Happy International Pi Day 2023!

International Pi Day is an annual celebration held on March 14th (3/14), commemorating the mathematical constant pi (π). Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter and is approximately equal to 3.14159. This day is celebrated worldwide by mathematicians, educators, and enthusiasts who take part in various events and activities to promote mathematics and educate people about the significance of pi in our daily lives. The first official Pi Day celebration took place in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium, and since then, it has become a popular day to engage in fun and educational activities that celebrate the beauty of mathematics.

国际圆周率日是每年的 3 月 14 日 (3/14) 举行的庆祝活动，以纪念数学常数 pi (π)。Pi 是圆的周长与其直径之比，大约等于 3.14159。世界各地的数学家、教育工作者和爱好者都在庆祝这一天，他们参加各种活动和活动来推广数学并教育人们了解圆周率在我们日常生活中的重要性。第一次正式的圆周率日庆祝活动于 1988 年在旧金山探索馆举行，从那时起，这一天人们都会参与到有趣的教育活动之中，庆祝数学之美。

Tsinglan middle school students and teachers celebrated Pi Day in order to appreciate the beauty of mathematics in a fun and educational way. This also gave us a way to connect with others who share a passion for math. Here’s a glimpse of how Pi Day was celebrated at our Tsinglan Middle School.

All middle school students and teachers gathered together in the shape of Pi. It was a fun and memorable event.

Eating Pies

It is a tradition to eat pies on Pi Day because the word "pie" sounds like "pi".

Did you know that 3.14 flipped the other way around in the mirror spells out “PIE”?

Pi Day Trivia

In math classes, students learned about the history of pi and then participated in a Pi Day Trivia Quiz to test their knowledge. They earned rewards for their success.

Pi Day Games

Our students from grade 8 organized games and activities on this occasion such as a memory challenge, sudoku, and many more. This gave the students the opportunity to learn more about this Greek constant and earn rewards.

“I had never heard of Pi Day before and wasn't expecting much from it. But throughout the experience, I was actually able to learn and have fun. First, I think the Pi photo was cool and interesting." "Then there were pies on Pi Day, which was one of the reasons why I loved Pi Day". Furthermore, "the little booth outside of the cafe was math related, but somehow fun at the same time. I guess it was because of the rewards, which pushed me to learn and engage in math. Last but not least, in math class, we learned about what Pi Day is and why Pi is important in our life. I never knew that Einstein was born on Pi day! So, I would love to have Pi Day again. I think it was such a fun learning experience.”

“I would say that I quite enjoyed the pi day. Firstly, I liked the event we did where we did math questions and games for snacks and prizes. It was in the spirit of celebrating math, and also got some snacks to eat! In addition to it, we got to wear something unique for the day. Our Pi day shirts!”

“我非常享受圆周率日。首先，我喜欢我们举办的活动，我们在那里做数学题和游戏以获得零食和奖品。这既庆祝了数学的精神，也赢得了一些零食吃！除此之外，我们还可以穿上当天独一无二的衣服。我们的圆周率日衬衫！”

“On Pi day, there were a lot of activities. For example, we had challenges and games at lunchtime where we could win snacks. In math class, we had quizzes and songs to help us get a deeper understanding of Pi. We also made the shape of Pi wearing our Pi day shirt. My favorite part of Pi day was having math class. In class, we had songs about Pi to help us remember the first 100 digits. The lyrics of the songs were so attractive that there are still people singing them around now! It was fun memorizing them, and competing with other classmates to see who can memorize the most. We also had quizzes to see how much we knew about Pi, even though I got many of the questions wrong, I learned many things. For example, two of the interesting facts that I learned are that Albert Einstein’s birthday is on Pi day and that the symbol of Pi was introduced by William Jones. Pi day was a fun and interesting day, I liked it a lot.”

To conclude, Pi is a fundamental mathematical constant that has been studied for centuries. By celebrating Pi Day, we can honor this important constant and its contributions to the field of mathematics. Looking forward to celebrating this event again next year.
