Every child is like a ray of light, and the teacher is the one who can lead the students and brighten their future. ISA Liwan now have launchedthe 'Explorer' column. In each issue of this column, we will invite an elite member of ISA Liwan top faculty team to share their educational ideas and life experience, and help you better understand the real ISA Liwan.

In the second edition of 'Explorer', we invite Ms Chen Chen, the College Counselling Coordinator of ISA Liwan, who has rich experience in guiding students to pursue further studies and apply to universities. She will share how ISA Liwan concept of "top-down curriculum" is put into practice in the college counselling centre, and help students know themselves and make plans of their personal growth, give them more possibilities in the universities application, provide personalised guidance for further studies, and help them enter the best institutions that suit them.


第二期“引光者”,我们邀请到陈晨老师,她不仅是爱莎荔湾的升学指导中心主任,也是爱莎国际学苑升学指导协调员,在指导学生升学和申请院校方面有着十分丰富的经验。她将会给我们分享升学指导中心如何将爱莎荔湾的“以终为始”理念落到实处,并在这个过程中帮助学生更好地了解自己,做好人生规划,给予学生更多的可能性,提供个性化的升学指导,并协助他们进入适合自己的最好的院校。

- With more than 16 years of professional experience in school counselor; she monitored graduation records, transcripts and classes for more than five hundred students as the first school counselor in a local reputable high school. 

- Successfully guided students to be accepted by world top colleges, including Stanford University, Princeton University, Yale University, Columbia University, University of Chicago, Cambridge and Oxford etc. 

- She is a key member of the IACAC and has been a certified school counselor in 2011 by Collegeborad. 

- Entitled as Outstanding Educator (The University of Chicago, 2018-2020. 


- 拥有十六年以上国际教育事业的升学指导专业经验;曾任知名学校国际部第一任升学指导,向海外院校输送学生超过500人;

升学指导中心是学生的导航仪,相关老师执教的升学指导和生涯规划课也是让学生受益终身的课程。升学指的并不只是“大学申请过程”,而更重要的是包含了个人成长的长期规划。在个人成长方面,很多要素(也恰好是大学招生录取审核的要素)不是一蹴而就的,包括学术能力、语言能力、自制力、独立生活能力以及价值观等。这些要素的培养都需要经历一个全面长期的过程。升学指导中心会通过一系列完整的升学指导课堂和一对一的谈话等方式对学生所具备的能力做全面、清晰地分析从而给出合适的建议,引导学生如何去塑造这些能力,这些能力是可携转技能,可以转化到其他领域的学习中,这对学生个人的整体发展有不可估量的价值,也是能让学生获得名校青睐甚至社会认可的重点。

The College Counselling Centre for further studies is an important part of the international school team, which plays an important role in promoting daily education and teaching. The curriculum concept of "top-down" that often mentioned in ISA Liwan comes from the admission requirements of the admission offices of target universities and even the demand of job market. The focus of the work of college couselling centre is to set up a diversified development model for students according to their different personality characteristics, academic interests and abilities, so that students can have more chances in their future studies.


Experienced school counselors in the centre can provide students with personalised assistance, timely adjust the deviations in students' academic development, and eliminate the anxiety of students and parents about the application of universities. Also, it can assist students to apply to the universities that suit the students best for their future development.


The college counselling centre is a navigator for students in international high school, and its courses of guidance and career planning also benefit the students in rest of their life. International college application not only refers to the "apply to universities", but more importantly, to their long-term planning of personal growth. In student's personal growth, many factors (which happen to be the elements that college admissions consider) are not achieved in a quick time, including academic ability, language ability, self-control, independent living ability and their values. The cultivation of these elements needs to go through a comprehensive and long-term process. The college couselling centre will make a comprehensive and clear analysis of student's  abilities through a series of classes and one-on-one conversations, so as to give appropriate suggestions and guide students how to shape these abilities. These abilities are transferable skills, which can be used in other areas for learning. These will benefit overall development of students, and they are also the focus to enable students to be recognised by famous schools and even the society.

每个学生遇到的困难和挑战都不一样,有些学生还会有自己的特殊情况,但最常见的还是对升学的片面理解导致的焦虑问题,甚至引发心理问题。在申请大学的时候,许多学生和家长会通过五花八门的渠道获取对大学申请要求和程序的碎片化解读,很多时候学生会把许多细节在申请中的作用夸大,期望自己以最完美的形象出现在大学招生官面前,从而造成国际升学的内卷,引发焦虑。


对国际升学的片面理解主要包括以下几方面:

1.成绩单不是全A就没有学校要了;

2.标化考试成绩高理应被好大学录取,考不好就没书读;

3.简历上的竞赛、活动越多越好;

4.社会名流的推荐信很重要,高中老师的推荐信无价值;

5.文书要请高手打造到“完美”;

6.要参观校园或者上过这个学校的夏校,才能表“衷心”;

7.某个活动的含金量大,我要参加它才能进名校;

8.人文社科一定比理工科好录取;

9.尽管不少大学采取test-optional政策,但我不交就是劣势;

10.对于需要optional video的学校,我一定要请专业的团队来帮忙拍。

Every student might encounter different obstacles and difficulties on their ways of applying to universites, and some students will have their own situations, but the most common ones are anxiety problems caused by one-sided understanding of the application process, which may even lead to mental problems. When applying to a university, many students and parents will get a fragmented interpretation of the application process through a variety of channels, and they will exaggerate the role of many details in the application. They will expect themselves to perform perfectly in front of the university admissions officer, thus causing the involution and anxiety among students and parents.


