The meaning of life

Twenty years or so ago, I made the decision to become a teacher. This decision gave my life meaning and was both gratifying and exciting.

二十多年前,我决定当一名老师。这个决定赋予了我生命的意义,既令人满意又令人兴奋。

Jason Burns,是橘郡国际学校(深圳校区)的一名资深外教,是一个在橘郡广受学生家长和老师喜爱的教师,是所有人敬爱的挚友。

Initially I started teaching in Vancouver, Canada, to new immigrants and foreign language students. This is where I understood that I was destined to provide service to all people. It also prompted me to look overseas for an international experience.

最初我在加拿大温哥华教新移民和外语学生。从那时开始,我意识到我注定要为所有人提供服务。这也促使我去海外寻找国际经验。

I moved to Nagoya, Japan, and taught in an international college using my majors of Cultural Studies and Social Geography in order to provide these students with a better understanding of the global society that was emerging.

我搬到了日本名古屋,在一所国际大学任教,教授科目是我擅长的专业——文化研究和社会地理,目的是为了让这些学生更好地了解正在兴起的全球社会。

Jason在橘郡教授的学科有ELA, US History, Peer Counseling 和 Introduction to Sociology (Social Studies)。这些是他所擅长的专业,同时也是橘郡的学生渴望学习的知识。


After five more years, I decided to pursue a diploma in teaching and move to Shenzhen, China. Once I arrived in China I was gifted with the opportunity to join the research and development team at an International English School. I had the honor to work beside many professional educators, many of whom moved on to lead their respective departments at universities in Asia.

又过了五年,我决定攻读教学文凭,并搬到中国深圳。一到中国,我就有机会加入一所国际英语学校的研发团队。我有幸和许多专业教育工作者一起工作,他们中的许多人后来在亚洲的多所大学中引领各自的专业部门。

After co-writing  and editing a number of textbooks published from the Beijing Foreign Press, I moved on to open a number of training schools with two partners. Throughout these years I understood how much determination is needed to provide for students and staff alike. But my calling was in the classroom it seemed.

在共同编写和编辑了北京外国出版社出版的一些教科书之后,我与两个合作伙伴开办了一些培训学校。在这些年里,我明白了为学生和教职员工提供教育需要多大的决心。但我隐隐感觉到教室在召唤着我。

毕业于UBC的Jason,获得了TESOL和TEFL培训师资格证书,还在北京外文出版社出版了自己的M系列英文书籍。他曾受邀去中国各大城市进行轮回演讲,针对青少年学生课程,为全国教师提供专业的咨询和培训。


This next period of my professional career saw me having a number of responsibilities: academic director, training manager, foreign principal, and teacher for kindergarten to high school. This was obviously a hectic time, and I decided to focus my attention on middle to high school.

在我职业生涯的下一段时间里,我承担了很多责任:学术总监、培训经理、外方校长、幼儿园到高中的教师。这显然是一个繁忙的时间,我决定把我的注意力集中在初高中。

Some say, “jump at the opportunity when it presents itself,” and that is what I did. I found an opportunity to interview at OCAHS. I discovered the management and staff to be both passionate and compassionate with their responsibilities to the staff and students alike. My first semester saw me teach students who were honest, open and hopeful about the future. I felt I could make a difference here.

有人说,“当机会出现时就抓住它”,我就是这么做的。我找到了一个机会去橘郡国际学校面试。我发现管理层和老师们对员工和学生的责任心是既充满热情,又富有同情心的。在第一个学期,我发现我教的学生诚实、开放和对未来充满希望。我觉得我可以在这里有所作为。

在许多人看来,作为一名教育者,在职业生涯中到达主管、总监甚至是校长的职位,是最好的事业发展了,然而,Jason却毅然决然地放弃了曾经的这些,选择来到橘郡,做一名一线教师从业者。

Years later I hold onto that teaching dedication to provide for all our students to not only succeed, but also remain hopeful about the future in this global society. A society based on principle, peace, and understanding.

多年后,我坚持这一教学献身精神,使我们所有的学生不仅取得成功,而且对这个全球化社会的未来充满希望——一个基于原则、和平和理解的社会。

For the foreseeable future, I plan to remain dedicated to students, staff and all the people I have the honor to meet. I still have hope the future will be bright as I continue to strive in my chosen profession.

在可预见的未来,我计划继续致力于学生,同事和所有我有幸遇到的人。我仍然对未来充满希望,因为我将继续在我选择的职业中奋斗。
