2020年12月7日,收到了来自美国格林内尔学院(美国文理学院排名第13)的提前批offer.

Olivia, a to-be graduate of Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School, received an ED offer from Grinnell College (ranked 13th among the US Liberal Arts College) on December 7, 2020.

Editor's Note: This is a young girl from Shanxi province who has strong learning ability, actively participates in class activities, and has a wide range of interests. She loves photography, food, fitness, drums, painting, etc. As she said in the interview, "I want my life to be colorful, challenging and surprising." During the years of studying alone in Shanghai, Olivia not only successfully adapted to international education, but also explored her true self in it.

格林内尔学院介绍:创建于1846年,位于爱荷内州,是2019年全美排名第11的美国文理学院。学术设施占地120英亩,包括致力于建筑旅游的Noyce科学研究中心和Bucks Baum艺术中心;占地365英亩的Canard环境研究区,距离学院14英里,用于研究教学,学院有着浓厚的文化氛围。在校生约为1500人,地处“全美最美好的小镇”之一的Grinnell镇,环境优美、雅致、安全。学校师生比例为8:1,学生和教师有很多交流机会,学生受到的关注也更多。该校被《华尔街时报》评为美国排名前15的法学院、商学院、医学院的“生源基地”。

Introduction to Grinnell College: Founded in 1846, it is located in Ihoney and is ranked 11th in the United States in 2019. Academic facilities cover an area of 120 acres, including the Noyce Science Research Center and Bucks Baum Art Center dedicated to architectural tourism; the Canard Environmental Research Area, which covers an area of 365 acres, is 14 miles from the college and is used for research and teaching. The college has a strong cultural transformation. There are about 1,500 students in the school, located in Grinnell, one of the "most beautiful towns in America", with a beautiful, elegant and safe environment. The teacher-student ratio of the school is 8:1, students and teachers have many opportunities for communication, and students receive more attention. The school is ranked among the top 15 law schools, business schools, and medical schools in the United States by the Wall Street Times.

享受上课

In-school learning

从小我的在校学习成绩就保持在一个我个人认为优秀的水准,而高成绩的保持主要得益于我上课的专注程度。上课专注可以让我全面透彻地理解知识点,及时解决自己的疑惑,这样课后作业的完成会有效率且高质量。其次,上课专注不仅仅靠我自己的努力,老师上课的方式也有很大的影响。幸运的是,我的学校的课堂都有较高的互动性和趣味性,至少我自己享受上课的过程。个人参与度越高,上课效率越高。但不可否认的是,对于一些我主观认为无趣的课程,我的成绩保持就需要依靠课后的努力。总而言之,在成绩提高这一方面,个人可以做的就是积极参与课堂。

Since I was young, my academic performance at school has been maintained at a level that I personally think is excellent, and the maintenance of high grades is mainly due to my concentration in class. Being focused in class allows me to fully understand the knowledge and solve my problems in time, so that the completion of homework after class is efficient. Secondly, the concentration in class is not only dependent on my own efforts, but also the way the teacher teaches. It is fortunate that the classes in my school are very interactive and interesting; at least I enjoy the class a lot. But it is undeniable that for some subjects that I subjectively consider to be boring, my grade counts on the effort after class. All in all, in terms of academic performance, my suggestion is to actively participate in class.

书呆子?才不是呢!

Hobbies

我是一个闲不住的人,我希望我的生活是丰富多彩,充满挑战和惊喜的。因此,在刚到上海读10年级时,我就自己找了学习架子鼓的工作室和油画画室。不到两年的架子鼓学习和油画学习让我的周末非常充实,一个新的节奏型的学习或者一幅画作的完成,这些背后都是我付出的热情和身边人的支持。当我在新的领域收到赞扬时,我心中满是成就感。除此之外,我还会时不时地看话剧,逛展览,每一次活动都推动着我个人审美培养和对新事物新思考的过程。当然,作为一个可以坐车30km去吃海鲜打边炉的人,我对各种食物相关的——新餐厅,新菜品,新奇烹饪方式有着无限热情。我在每个周末都会去尝试不同的餐厅,上海的多样性给了我许多珍贵的“尝鲜”体验,因为我认为周末就应该被食物所治愈。总而言之,在学校老师的鼓励下,我不功利地培养了自己的兴趣爱好和周末生活方式,这让我独自一个人在上海的学习生活更深刻更特别。生活从来就没有定义,不是别人周末都上补习班我也要上,也不是为了让自己看起来有很多技能而去学新东西,一切没有兴趣和热情支撑的活动都不属于我自己,更不应该被归于“我的高中生活”。

 I, who can't stay idle, hope my life is colorful, full of challenges and surprises. Therefore, when I first arrived in Shanghai for my 10th grade, I found a music studio and an oil painting studio to learn drumming and oil painting. Less than two years of learning drums and oil painting made my weekend fulfilling. With my enthusiasm and the support of people around me, I have completed one after another piece of melody or painting. Moreover, I love to watch dramas and visit art exhibitions from time to time. Every activity improves my personal aesthetic skill and perspectives on new things. Of course, as a person who is willing to travel 30km to try a dish, I have unlimited enthusiasm for all kinds of food and new restaurants, new dishes, and novel cooking methods. With the encouragement my teachers, I cultivated my hobbies and developed my weekend lifestyle, which made my study and life in Shanghai more profound and more special. Life has never been defined. As long as we start with ourselves, we can reap the true life style and value of our own life.