The one-sided understanding of application mainly includes the following aspects:
1. If a student cannot get full A, he or she will not be recognised by any university.
2. high scores in the standardised examination should be the key to a good university. If a student did not do well in the exam, he or she will not be recognised by any university.

3. The more competitions and activities on a student's resume, the better the student is.

4. Recommendations from celebrities are very important, while the recommendations from high school teachers are worthless.
5. The resume of student should be made by the so-called experts in the areas of application, and it has to be "perfect".
6. Student has to participate the summer programme of their target university to show his or her "loyalt".
7. If a acitivity is "worth" paritipating, student has to take part in it in order to be recognised by a good university.
8. Humanities and social sciences programmes must be easier to be admitted than science and engineering programmes.
9. Although many universities adopt test-optional policy, it is a disadvantage if a student does not submit the test.
10. For universities that need optional video, student must ask a professional team to help shoot the video.


Actually, with the help of experienced teachers from the college counselling centre in ISA Liwan,  these difficulties and problems can be easily solved.

The college couselling centre in ISA Liwan is based on the educational concept of ISA Education Group, which aims to provide personalised support for students and their families. We are committed to helping every child find the most suitable choice for their further study. The advantage is that we have many experienced teachers and tutors in the field of universities application, who know how to cooperate with the teaching team to promote teaching, and will provide students with suggestions for further studies from the perspective of students' long-term development, and it will build talent channels between ISA International Education Group and overseas universities from a long-term perspective. In ISA Liwan, the goal of the college counselling centre is not only help students be admitted to a good university, but to help students develop their personality, explore academic interests, provide strategies of standardised examination, discuss the choices of universities application, guide participation in research-oriented extracurricular activities as well as the personal statement writing, and ultimately assist in the university applications. The growth of students has always been the core of our practice, and we attach great importance to the personal goals and growth of each student.

5. Set up parent workshops and communicate with parents regularly to reduce parents' anxiety.
6. Invite the teachers and admission officers from overseas universities to ISA Liwan, and help them to get to know the school and students face to face.
7. By participating in online or offline workshops and university exhibitions provided by overseas universities, we can maintain good communication with colleges and universities and obtain first-hand information on the enrollment of colleges and universities.

首先,我是一个喜欢挑战的人。从2011年4月加入原来的学校从第一届AP学生带起,到今年三月离开的时候已经是十一年了。过去的十一年,我在那儿经历了从只有我一个AP项目升学指导到团队壮大,从日常零星咨询到升学指导课纳入日常课表、建立完善的升学指导体系,并且发展至每年团队升学成果硕果累累。回顾这十一年的过程,我想是时候再来一次挑战。


其次,我是一个感性的人。眼缘相合、兴趣相投、理念一致对我很重要。我原来的学校有很多吸引我的地方,它也毫无疑问给了我个人成长的平台,我很感激。但当我想再给自己一次挑战的时候,爱莎荔湾的团队就是那个“时间的无涯的荒野里,没有早一步,也没有晚一步,刚巧赶上了“的团队。


最后,有人在得知我要离开原学校的时候,来跟我说:“你在现在的学校里,遇见的一定都是优秀学生,能去到很好的大学,会有成就感。”到底什么是优秀呢?我见过成绩好的学生很多,但在我看来成绩好与优秀并不能划等号。我的成就感也不应该只来源于个别学生的升学成绩,而是每个学生的每一点进步。我对这个问题的思考得出的答案也就成了我上面提到的爱莎荔湾升学指导中心的特色:我们重视每个学生的个人目标和成长。

First of all, I am a person who likes to challenge. It has been 11 years since I joined the previous school in April 2011 with my first group of AP students and left in March this year. In the past 11 years, I experienced the growth my AP project and my team, as it started from sporadic consultation and finally the guidance courses was put in students' daily schedule, established a  guidance system for college applications and many fruitful outcomes. Looking back on the past 11 years, I think it is time for another challenge.


Secondly, when I want to do something, I always follow my own heart and thought. It is very important for me that the school share the same values, similar interests and the same ideas with me. There are many attractions in the previous school, and it undoubtedly gives me a platform for my personal growth and I am very grateful. But when I want to give myself another challenge, ISA Liwan is the right team at a right time.


Finally, when someone learned that I was leaving my previous school, he came to me and said, "what you met in your previous school must be excellent students, as they can go to good universities, and you must have a sense of achievement." What exactly is excellence? I have seen many people with good grades, but in my opinion, good grades are not really equal to excellence. My sense of achievement should not only come from the grades of students, but from every progress made by each student. The answer to my reflection on this question has become a feature of college counselling centre in ISA Liwan that I mentioned above: we attach importance to each student's personal goals and growth.
