今年的九月开学季,BMH幼儿园的Grace园长迎了她从事教育工作的第32个年头。在幼儿园里,她既是温柔可亲的园长妈妈,也是一位管理清明严谨的大家长。今天,我们与Grace园长约个下午茶,一起来听听她的从教心得。






Grace园长,您是如何走进儿童教育这个行业的?



我大约十三、四岁的时候,就发现自己特别喜欢小孩子,也特别擅长“带孩子”。邻居家的孩子都跟我非常亲近,所以我就很自然地选择了上师范学校,自此后没有离开过这个行业。有人说:“幸福就是做自己擅长和喜欢的工作,并以此为生”,我深有同感。在我还懵懂的年纪选择了儿童教育作为终身职业,毋宁说是这个职业选择了我。




听说您走访过不同的国家学习教育理论与实践,这些经验给您怎样的启发?



我在不同国家了解到的教育形态,都与他们的历史文化和民族性格一致,与他们的现代化发展阶段一致。比如芬兰和丹麦处于北欧严寒的地理环境下,自古以来人们崇尚自然的力量,孩子们从小就在严苛的气候中成长。幼儿园小宝宝的午睡车就放在户外,无论刮风下雪都在户外睡觉,所以孩子们对大自然的适应能力非常强。他们身体健壮、充满活力、敢于挑战和冒险,好奇心和探索欲望被保护得很好,这是非常值得我们学习的。




2014年7月,我带领三名学生赴澳大利亚参加第一届GAIL高中生全球论坛。在为期一周的活动中,来自世界五大洲的年轻人一起聆听社会各界精英的演讲、一起参访社会机构,从多个角度了解“全球化”这一议题。会议的最后一天,所有的同学分成小组,用自己创意、编剧、拍摄制作的小电影反映年轻一代对“全球化”的认识、思考和展望。

同学们拥有不同的面貌和文化特色,但他们展现出相似的风采:高度自信、善于聆听和提出问题、能清晰有力地表达自己的观点、待人友善、高效地分工合作。这次论坛深刻地影响了我对儿童成长和国际教育的理解。未来世界将由什么样的人才来领导?什么样的人能拥有外在的成功和内在的幸福?从逆向的角度地看待儿童教育,我认为在6岁以前,比教给孩子具体知识更重要的是培养他们拥有强健的体魄、坚强的意志、审美的情操、独立的思考、有观点的表达、自信心、同理心及对人的情感关怀未来不可知,但年轻人就是未来。

您有30多年的从业经验,对BMH幼儿园的课程建设有怎样的思考呢?



BMH幼儿园的课程自从建校以来就是以游戏、探究和双语作为最重要的元素,它符合儿童的学习与发展特点,深受孩子们喜爱。我们今年对幼儿园课程进行了重新的梳理,明确我们的教育理念是尊重每一个孩子都是独特的,教育是为了帮助他们发展自己的潜力,成长为最好的自己。我们为孩子们提供多样化的探索机会和游戏环境,以满足他们独特的需要。面向未来,我们将重点关注培养孩子的自我管理能力、沟通与表达能力、合作能力、批判性思维能力和创造力。同时我们也清晰地阐述通过哪些方式来达成孩子全面而优质的发展。以下是幼儿园的课程概览:



课程的设计是静态的,课程实施比设计更具“当下”的意义。我们的老师用一句话表达了他们的理解:“教育,是一棵树摇动另一棵树,是一朵云推动另一朵云,一个灵魂唤醒另一个灵魂。”优秀的课程理念通过老师与学生的互动和情感的影响得以实现。

BMH幼儿园有一支专业、有爱的教师队伍。中外籍老师们在BMH组成一个国际化的学习共同体,中西合璧的儿童教育事业把我们联系在一起。这个学年我们将大力支持并引领老师的专业成长,从而带给孩子们健康、快乐的幼儿园生活及高品质的学习与发展,让他们的童年成为童年最好的样子。

In September this year, Grace, the Head of Pre School, is entering her 32nd year in education. At BMH Pre, she is the loving and caring matriarch of Pre School, and the strict and organized general commander. Today, we are meeting her for afternoon tea to hear her amazing life stories.







Q

Ms Grace, how did you start your early years education journey?




When I was about 13 to 14 years old, I discovered my love for children. And I am great with kids. Children in the neighborhood enjoy spending time with me. I went to a normal school without much hesitation and I never left the industry. People say the happiest thing on earth is doing what you love for a living. I strongly agree. Instead of saying I chose early years education as my lifelong career when I was young, I would rather say that I was chosen by it.

I heard that you have visited many countries to learn their best practices in education. In what way has your experience abroad inspired you?




Each education system has cultural and national characteristics and are in line with their modern development stages. For example, Finland and Denmark have a frigid climate. People there respect nature and believe that children grow best when they are exposed to natural weather. Children take their nap outdoors in trolleys even in wind and snow. Therefore they are very well adjusted to the climate and grow to be strong, energetic, brave and adventurous, which is something that we should learn from.




In July 2014, I traveled to Australia with 3 high school students to attend the first GAIL Convention. Over a week, teenagers from around the world listen to great minds from all walks of life and visit institutions together to deepen their understanding of globalization. On the last day, all students are divided into groups to showcase their understanding, thoughts and outlook of globalization in short films.

The students had different outlooks and cultural characteristics, but they had many things in common: confidence, good listening and questioning skills, clear points of view and assertiveness, friendliness, and efficient teamwork. This convention profoundly influenced my understanding of child development and international education. Who will lead the world in the future? Who will achieve success and happiness? Looking at children’s education now, I believe that a strong mind and body, the appreciation in beauty, independent thinking, clear thoughts, confidence, empathy and compassion are more important than teaching concrete skillsets to children before the age of 6. The future is unpredictable, but young people are our future.

Q

Based on your 30 years of experience, what are your thoughts on BMH Pre School’s curriculum?



Our curriculum has always been play-based, inquiry and bilingual, since the school was founded. It is designed according to learning and developmental characteristics of children and is very well received. We have reformulate our concept to reflect our educational philosophy to embrace each and every child’s uniqueness. Education is a tool to help them tap into their potential and grow into the best version of themselves. We provide diverse opportunities for children to explore and play in environments that meet their unique needs. Looking ahead, we will focus on developing children’s self-management skills, communication, collaberation, critical thinking and creativity. This is an overview of our curriculum which delineates how we will achieve holistic and quality development for our children.



The concept behind this is static. How to implement it will be more dynamic and present-oriented. As one of teachers put it so delicately: “Education is a tree shaking a tree, a cloud to promote a cloud, and a soul awakens another soul.” Great curriculum is brought to life through interaction and emotional influence between teachers and students.
