(William Blake)

  2. 《老母亲哈伯德》

    --萨拉·凯瑟琳·马丁(Sarah Catherine Martin)

  3. 《夏日在床》

    --罗伯特·路易斯·史蒂文森(Robert Louis Stevenson)

  4. 《现在我们六岁了》

    --艾伦·亚历山大·米尔恩(Alan Alexander Milne)

  5. 《蠕虫》

    --伊丽莎白·麦道克斯·罗伯茨(Elizabeth Madox Roberts)

04

(The Giving Tree)

  • 《画了一匹蓝马的画家》(The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse)

  • 戴帽子的猫 (The Cat in the Hat)

  • 要是你给老鼠吃饼干 (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie)

  • 贾巴里,跳!(Jabari Jumps)

06

阅读知名作家所撰写的故事

例如艾瑞·卡尔(Eric Carle,《画了一匹蓝马的画家》的作者),苏斯博士(Dr. Seuss,《帽子里的猫》的作者),朱莉娅·唐纳森 (Julia Donaldson)和劳拉·努梅洛夫 (Laura Numeroff)。

07

出去户外读书

去当地的图书馆或书店,浏览各种各样的书籍。书籍的海洋丰富多彩,大家积极探索并保持好奇心!

I'll begin this article by sharing one of my favourite poems written by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Bed in Summer

In winter I get up at night,

And dress by yellow candle-light.

In summer, quite the other way,

I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see

The birds still hopping on the tree,

Or hear the grown-up people's feet

Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,

When all the sky is clear and blue,

And I should like so much to play,

To have to go to bed by day?

This poem was written by a famous Scottish writer from the United Kingdom. It is one of favourite poems as it captures the moments of summer beautifully. While the children are taking a break from school, it is a great opportunity to encourage their reading at home. In this article, I have listed some of the ways you can support your child's reading during the summer holidays.

We know how important it is for our students to gain a love of reading. And the best way to do this is encourage children to read for pleasure. Research shows that reading for pleasure can be linked to developing children's success throughout their time at school. Reading for pleasure helps children to gain an understanding about the world they live and expand their knowledge.

There is no limit to what children can choose to read during the summer. One day it can be an article about the Life Cycle of a Frog and then it can a book written by Dr. Suess's. When children spend time reading, they begin making links between letters and sounds. Reading also provides children with an opportunity to learn new vocabulary and develop their imagination.

*Dr. Seuss:Theodor Seuss Geisel,  was an American children's author and cartoonist. He is known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss.

Below, I have created a list of suggestions to help support your child's reading at home during the summer:

01

Read and talk about books.

Set aside time every day to read and talk about stories that interest your child. Ask meaningful questions that start with What?, Why?, and How? to help your child understand stories on a deeper level.

02

Listen to (and sing) songs and rhymes.

Dr. Seuss books provide witty and funny stories in rhyme that grab children's attention and develop language skills.

03

Learn a simple poem together.

Poems develop language skills such as vocabulary, rhythm, and rhyme. Here are five classic summer poems for children:

  1. "The Tiger"

    --William Blake

  2. "Old Mother Hubbard"

    --Sarah Catherine Martin

  3. "Bed in Summer"

    --Robert Louis Stevenson

  4. "Now We Are Six"

    --Alan Alexander Milne

  5. "The Worm"

    --Elizabeth Madox Roberts

04

Create word clouds.

With older children, try creating word clouds where you can write words from the books you have read. This is a great way to learn new words. Children can share their word clouds with their teachers over the holidays.

05

Start a reading log.

Draw a template and write down the names of books, articles, or magazines which you read over the summer. Children can share their logs with their classmates and teachers at the start of term. Here is a list of captivating short stories to start your reading log:

  • The Giving Tree

  • The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse

  • The Cat in the Hat

  • If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

  • Jabari Jumps

06

Read stories written by famous authors.

Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss, Julia Donaldson, Laura Numeroff.

07

Take your reading outside your home.

Make a trip to a local library or a bookstore - browse through a wide range of books.  There is so much out there. Explore and stay curious!
