“Literacy is a journey, not a race.”
——Bonnie Hill Campbell
On Wednesday, March 15th, EY held the second parent workshop. The workshop is about the THRASS framework of Early Years. The objectives of this workshop are to outline key areas of early literacy; understand the role of THRASS in developing literacy; provide practical and fun tips to increase children’s confidence in literacy skills.
Mr. Brian led the parents to share their early memories associated with learning a language. Sights? Sounds? Feelings? Parents all came to an agreement that sounds and environment are the most important keys. Under the introduction of Ms. Teresa, the scene “6 Key Areas of Early Literacy” gradually became clear in the minds of parents, they are phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing.
“What is THRASS?” THRASS is an acronym for Teaching Handwriting, Reading, Speaking, and Spelling. It is a system for teaching learners about the letters, speech sounds, and spelling choices of English.
Parents have captured a journey of how THRASS been taken place in the classroom, by means of participating in the same group activities as children, parents had personally experienced various games to learn about THRASS from different level approaches.
Parents acquire knowledge on ways to support literacy learning at home and assist children to develop. Parents gained insight through nursery rhymes, reading, and together, playing charade games are all good ways to embrace literacy at home.
