Dear faculty, students, parents, and friends:
Good evening!
The upcoming new year will bring us a new beginning. We will finally get rid of the shadow of the epidemic and walk into the long-anticipated 2023 with hope and brighter visions.
Looking back at 2022, all of us have become witnesses of various historic events.
In 2022, we witnessed the cruelty of war, saw the sufferings of displaced people, and realized the preciousness of peace.
In 2022, we entered the outer space classroom, exploring and learning with the astronauts flying in the outer space; a big step up of science and technology brought human beings to a new height.
In 2022, the successful jumps of Su Yiming and Gu Ailing showed the power of youth and the unrestrained potential of life.
In 2022, Messi was crowned King of Soccer and Argentina won the World Cup, which put the whole world in excitement, showing the charm of soccer and sportsmanship.
In 2022, the epidemic left its deep marks and the virus made us pause and reflect; together, we overcame the challenges and welcome the new spring.
In 2022, many historic events happened. "VUCA" (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) can be used to describe some of its features, but it is not sufficient to encapsulate it. Each of us has witnessed this magnificent history, and each of us has contributed our share of wisdom and strength.
In 2022, our community stood the test and carried its members steadily forward like a big ship, and we are grateful to all aboard for their contributions to this community and help with each other.
We would like to thank the students for their volunteer work and selfless love. As the youngest Group Purchase Leader during Shanghai lockdown, Hanxiao Cai served his compound regardless of his heavy academic work. Sean Xu together with his friends initiated a project to help those in need to get the necessary medicines during the lockdown. During online class, Charlotte Li organized her club members to design virtual works to raise money for the "Hope for Pearl" program, which supports poor children’s education. Nearly 30 SHBS teachers and students participated in the environmental protection activity of "Picking Up Cenbu Village", contributing to the clean water and green mountains of our mother planet. In our Thanksgiving Charity Bazaar, out of genuine kindness, SHBS students donated generously to the charitable fund of the school.
We would like to thank the parents for their support. They kept donating books, masks, antigens, disinfection supplies, special funds, etc., showing their love and care for our community. They helped invite dozens of experts and professors (sometimes themselves) to share their wisdom and life experience with our students for the Career Preview Week, the Student Leadership Courses and the Parents’ Forum.
We would like to thank all SHBS faculty and staff, who have been working so hard for this community. Thanks to the co-effort of us all, we once again were spoken highly of by our students, parents, and teachers, selected as the GIA model school in this challenging time. The school has also been awarded the "Most Promising Employer Award", "Outdoor Exploration Characteristic School", "Vibrant and Evergreen School" by the 14th Asian School Construction Conference, "Top 72 International School in China by Forbes", and "Top 100 International School in China by Hurun Education". In addition, the school has also become one of the first board members of "the International School Branch of the China Association for Non-government Education", a member of Shanghai Educational Evaluation Association - Cross-border Education Committee, and once again the selection center of ESDP English Speech Contest in Qingpu District. In addition, more than 120 representatives of well-known educational institutions in Shanghai visited our beautiful campus to discuss and exchange ideas under the theme of "Embrace Uncertainty, Evolve Dynamically". General Principal Bowen Chen also won the title of "Leader of International Education in China". This year, we successfully obtained the qualification to set up A-level courses ", and the college admission result of the class of 2022 also made new breakthroughs: our students got an offer from Johns Hopkins (Top 9 in the USA and the world) along with many other offers from top universities in the UK and the USA,including some top art schools, and the overall scholarship reached a new high. During the EA and ED round, so far our class of 2023 have won offers from Emory University (Top22), Claremont McKenna College (Top9 Liberal Arts College), Davidson College (Top15 Liberal Arts College) and other prestigious universities. These achievements were earned through sweat of our individual students, on top of the hard work of all members of the community and the care and support from all friends of SHBS.
Looking ahead to 2023, every one of us will be a creator.
In 2023, we should have all the more courage to create: a better life for ourselves as individuals, a warmer family, a more harmonious community, and a brighter future. As soccer poet He Wei commented: "Please don't believe that victory is as easy as dandelion on the hillside, but please believe that there is always something beautiful in the world worthy of our best efforts." In the New Year, no matter how the world landscape may change, we will always follow the pattern of education, stick to what we think is right, honor our school and make it respectable, and unswervingly pursue our educational ideology. Let’s join hands to create a better tomorrow, "I" might be insignificant, but "we" are powerful.
I wish you all a happy New Year!
