Making brochures the persuade & inform

In grades 6-10 students explored nonfiction reading and writing by creating brochures to inform an audience on a topic connecting the literature they were reading to the wider community. In English students become familiar with a wide variety of texts and the various formats readers may find them such as a poster, brochures, or reports. Writers use different types of writing in these formats for specific purposes. Students worked in pairs or individually gathering information from researching a topic and gathering evidence from the literary texts they were reading and presenting this information to inform readers using bullet point notes, images, layout, art, headings & sub headings, and carefully selecting what ideas they wanted to focus on. Students had to determine what information was relevant, had to identify main ideas, and had to summarize or put into note form these ideas. Ideas were presented in a certain way to engage an audience and be visually appealing. Students learned from each other’s brochures incorporating ideas they liked. In class students discussed how the brochure format was used for effect and in certain contexts and how its use of more succinct language could be persuasive for readers.
