Deep Learning in Schools and Beyond

In my last column I talked about Deep Work, which is a way of organizing our focus and time to allow for full immersion in meaningful work, while having significant time to cultivate a happy, healthy life. This week I share about Deep Learning,  which is more about how we learn and grow in the world.

What is Deep Learning

A Deep Learning revolution is underway which will change the way we approach knowledgedevelop new skills and create our future.Perhaps the most critical single feature of Deep Learning involves students learning to learn, and being aware of their own development through metacognition (awareness of one’ s own thought process). Another fundamental tenant of Deep Learning is that everyone is everyday a learner. With this approach, we become learning teams, supporting learning schools, empowering learning communities.


  深度学习从明确学习目标开始,重点关注学生的优势和兴趣。根据积极心理学的研究,我们知道建立在学生的学习和性格优势上是一种非常有效的方式,可以激发学生的积极性,并为课堂带来个人意义。VCA SZ校园,我们开始评估每个学生的个性和学习优势。我们还让家长参与这项调查,共同理解如何支持孩子的积极自我意识和能力发展。

Deep Learning begins with clarification of learning goals which are focused on the student’s strengths and interests. Drawing from the research of positive psychology, we know that building on students’ learning and character strengths is a highly effective way to motivate and bring personal meaning to the classroom. At VCA SZ campus, we begin each student relationship with an assessment of their individual character and learning strengths. We also engage parents in this inquiry for a shared understanding in which to support the child’s positive sense of self and development of their competencies.

 

 

深度学习的六大全球能力

  深度学习的六项全球能力,即品格、公民意识、协作、沟通、创造力和批判性思维,可作为学习内容的指南。值得注意的是,这些能力与世界经济论坛关于在第四次工业革命中蓬勃发展所需的十大技能密切相关(见下图)。

The six global competencies of Deep Learning

Deep Learning’s six global competencies of character, citizenship, collaboration, communication, creative thinking and critical thinking serve as a guide for learning content. Notably, these competencies correspond very closely with the World Economic Forum’s ten skills needed to thrive in the fourth industrial revolution (see diagram below).

For the past three decades, communication, creative and critical thinking have been prominent in education methodology which crafts itself to an unknown future we are living into. More recently, creative thinking, citizenship and character education have also become mainstays of innovative educational programming all over the world.

According to the World Economic Forum, creativity has become one of the top three skills because of the explosion of advanced technology, AI, and the demand for new ways of thinking. Character has always been vital for individuals and society to thrive, but with globalization and increased exposure to multiple points of view and mental models, character and related EQ is highly essential for harmonious coexistence and collaboration.


  深度学习也不仅仅是一种方法,而是选择和融合那些为特定教育环境带来最大价值的教学方法。对于某些学习社区和特定课程而言,经典的学习方法在为学生提供知识和技能,以培养对特定学习领域的掌握方面是很有价值的。在许多环境下,让学生参与探究或基于问题的学习(PBL)将变得越来越重要。在 VCA SZ 校区,我们采用经典教育和 PBL,具体取决于课程设置、内容和学习目标。

Deep Learning is also not just about one approach, but rather selecting and blending those pedagogies which bring the most value to a particular educational setting. For some learning communities and particular courses, a classic approach to learning will be valuable in terms of providing students with the knowledge and skills for developing mastery within a given field of study. While for many settings, it will be increasingly important to engage students in inquiry- or problem-based learning (PBL). At VCA SZ campus we employ both classic education and PBL, depending on the setting, content and learning goals.

 

 

深度学习的应用

  几十年来,这种教育方法在国际学士学位和其他课程中得到了广泛接受和深入实践。然而,向6C能力培养的转变现在已经成为一项全球性的运动。“深度学习新教学法”(New Educations for Deep Learning)是一个推动这一运动的组织,它与八个国家的1500多所学校结成了一种快速增长的全球伙伴关系,旨在促进整个体系的变革。

The application of Deep Learning

Much of this education approach has been embraced and deeply practiced within the International Baccalaureate and other programs for decades. However, a shift towards practicing all the 6Cs has now become a global movement. New Pedagogies for Deep Learning--an organization that has catalyzed this movement--is a fast growing global partnership with over 1,500 schools in eight countries to promote whole system change.

As responsible educators, we are engaging students as co-creators which puts them at the center of the learning process as never before. At VCA SZ campus, students will engage with the six global competencies at many levels since these are the key dimensions for learning and growing in this “fourth industrial revolution”.Students will gain awareness of how their learning is integrally connected to and often driven by the global competencies.
