Editor's Note:

On this Chinese New Year Eve, we would like to share with you two speeches on harvest by our 10th graders. What have you harvested in 2020? What do you plan to harvest in 2021?

"The Truth About Harvest" is by Hannah Cheng; “The Harvest of Braving Your Failures" is by Ting Yu.

 The Truth About Harvest

Ladies and gentlemen, what comes to your mind when you think of “harvest”? Autumn? Grades? Friendship? For me, it's that farmers plant seeds in spring through constant watering and careful attention to harvest the fruits in Autumn. But it’s not just that simple, because even planting requires skills.

Once my mother and I bought two potted dandelions in a gift shop. We each planted one pot and watered them every day. At first my father doubted me. He said I didn’t believe you would remember to water the plant every day. This made me want to prove to him that I could do it. After a few days, my mother’s dandelion sprouted, but mine showed no sign of germination.

Seeing my mother’s potted plant grew so well, I became anxious. I was wondering if I buried the seeds too deep so that the seeds could not grow. So I tried to turn the soil and move the seeds upward. Unfortunately, it seemed that i buried some of the seeds even deeper. Then, I began to doubt if I was not watering it enough, so I started watering it whenever I saw a chance and I didn't stop until the water had leaked into the tray under the pot. Days later, my dandelion seeds still did not germinate. My dad told me to give up since the seeds were already watered to death by me.

Then my mom came to me and analyzed why we had different results. She said although things like watering plants seemed simple, they should be carefully measured. Either too much or too little investment would not work. I know the lesson  is bigger than this. Watering plant is just like maintaining relationships in our life. It requires constant effort, but too much of that might not be a good thing. In a previous friendship, I paid too much effort and tolerated too much. For example,I often hold an umbrella for her on rainy days, so gradually she took it for granted. I lost the ability to say no. Through this dadelion incident, I learned that each one should find his or her self. Even though efforts are made, they don’t ensure a harvest. The key for harvest lies in knowing when to stop and when to continue.

As I reflect on my dead dandelion seeds, I’d like to share with you a quote from Robert Louis Stevenson: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”

Thank you!
