, I always had a deep love for books. My parents were both avid readers, and they instilled in me a passion for reading from a very young age. We would often sit together at the dinner table, discussing the stories we had read, and my beautiful mother would read to me, filling my mind with tales of history, adventure, and poetry. I would often retreat to my bedroom, immersing myself in stories and losing myself in my own imagination.

However, it was JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings that truly captured my heart and imagination. The author's insight and the world he created, with its beautiful and inspirational language, helped shape my thinking, writing, and speaking, providing me with a rich vocabulary and phrases that I could never have imagined as a bilingual learner.

Dr. Max Caruso, Head Master of Harrow Zhuhai

played the role of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings

I truly believe that reading is essential for cognitive development, improving vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, memory, analytical skills, belief, empathy, and emotional resilience. But for me, reading is also a source of pure joy. There is nothing quite like losing oneself in a book, feeling the weight of it in your hands, and being transported to a world created by the author but interpreted by your own imagination.

01

Wonderful Reading Classes

It has been a fun week of colourful and diverse books! Under the Book Week theme, reading has become the active theme of the week. Teachers led the class in reading original books in Chinese and English, describing the content of the books in vivid ways, with the students paying attention and being engaged and excited throughout.

02

Reading Happens Everywhere

One of the activities during the reading week was call the DEAR Time. DEAR means "Drop Everything and Read " and it refers to a variety of reading time where students were could instantly dive into reading. Some teacher even set up book tent for pupils to focus on reading, joyfully in a diverse environment.

There’s no boundary for reading and Harrow students sit and read on the grass, steps or beneath the trees. Reading provides Harrow students with a wide range of information and knowledge to enhance their understanding of the world.

03

Get Hands-on

with the Bookmarks

During Book Week, we also held many reading or book related activities. One of these are the bookmark creation competition, where Harrow students were free to use their imagination to paint their own bookmarks with colours and lines.

04

Explore at the Book Fair

In this Book Week, Harrow Zhuhai has organized a book fair on campus, with a wide range of Chinese, English and bilingual books on science, physics, literature and history, and many imported books. The students couldn't get enough of their favourite books. Some immediately started to share them with their classmates, while others started to read intently from the sidelines, learning about what's happening in the world and different perspectives and experiences.

05

Book Week Parade

One of the most anticipated events of the Reading Week was the costume day - a parade of book characters in costume. The students, teachers and families of Harrow Zhuhai came to school dressed up in their favourite books. A costume parade were organized on the playground to bring the characters from the books to life in front of the students.

Dr. Caruso, the Head Master, was transformed into Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings, with his grey beard and grey cloak and profound wisdom, while, Ms. Elise Li, the Chinese principal, was transformed into a black-haired witch from Sleepy Hollow.

The students played the roles of the Witch's House, Chainsaw Man, Snow White, Bugs Bunny, Princess Elsa, Jin Yi Wei (secret service agent of Ming Dynasty) and many more.
