Dear SIS Families,

Last Friday we had our first FamilyEdu where parents and students came together to participate in our reading workshop.  This was led by Erika Olson, a consultant from Erin Kent Consulting,  which is our partner for growing reading at SIS.   This FamilyEdu gave an opportunity for parents to work with their students on comprehension strategies, building a reading life, and sharing some of their favorite books.  Families participated in a read aloud, creating a family reading plan and reading books from the SIS library that were displayed around Level 5.

Parents learned some practical questions that they can use when talking to their children about books. They learned strategies like starting a family book club to enhance and improve reading at home.  Erika also shared with us the difference between a 5-minute per day reader reading 282,000 minutes by grade 6 and a 20-minute a day reader having read 1.8 million minutes by the end of grade 6. The difference is over 1.3 million minutes!

We encourage families to keep up the strong literacy practices by reading at home for at least 20 minutes a day. Remember reading can be done in any language and is not limited to English.  Read a favorite book together in English, Chinese, Korean or in your home language to help build a reading life and vocabulary! 

Come to our library and borrow books for the family. Just a friendly reminder that the library is open from 7:30-4:00 to check out books.

上周五，我们举行了第一次家庭教育活动，家长和学生们一同参加了我们的阅读工作坊。这个活动由Erin Kent咨询公司的顾问Erika Olson带领，该公司是我们在SIS阅读增长方面的合作伙伴。这次家庭教育活动为家长提供了一个机会，与孩子一起制定理解策略、建立阅读生活并分享一些他们最喜欢的书籍。全家人一起大声朗读，并制定了属于自己的家庭阅读计划，在SIS图书馆中挑选了适合5年级左右孩子的书籍。

家长们学到了一些实用的问题，可以用来与孩子谈论书籍。他们还学到了一些策略，例如开办家庭读书俱乐部，以提高和改善家庭阅读。Erika Olson还与我们分享了每天阅读5分钟的读者在六年级时总共阅读282,000分钟，而每天阅读20分钟的读者则在六年级结束时总共阅读180万分钟。

我们鼓励家庭保持强大的读写能力，每天至少在家阅读20分钟。请记住，阅读可以使用任何语言进行，不仅限于英语。无论是用英语、中文、韩语还是母语一起阅读一本喜欢的书，都有助于建立阅读习惯和扩充词汇量！

This week, our G2 scientists presented their landforms exhibition at Level 5. They showcased and presented their individually-crafted 3D landform models, constructed as part of their Unit of Inquiry on "How the World Works".

The Grade 2 students showed their creativity, knowledge, and dedication into crafting various landform models found around the world. With the help of their models, they demonstrated their understanding of the geographical features, processes, and significance of different landforms.

Thank you to all the parents, teachers, and students who added to the excitement and enthusiasm in the exhibition room. Our Grade 2 students received valuable feedback, encouraging them to reflect on their work and further enhance their understanding.

本周，我们的G2科学家们在Level 5教室展示了他们制作的个人3D地貌模型，作为他们“世界如何运作”探究单元的一部分。

二年级学生展示了他们的创造力、知识和奉献精神，制作了世界各地不同地貌的模型。通过这些模型，他们向我们展示了对于不同地貌的地理特征、过程和意义的深入理解。

感谢所有在展厅中融入了兴奋和热情的家长、老师和学生。我们的二年级学生受到了宝贵的反馈，这激励着他们对自己工作进行反思，并进一步提高他们的理解水平。

Our Gecko readers will be on a full reading mode as we celebrate Book Week next week. We are very pleased to welcome Matthew Holm as our visiting author. Matt is a celebrated author and illustrator who travels around the world and share his passion about writing. We are keen for our students to meet him next week.

In addition, Book Week events will include:

This month of March, students connected with their parents and community members to show how to be tuneful, beatful, and artful citizens.

This was demonstrated through our Music Open week where we worked on our yearlong “Who We Are” unit with the central idea that a caring and secure environment connects all learners to our community. Parents and students engaged in singing songs, telling stories, dancing, and playing instruments together. 

This cultivates an appreciation of our diversity, furthering our understanding of each other and the music we learn around us. Students were very knowledgeable of the music curriculum and helped showcase this to their parents.              

这个三月，学生与他们的父母和社区成员联系，展示如何成为一个有调性的、节奏感强的、有艺术感的公民。

这通过我们的音乐开放周展示，我们致力于为期一年的“我们是谁”单元，中心思想是一个关爱和安全的环境将所有学习者与我们的社区连接起来。家长和学生一起唱歌、讲故事、跳舞和演奏乐器。

One of the most important experiences that libraries provide is an opportunity to develop a love of books and reading. Our students have been reading the Panda Book Award nominees in the library and they voted for their favorite ones.

Many students from other international schools in China participated in voting and helped decide which books would be the winner.

图书馆为我们提供了一个培养对书籍和阅读热爱的重要机会，其中之一就是让我们的学生在阅读熊猫图书奖提名书籍时投票选择自己最喜欢的。

A representative from Shenzhen Mangrove Wetland Foundation received the 3115 RMB donation raised from FIP Prek1/2 art auction. Many thanks to our young artists and donors! This will go a long way towards protecting mangroves in the city.

深圳红树林湿地基金会的代表收到了FIP Prek1/2艺术拍卖筹集的3115元捐款。非常感谢我们的年轻艺术家和捐赠者！对于保护城市红树林来说，还有很长的路要走。

Last week our Grade 4 entrepreneurs finally opened their pop-up restaurants! After weeks of preparation, planning and practice, G4 welcomed their fellow Geckos and parents to their restaurants. There was an eclectic collection of dishes and flavors on offer, ranging from Korean style kimchi pancake and bibimbap, to unique sausage spaghetti, followed by the sugary sweetness of M&M cookies and Oreo milkshakes. 

The G4 Restaurants were incredibly successful, and all the restaurants successfully repaid their loans to Ms. Leda, in addition to making over ¥9000 profit! Before Restaurant Day, G4 identified Karuna Rescue, a local animal rescue organization here in Shenzhen, as their designated organization to which they would donate their profits. 

It has been another successful learning and service at SIS, and we are very proud of our young entrepreneurs. Thank you all for your support!

上周，我们的四年级的创业者们终于开张了！经过几周的准备、计划和练习，四年级学生们热情欢迎他们的Gecko同伴和家长们来到他们精心打造的餐厅。这里提供各种美味佳肴和口味多样选择，从韩国风味的泡菜薄饼和韩式炒面到别具一格的香肠意大利面，再到甜甜蜜蜜的M&M饼干和奥利奥奶昔。

四年级餐厅取得了巨大的成功，所有的餐厅都成功偿还了Ms.Leda的贷款，并且还赚取了9000多元的利润！在餐厅日之前，四年级的学生们确定了深圳当地的动物救援组织Karuna Rescue作为他们指定的组织，他们将向该组织捐赠他们的利润。

这是SIS又一次成功的学习和服务，我们为我们的年轻企业家感到骄傲。感谢大家的支持！
