Design in the IB Middle Years

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11-16, aiming to provide a structured way of learning and encourage students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. It emphasizes intelligence, challenges, and encourages students to build connections between traditional subject content and the real world. It supports students to develop communication skills, multicultural understanding and global involvement. In addition to many other qualities, these are the basic qualities that students need to have to become active and leading members of the international community.

国际文凭中学项目(MYP)专为11-16岁的学生设计,旨在提供结构化的学习方式,鼓励学生成为创造性批判性和反思性的思考者。它强调智力和挑战,并鼓励学生在传统学科内容和现实世界之间建立联系。它支持学生发展沟通技能、多元文化理解和全球参与,除其他许多素质外,这些都是学生成为国际社区积极参与者和领导者所需的基本素质。

The MYP design course challenges all students to:

· apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve design problems;

· explore the role of design in both historical and contemporary contexts.

· consider their responsibilities when making design decisions and taking action.

At CISK, students study design in two distinct courses,  digital design  and  product design , from Grade 6 to Grade 10.

Digital Design

As Mr. Karl Holloway, our teacher of digital design,  says, technology is expanding every day, and understanding the essentials of computers is growing ever dominant. In his class, students begin learning the fundamentals of programming, concepts such as Data structures, Algorithms, 3d modeling, Artificial Intelligence, and Animation programming.

In the early years of the program, the students develop a base for understanding how to apply research and problem-solving skills. The program moves forward at a steady pace and the students take all their knowledge and design User Interface tangible applications. Software design can be one of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of digital design.

By the end of the course, students will have a deft number of skills that they are able to use in their everyday lives which include academics, work, and various social environments. Consequently, understanding the importance of technology can expand the student’s critical thinking skills.

Product design

产品设计

According to Ms. Nancy Gu, inquiry and problem-solving are at the heart of MYP product design. The subject requires the use of the design cycle as a tool that provides the methodology used to structure the inquiry and analysis of problems, the development of feasible solutions, the creation of solutions, and the testing and evaluation of the solution. Students are expected to become actively involved in, and to focus on, the whole design process rather than on the final product/solution.

根据Nancy Gu老师的说法,探究和解决问题是中学产品设计的核心。该科目要求使用设计周期作为工具,提供用于组织探究和分析问题的方法,制定可行的解决方案,创造解决方案,以及测试和评估解决方案。学生应该积极参与并关注整个设计过程,而不是关注最终产品/解决方案。



In MYP product design, a solution can be defined as a model, prototype, or product that students have developed and created independently.