大学申请——人生重要的一次自我审视

 Preparation of application materials -- Re-examine myself

准备申请大学的四个月左右的时间是我高中生活里成长最多,收获最多的一段时间。首先,在活动准备和标化考试准备的过程中,我受尽挫折。刚开始的我总是对自己获得的成绩感到失望,我认为这样的成绩辜负了我自己在过程中的一切投入。我开始自我怀疑,对待差强人意的结果充满愤怒。但是我的申学顾问总是在背后鼓励我,“你的成绩不错呀,不要给自己太大的压力;这只是你高中生活的一个小片段“等等,总之,在她的支持下,我不再回头计较着自己的成绩——既然事情已经过去了,我在过程中也努力了,那就放下这件事情,专注去完成眼前的任务。确实如此,在申请结束之后,我回头想想那段纠结的日子,也没什么大不了的,因为我努力过,坚持过,体验过也有了收获,既然如此,所有的结果都是最好的安排。其次,准备文书也让我重新审视了自己。刚开始在头脑风暴文书主题时,我陷入了迷茫——我觉得自己没什么亮点,也没有什么特别之处可以让我在无数优秀的申请者中脱颖而出,但用Chris的话来讲“参加过印度领导力课程的同学很多,会打架子鼓的同学很多,喜欢通过美食来体验新的文化的同学也很多,但把这三个放在一起,那就只有你一个人。”,听了Chris的话我突然就领悟了,我不需要有什么独一无二的特点和经历,因为我已经是一个独一无二的个体了,我所需要做的就是在文书里真诚地通过一个故事来介绍自己。申请大学必定是一个让人痛苦的过程,但是当我在申请中学会专注自己,专注于当下时,我就已经收获了属于高中阶段的宝贵财富了。我不知道这些心路历程会不会在我的人生中留下浓墨重彩的一笔,但我现在可以清晰地告诉自己,“痛苦”是值得的,是可以换来收获的。

  The four months or so of preparing to apply for university was the time I grew most in my high school life. First of all, in the process of preparing for extracurricular activities and the standardized tests, I suffered all the setbacks. At the beginning, I was always disappointed with the results I got. I thought that such results failed all my efforts and concentration in the process. I began to doubt myself, and was full of anger at the unsatisfactory results. But my application consultant always encouraged me , "You have good grades; don’t put too much pressure on yourself; this is just a small fragment of your high school life." Anyway, with her support, I didn't look back -because it had passed, and I had worked hard in the process, then i should just let it go and focus on completing the present task. After the application was over, I thought about my struggles in those days. It’s no big deal anymore, since I worked hard, persisted, and gained from the experience. In this case, all the results are the best arrangements. Secondly, preparing the paperwork also made me re-examine myself. When I first started brainstorming on the subject of the essay, I was lost-I felt that I had no shining points, and nothing special that would make me stand out, but in the words of Chris, "Many students may have participated in an Indian leadership program, or can play drums, or like to experience new culture through food, but if we put these three together, then you are the only one." After listening to Chris, I suddenly I realized that I didn't need to have any unique characteristics and experiences, because I am already a unique individual. All I need to do is to sincerely introduce myself through a story in the document. Applying for a university is a painful process, but when I learn to focus on myself and focus on the present, I have already reaped the most valuable thing in my high school. I don't know if these mental journeys will leave a strong mark in my life, but I can tell myself clearly now that "pain" is worthwhile and can be rewarded.

总之,上课专心听讲,用新技能丰富课余生活以及自我认可和把握眼前是我高中三年自我提升过程的收获。即将迎来的大学生活也是我高中的收获之一,但不是我人生阶段的某个终点,从高中过渡到大学更像是从一个属于我的熟悉的环境前往一个将会属于我的未知的新环境,一切都会变但是一切归属的主人公不变。我想,带着自己满意的最终成绩,充满能量的生活习惯和自我反思自我认可的能力毕业,最好的高中经历也莫过于此了吧!

  In short, being focused in class, an enriching after-school life,  self-recognition, and living in the present are the fruits of my three-year self-improvement in high school. The upcoming college life is also one of the gains of my high school, but it is not the end of one of my life stage. The transition from high school to college is more like going from a familiar environment that belongs to me to an unknown that will belong to me as well. In this new environment, everything will change but the protagonist is still me. I came to know who I am. This is my wonderful high school experience.
