Midnight Madness
For days, weeks, months, and maybe even years to come, our students will still be talking about Midnight Madness. Our semester-opening event started with a bang – or maybe more aptly – with a spray of water and a water balloon to the face. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Midnight Madness was an International Baccalaureate inspired event organised by the grade eight class, aided and abetted by Mr Davidson, Ms Xu and other middle school teachers. The grade eight class were inspired by last years camping event ‘A Night To Remember’ and wanted this year’s event to be bigger, better, and more memorable. Our International Baccalaureate theme was How We Organise Ourselves but we also wanted the opportunity to incorporate the Approaches to Learning: encouraging self-management skills, thinking skills and communication skills for all participating students. With these concepts at the forefront of our minds, we started planning.
The first thing that had to be decided was how the event will run. After much discussion, the grade eight class decided that students would have the opportunity to visit different rooms in the school, all with different stations in them run by grade eight class members and the international faculty. We had a kinaesthetic and athleticism zone, a spatial awareness room, a culinary experience room, a visual arts room, a Chinese culture room, a logic and reasoning room, and a linguistic and interpersonal room. All of these rooms were guided by the principles of how we organise education and gave the students who participated the independence and agency to explore their different intelligences.
The grade eight class assigned themselves roles to complete this task: President, Vice-president, Chief Financial Officer, Secretary, Head of Purchasing, Graphic Designer and Marketing Officer, and Communications Officer. The class decided on the tasks that needed to be completed and delegated these tasks to different students. They made and designed t-shirts, tickets and posters; wrote letters to teachers, students and parents informing them of the event; recorded and edited a video inviting the students to the event; made a map of the different areas where activities will be taking place; bought all the equipment necessary to do each activity and distributed these to the teachers on the day.
On the day of the event, all the participants came to the library after school. Mr Davidson and Ms Mabel gave a welcome speech, and explained how the event will unfold throughout the night. Maps of the event were handed out and food orders were taken before the inaugural water fight began. This allowed the participants to have freedom and develop their self-management skills. It was also and opportunity for our students to show they are risk takers and are good communicators, making pacts and teams amongst themselves.
After the water fight, we all sat down to a meal together. Breaking bread as a big family and forming new friendships was the highlight of the night. Once they had eaten, the participants scampered to play in the different activities.
The kinaesthetic and athleticism zone was overseen by Mr Carson and Mr Reece. They had two different sports to play, and while the light lasted, they encouraged students to show us what they are made of.
The logic and reasoning room was run by Mr Jose, who had devised a number of interesting challenges to test the students’ ability to solve problems and they definitely rose to the challenge.
The spatial awareness room was run by Mr JJ who had a series of video games specifically designed to challenge and improve cognitive functions, spatial awareness and logical reasoning skills. This room was very popular amongst all the students!
The culinary skills room was also very popular. Run by Ms Kathy, Ms Chloe and Mr Robin our students were given the opportunity to improve their listening skills, practice their communication skills, but more importantly taste the fruit (or should I say dumplings?) of their labour.
The visual arts room was run by Ms Mary and Mr Spencer. This room was always crowded and the participants were able to express themselves through art and design. The Chinese culture room was run by Ms Mabel where our participants could make and design Chinese masks, and discuss the importance of their Chinese heritage.
Finally, the linguistic and interpersonal room was run by the grade eight class who had prepared many games for the participants to enjoy in order for them to improve these skills.
At the end of the night, the students enjoyed some other activities and games together, such as dancing and hide-and-seek. These games brought a sense of comradery to students across grade levels; new friendships were forged, and old friendships strengthened.
The success of the night was down to the diligence and tenacity of the grade eight class, and to the hard work and dedication of the teaching faculty. Without our wonderful teachers this night could not have happened. Students and teachers alike are still talking about Midnight Madness and I know this will be the talk of the school for weeks to come.
We hope to see you all again next year!
