秋季学期就要开始了,开学前,学校为全体教师准备了一系列的学习与培训活动。最令我印象深刻的是Chris校长为我们带来的“教师边界”培训和Sheri Rosen博士带来的“理解学习方式的差异”的讲座。

The fall semester is about to begin. Before the semester started, the school organized a series of learning and training sessions for all teachers. What impressed me most was the session on "Teachers’ Boundaries" brought by Principal Chris and the lecture on "Understanding the Differences in Learning Styles" given by Dr. Sheri Rosen.






教师“边界”培训

Session on teachers’ “boundaries”


8月17日上午,Chris校长在舞蹈房与大家聊“边界”的事。提到边界,最容易想到父母与孩子的“边界”。父母在进入孩子的房间时会不会先敲门,得到回应后才进来,而不是直接推门而入?或是,发现孩子有些异常,父母会不会忍不住打开孩子抽屉里的日记本?要不要让孩子有一个属于自己的空间,保有自己的隐私呢?这些种种,其实都可以用“边界”这个概念来解释。关于“边界”,有太多值得我们去学习、去注意的事情。

On the morning of August 17, Principal Chris gave us a talk on “boundaries” in the school dancing room. When it comes to “boundaries”, we are most likely to think of the “boundaries” between parents and kids. Do parents, when entering their kid's room, knock on the door and get approval before entering, rather than just open the door and go in? Or can’t they help opening the diary in their kid's drawer when they notice something wrong? Should kids have their own space and privacy? All these can be explained by the concept of "boundaries". There is so much to learn and pay attention to about boundaries.

在日常生活中,有哪些“边界”呢?在Chris校长的启发下,老师们给出了各种各样的答案:

What kind of “boundaries” exist in our daily life then? Inspired by Chris, teachers gave a variety of answers.

[文化差异边界]

(boundary of cultural differences)

同样的做法在面对不同文化背景的对象时可能会出现不一样的反应

People with different cultural backgrounds may react differently to the same practice.


[时间的边界]

(boundary of time)

不应当太早或是太晚打扰别人

Don’t disturb others too early or to late in the day.


[空间的边界]

(boundary of space)

保持一个健康的社交距离

Keep a healthy social distance.

 

不难看出,“边界”体现在生活的方方面面。我们每个人在生活中都会与他人产生各种各样的联系。边界感的建立不仅能够不打扰到别人,更是维护自我的一种有力的方式。

"Boundaries" can be found in every aspect of life. Each of us will have all kinds of connections with other people. Developing a sense of boundary will not only avoid disturbing others, but also enable us to protect ourselves.

而作为一名教师,当走进校园,走上讲台,面对学生,也必然会需要建立属于教师的“边界”。

我们必须时刻提醒自己:“我们都是成年人,也是职业人士。作为教职工,我们肩负着家长委托给我们的重大责任,同时我们也要为自己负责,为我们所在的大家庭负责——我们要创造一个安全、健康、互相尊重的环境,让大家庭里 的每个人都可以愉快地生活、学习和成长。我们的行为也是在为孩子们树立榜样,因此我们必须努力给他们树立最好的榜样。”

As teachers, when working on campus and facing students, we must build our own boundaries.

We must always remind ourselves: "We are adults and professionals. As faculty and staff, we shoulder great responsibilities entrusted to us by parents, meanwhile we must be responsible for ourselves and for the community we live in -- we need to create a safe, healthy and respectful environment where everyone in the community can live, learn and grow happily. We are also setting an example for our kids with our own behavior, so we must try our best to the best role models."

“我们首先是孩子们的老师,再是孩子们的朋友。” 

学校每年都会给老师们进行边界培训,帮助老师们树立合适的彼此沟通协作,以及与孩子和家长相处的边界。

"We are the kids’ teachers in the first place, and then their friends in the second." Each year, the school offers teachers one training session on boundaries to help them establish appropriate boundaries for communicating with each other and getting along with kids and parents.






“理解学习方式的差异”的讲座

 "Understanding the Differences in Learning Styles


8月18日下午,Sheri Rosen博士带来的讲座令全体教师受益匪浅。“理解学习方式的差异”——这听起来简单,实际上需要每一位老师用心体悟。

On the afternoon of August 18, Dr. Sheri Rosen gave us a lecture, and all teachers benefited a lot from it. “Understanding the differences in learning styles” sounded easy, but actually it required every teacher to contemplate.

Sheri Rosen首先让老师们分组讨论曾经遇到的那些特别的孩子——他们可能有着常见的行为问题,例如拒绝认真对待作业、社交退缩、焦虑等等,这些行为问题常会让他们被误认为在学校里表现不佳,这种粗暴的认定往往会让这些行为背后深层的原因被忽视,让孩子得不到真正的帮助。

Dr. Sheri Rosen first launched a group discussion among the teachers on those special kids they had encountered -----they might have common behavioral problems, such as refusing to take assignments seriously, social withdrawal and anxiety, etc. These behavioral problems were often mistaken for behaving badly at school, leaving the underlying reasons brashly ignored and kids failing to get the real help they need.


Sheri Rosen博士结合心理学的知识,让我们明白,个体与个体之间千差万别,作为教育者和引导者,我们不能陷入与孩子激烈的权力争夺中,而是去发现和找到出每个个体中存在的不同的潜在特点或障碍,并尝试针对性地为他们提供帮助。

By drawing on the knowledge of psychology, Dr. Sheri Rosen helped us realize that individual students are vastly different from each other, and as their educators and guides, we should not get caught up in a fierce power struggle with children, but instead, we should discover and find the different underlying characteristics or challenges in each individual, and try to provide targeted help for them.


Sheri Rosen博士提到的“学障资优生”,让人很容易联想到电影《心灵捕手》中的Will,他有着极高的数学天赋,却是一个“问题少年”,无法正视自己所拥有的超越常人的能力。发现他的Lambeau老师拿他束手无策,所做的努力全都适得其反,眼睁睁看着一个“天才”浪费天赋。但最终,Sean老师不懈努力,终于找到了Will行为背后的隐藏障碍,帮助Will一步步从童年阴影中走出来。

Dr. Rosen mentioned "gifted student with academic disabilities" in her lecture, which easily made people associate those kids with Will in the movie “Good Will Hunting”, who is extremely talented in mathematics, but is a "problematic boy" who cannot face up to his super talent. Mr. Lambeau, a teacher who discovered him, had no idea what to do with him, and all his efforts had just produced the opposite effects. He could do nothing but watch a "genius" waste his talent. But in the end, Mr. Sean kept trying and managed to find the hidden obstacles behind Will's behavior and helped Will step out of the shadow of his childhood.

每位老师都应该像Sean老师那样,去用心体悟每一个不同的个体,理解他们之间的差异,从而尊重他们所表现出来的不同的学习方式。教育正是这样,我们只有深刻地理解差异、面对差异,才能最终带领每一个孩子都获得灿烂的人生。

Every teacher should learn from Mr. Sean and try to understand each individual and their differences, and thus respect their different learning styles. Education is just like this. Only when we have a deep understanding of their differences and face them can we finally help every kid live a brilliant life.
