We were very excited to invite our parents to join us for our Coffee morning - English Teaching Programme. We always receive several questions regarding English Teaching and Learning, so we took this opportunity to give parents a clear understanding.
Thanks to our wonderful English MLT team for sharing their practices.
The foundation stage of learning
Mr. Jake introduced a variety of multi-sensory techniques used to build the student’s English ability. He explained that basic English vocabulary and sentence structures are repeated daily to develop understanding.
They also use daily routines to extend the instructional language in the classroom. E.G: Put on your shoes. Where are your shoes? Finally, many concepts like the calendar, the weather, the days of the week, and greetings are introduced through songs. This is a great way to get the children interacting and enjoying their learning.
Mr. Henry discussed some of the great strategies used in K2 to encourage confidence in each student, like front-loading vocabulary as well as giving them tools and strategies;
all of which promote student agency by giving them a voice and a choice. When the students feel they are leading their learning they are more confident to speak about it!
Adding the finishing touches
Mr. Jameson shared information on our Jolly Phonics Curriculum and how it encourages reading and writing in K3. Jolly Phonics teaches letter sounds in an enjoyable and multi-sensory way (through stories, songs, and hand or body movements)
With the teaching of the five basic skills the children develop confidence and effective reading skills; and the ability to recognise and recall letter sounds and communicate with confidence.
Ms. Joy ended the presentation by sharing a few tips for parents on how to support learning at home. The most important is that progression is needed to develop the children’s understanding. It is important to understand that each child does not fit into a box and they may not all be at the same level of learning.
To help each student progress to their next step in their learning journey teachers offer differentiation in their classrooms focused on the children's individual levels. It is important not to compare the student's levels. Each child's development is different and they each have a different background in the language. The focus is on supporting your child to reach the next level in their learning journey. Remember to provide plenty of opportunities for them to practise and improve their English skills!
With so much information shared we hope all parents have a bit more understanding of English Teaching and Learning. We thank everyone who came and supported a successful Coffee Morning. We look forward to continuing our learning journeys together; showcasing our supportive community!
