3月29日,武汉爱莎外籍人员子女学校小学部举办了英语语言艺术杯,同学们期待已久,兴奋之情溢于言表。比赛共分为三个板块,需要学生们综合运用听、说、读、写技能。通过激烈的比拼,共有9名同学获得了奖牌和奖杯。

On March 29th, ISA Wuhan International School (ISAWHIS) Primary held an English Language Arts Cup. The students eagerly awaited the event, and their excitement was palpable. The competition was divided into three parts, requiring the students to use their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. After intense competition, nine students were awarded medals and trophies.

四年级的获胜者Joshua开心地分享道:“我非常喜欢这个比赛,尤其是Spelling Bee这个环节紧张又刺激,有一个单词我反复修改了几次才拼写正确,之后我还是需要多多巩固。”Joshua也热心地向同学们传授学习经验,要多向老师提问,在家时也要利用IXL和MyOn多阅读,做一些quizzes,这样能提高词汇量和阅读速度。

Joshua, the fourth-grade winner, happily shared that he really enjoyed this competition, especially the spelling bee div, which was nerve-wracking and exciting. He shared that there was one word he had to revise several times before spelling it correctly, and he still needed to practice more. Joshua also generously shared his study experience with his classmates, encouraging them to ask more questions to their teachers, read more using IXL and MyOn at home, and take quizzes to expand their vocabulary and improve their reading.


三年级的Ava说:“虽然我没有得到奖牌,但这个比赛很好玩,我的好朋友Anna获得了金牌,我很为她感到骄傲!“主班老师Philip表示,很欣慰地看到学生们都在尽自己最大的努力去完成比赛,更让人感动的是整个比赛的过程中大家都在互相帮助,那些没有获奖的孩子们也能够为同伴们欢呼喝彩,这是难能可贵的。

Ava, a third-grade student, said that “although I didn't receive a medal, the competition was fun.” Her good friend Anna won the gold medal, and she was very proud of her! The homeroom teacher, Philip, expressed satisfaction in seeing the students putting forth their best effort to complete the competition. What was even more heartwarming was that throughout the entire competition, everyone was helping each other, and those who didn't win awards were still cheering for their peers. This is truly precious.

IB的全人培养目标始终贯穿在日常教学中,孩子们胸襟开阔,懂得关爱在这场比赛里也展现地淋漓尽致。比赛本身不是目的,而是作为一种形成性评价的方式,让孩子在玩中学英语,及时巩固和反思,提升学习兴趣。

Holistic education at ISAWHIS extends beyond just learning and developing in the classroom and is put into practice in real life and this competition! The children have broad horizons and understand the importance of caring for others, which was fully demonstrated in this competition. The competition itself is not the goal but rather a formative assessment that allows children to learn English while playing, consolidate and reflect on their learning in a timely manner, and enhance their interest in education.

At ISA Wuhan International School (ISAWHIS), we use England’s National Curriculum (ENC) Framework from kindergarten (EY1) to Grade five for multiple subjects, including the English language. We utilize multiple Cambridge English textbooks supporting the achievement of England’s National Curriculum (ENC) learning objectives and the stream of English language ability the students are in: Cambridge Primary English, Cambridge Global English, Cambridge Grammar and Writing Skills, etc.

But they will also develop multiple skills, labeled as approaches to learning. Including but not limited to thinking, research, social, communication, and 21st-century skills.

As ISAWHIS values every learner's talent, ability, and effort, we personalize the learning. The English instruction is personalized by differentiating the classroom placement, activities, homework and giving students agency (voice, choice, and ownership) during the learning process.

Agency is given by having set success criteria that facilitate the achievement of England’s National Curriculum (ENC) objectives while enabling students to choose the lens through which they inquire or work during projects, activities, reading, classwork, and homework. By giving English language learners agency, they are more empowered and driven to progress and learn! Some platforms that support student agency, homework, and the development necessary to achieve the ENC learning objectives are MyON for reading and a digital library and IXL for English and Mathematics.

As students often need additional support, we have a learning support program with professional learning support teachers to push into classrooms or pull-out students for remediation or further challenges. Students that are significantly above or below the standard expected of them in their grade are offered personalized support that helps them either quickly return to grade level or continually challenge students to achieve at higher levels.

The English Language Arts Cup was a wonderful experience for the children that heightened their interest in English and increased their motivation to study and learn in and out of the classroom!  The fun English activities won’t stop there, though! Next month, we will have a month-long experience titled “Around The World in 28 Days” with multiple fun activities and experiences. This event will focus on reading at home and at school! We look forward to sharing the exciting reading activities with you the whole month of April!V
