SAIS Principal

Nathan (Nate) Abbott is a proud husband, a father of 5, and an educator.  He has over a decade of experience in the classroom and over 6 years of administrative experience.  He has enjoyed teaching students from kindergarten to university.  He has a BA in Asian Studies, and an MA in Secondary Education.

Throughout his educational career he has had the opportunity to present and give trainings all over the United States and also had the opportunity to work with and give trainings for the Confucius Institute in Beijing, China.  The topics included Project Based Learning, language acquisition, student engagement, classroom management, and staying in the target language.  He is a deep believer in children and their ability to learn and absolutely loves his job.

All of his children are learning Chinese and he has loved exposing them to the wonders of China.  He is passionate about education and connecting teachers, parents, and students as a community.

    在他的职业生涯中，欧校长曾在美国各地参加过各种培训，其中包括项目式学习、语言习得、学生参与、课堂管理，以及学习目标语言。他也曾有机会与中国北京的孔子学院合作并进行培训，并且能讲一口流利的中文。他深信孩子和他们的学习能力，并且非常热爱他的工作。

    他的孩子们都在学习中文并且喜欢带他们探索中国的博大精深。欧校长不仅非常热爱教育，而且热爱深美大社区的老师、学生和家长们。

SAIS Assistant Principal

Lucy Zeng has worked in international education for over a decade. She is the administrative backbone of  Shenzhen American International School and has been part of the core team that has built the first Project Based Learning school in Shenzhen. She has worked with principals closely during past nine years and was promoted to Assistant Principal in 2020. She has a deep understanding of what administrative needs are required to create a thriving makerspace in an educational setting, as well as educational administration support that is required to produce student success. Lucy has been on the producing team of the School Maker Faire Nanshan for the past five years. Lucy is a strong advocate of PBL, Maker culture, and Design Thinking as she believes these methodologies bring about meaningful learning to students.

Janet Stainton has worked as an early-years specialist for 13 years in China both as a teacher and as Dean of Early years and has a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Studies. As an Early Years professional, she has employed her creative energy and incredible classroom projects to develop in students a life-long love of learning. As the mother of 5 sons, she understands the pressures of parenthood and the desire we each have for our children to succeed in school and University.

Janet has had a life-long love of teaching and her determination is to further enhance the reputation of SAIS early learning department as not just one of the finest in Shenzhen but the finest by further developing the skills of the SAIS Early Years faculty. Janet is excited to give your children a broad educational foundation with opportunities to explore, create and think and to guide them in experiencing the world around them -ensuring their time at SAIS will be a wonderful journey of discovery and development.

SAIS Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Melinda Alford is a whole school curriculum and educational technology fanatic with seventeen years experience serving international schools. The majority of that experience has been in China . She is a Harvard certified educational leader and is ISTE, WIDA, Google, and Apple certified as well as Apple Distinguished Educator.  Melinda is known across Asia as a frequent speaker at conferences such as EARCOS, ACAMIS and  Learning 2.0. Melinda’s experience includes literacy coaching, leading a full library redesign, leading mission/vision teams, technology directorships and much more. She is a recognized expert in accreditation within the China context and also serves as a CIS/WASC accreditation team member. She serves as a charity advisor and consultant to many schools in China. She lives in Shenzhen with her husband Tim who is also an educator and their daughter Audrey.

SAIS Director of Admissions

Geoff has a BA (Hons) in Economic History and English Literature and a Masters in Business Administration from Bradford University School of Management in the UK as well as professional qualifications in International Trade and finance. His background is in manufacturing and has visited more than 50 countries throughout the world advising on production flows in the woodworking industry. For many years he ran his own company manufacturing industrial woodworking machinery before coming to China as a consultant where he was involved in change solutions for factories in the furniture industry. He has lectured at Guangzhou University of Foreign studies in business management as well as Technical Colleges in the UK in business economics and value engineering. Geoff believes strongly that the PBL philosophy of education reflects more fully the realities of 21st working practises and students will gain a fully developed education for the modern world.
