Students’ mental health is a very important issue in OCAC. Led by Students’ Center, every department held some activities related with mental health recently. MYP held two activities during Advisory classes. They are “Beautiful Adolescence” from G7 “Anti-bulling” from G8.
On Nov. 9, MYP psychological counselor, He Jing, gave a lecture entitled "Beautiful Adolescence" to all Grade 7 students.
Start with warm-up activities. The students understood the group rules in the process of participation.
Then, by showing cartoons and explanation, Ms. He tried to let students understand that with the arrival of puberty, our body has undergone a series of changes. In the process of growing up, we should understand ourselves and take care of and protect ourselves.
Due to the imbalance of physiological and psychological development, we may encounter many contradictions. We want to be independent, but we need parents’ caring; we hide our true thoughts, but we are eager to communicate; we are easily to feel proud, but we often encounter frustration.
In puberty period, students are also very curious about the topic of interpersonal communication among opposite-sex peers. Through this lesson, students realized that we should keep the communication in a normal, natural, and moderate way.
Youth is beautiful. Through this activity, students are hoped to have more understanding of themselves and others, and will get more interpersonal communication principles and skills and get better growth.
On Nov.2, led by Mr. Anthony Bernardo, all Grade 8 students had a lesson of anti-bulling in their homerooms, and discussed the many issues about bullying in schools. After discussion, the students knew more about bullying, which may lead to psychological, emotional, and physical problems. They shared their experiences and discussed ways to prevent this from happening.
They made a commitment to support others who have been hurt or harmed, treat others with kindness, be more accepting of people’s differences, and help to include those who are left out.
Then, they drew posters hoping to let more people know the consequence of bullying, the prevention ways, how to protect themselves and how to protect others.
Students’ Feedback
Student Gao: Everyone has puberty, and physical development is also very normal. We should not talk about others because of their early or late development.
Student Zhou: Different ages have different meanings. Life is good.
Student Shen: In today's lecture, Mr. He introduced to us some changes in our physiology, psychology and behavior after we enter puberty, so that I can have a better understanding of myself. I also understand how to communicate with the opposite-sex students.
