Dear SIS Families,

At SIS, we place high importance on reading proficiency as it is a foundational skill that impacts academic success across all subjects. Reading is closely linked to our Approaches to Learning (AtL), such as  critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

This week, our teachers in Kg-G5 engaged in an onsite workshop with Erika Olson from Erin Kent Consulting. This is her second visit to SIS primary this school year. In grade level teams, teachers continued to engage in research about reading, observed and discussed demonstration lessons, (re)learned and practiced effective strategies for reading, and planned future lessons for their classes.

In class, teachers guide students to use valuable strategies and knowledge on reading, phonics, word structure, vocabulary development, skills, comprehension to support multilingual learners.

This professional learning is also happening in our Mandarin department, with Aiqin Li visiting for the second time next month. This collaborative effort between consultants, our teachers, and our literacy coaches will continue to enhance the high quality of engaging and rigorous education we provide to SIS readers. We continue the work in enhancing the positive reading culture at SIS ultimately paving the path towards educational achievement and personal growth of our young Geckos.

Erika is leading a Family Reading Session at Level 5 tomorrow. The registration is now full. Please watch out for future parent workshops.

In an exciting collaboration with other IB educators, the PYP Exhibition kick-off event brought together students from four different schools to embark on a shared journey of inquiry and discovery.         

The PYP Exhibition, a culminating experience in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, was put on a spotlight through last week's kick-off event. Students and teachers gathered in a spirit of excitement and anticipation, ready to embark on a journey that would challenge their thinking and broaden their perspectives. The event featured interactive workshops, team-building activities, and opportunities for students to get to know one another.

Students from the four schools worked together in mixed teams, pooling their knowledge, skills, and cultural backgrounds. They engaged in meaningful discussions, shared insights, and developed a deeper understanding of the chosen theme.       

Teachers and school leaders collaborated closely to ensure a seamless and enriching experience for all participants. The joint efforts resulted in a cohesive and powerful showcase of student learning and growth.

In addition to the kick off event, G5 parents were invited into attend the ParentEDU on "Understanding the Exhibition" whereby they engaged in an activity where they shared their passion while learning about the Exhibition. The presentation slides will be shared via Seesaw with G5 parents.

在与其他IB教育工作者激动人心的合作中，PYP项目成果展览启动仪式将来自四所不同学校的学生聚集在一起，开始一段共同探索和发现的旅程。

PYP项目成果展览是国际文凭小学课程的终极体验，在上周的启动仪式上引起了广泛关注。学生和老师们兴奋而期待地聚集在一起，准备开启一个挑战思维、拓宽视野的旅程。这次活动以互动研讨会、团队建设活动和促进学生相互了解为特色。

来自四所学校的学生组成了一个多元化团队，他们汇集了各自的知识、技能和文化背景。在这个团队中，他们进行了有意义的讨论，分享了彼此的见解，并对所选主题有了更深入的理解。

教师和学校领导紧密合作，以确保所有参与者都能获得无缝而丰富的经验。通过共同努力，这个团队展示出强大凝聚力并促进了学生的学习和成长。

除了开幕活动，五年级家长还受邀参加“了解展览”的家长讲座，他们在了解展览的同时分享了自己的热情。展示的幻灯片将通过Seesaw与五年级的家长们分享。

This week, our G3 classes went on a field trip to the Shenzhen Wildlife Park. Our Geckos had the opportunity to explore the Central Idea " Organisms and their environment influence each other over time", and they were able to closely observe and apply what they have learned about animal traits and characteristics, habitats, and life cycles. As you can tell from the happy faces it was a great experience for all!

本周，我们的三年级班级去了深圳野生动物园进行实地考察。壁虎们有机会探索中心思想“生物和环境随着时间的推移相互影响”，他们能够仔细观察和应用所学到的关于动物特征、栖息地和生命周期的知识。从大家笑脸上可以看出，这是一次非常棒的经历！

Field trips provide an opportunity for young learners to see, touch, hear, and interact with the world around them, making learning more engaging and meaningful.

The purpose of our field trip to Neobio was to provide Prek 1 students with an engaging and interactive learning experience in a different yet sensory rich environment. The trip aimed to promote socialization, creativity, and exploration among the children. Here are some questions used to help the students reflect on their trip:

• What activities did you enjoy the most at Neobio?

• What play pits did you explore? What did you find there?

• What kind of books did you see in their library? Which one was your favorite?

• What jobs did you learn about at the vocational center?

• Did you enjoy playing in the ball pit or the sand pit more? Why?

• What did you learn about teamwork while participating in the activities?

• How did Neobio make learning fun for you? What did you learn during the field trip?

Field days are eagerly anticipated events in the academic calendar, and they hold particular significance in the early years. Early Years Field Day is a delightful occasion that combines outdoor play, physical activities, and educational experiences tailored to young children. It provides a wonderful opportunity for children to explore, engage, and learn while enjoying the fresh air and freedom of the great outdoors.
