Starting in September 2022, LEH International School Foshan will offer the prestigious Advanced Level Qualifications Programme (A Level) for our Sixth Form students. This will enable LEH students finishing their IGCSEs to continue their top-level British Education in Foshan in Years 12 and 13.

从2022年9月开始，佛山市霍利斯外籍人员子女学校将开启英国普通中等教育证书考试高级水平课程（A Level）的教学。已经完成IGCSE阶段的霍利斯学生将会直接进入A Level阶段的学习，继续在佛山霍利斯享受优质的英式国际教育。

To learn more about the two-year A Level programme, we interviewed Ms Sara Saavedra who will join LEH Foshan in August 2022 as Head of Academics and Head of Spanish. Ms Saavedra will oversee A Levels at LEH which will provide students the opportunity to stretch their academic interests and specialise in areas they might wish to pursue at university and beyond.

Ms Sara Saavedra has been in the teaching and education industry in the UK and Dubai since she attained UK Qualified Teacher Status at the University of East London in 2013. She is a very experienced teacher of Spanish, and her last post was Head of Spanish and IB Coordinator in a well-regarded British international school in Dubai. Ms Saavedra has worked in both IB and British curriculum schools and gained profound insights into IB and A Level programmes from which our students will benefit.

A Level (Advanced Level qualifications) is a prestigious British subject-based qualification for students aged 16 and above that empowers students to be independent learners and give them the opportunity to especialise in specific areas. Students study over two years, leading to qualifications recognised for entrance to universities and other higher education institutes in the UK and many other countries worldwide. 

A Level（英国普通中等教育证书考试高级水平课程）面向16岁及以上的学生，培养他们成为具有独立能力的学习者，并帮助他们为日后进入特定领域学习打下基础。通过两年的学习，学生们将参加A Level考试，考试成绩备受英国和世界许多其他国家的大学和其他高等教育机构认可。

Students typically study a minimum of three subjects. Subjects include English Language & Literature, French, Maths, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Psychology, Economics, Art, Information Technology and Modern Foreign Languages such as Chinese and Spanish. 

学生们通常需要至少学习三个科目，科目选项包括英语语言和文学、法语、数学、生物、物理、化学、历史、地理、心理学、经济学、艺术、信息技术和现代外语，例如中文和西班牙语。

Written examinations are the main assessment form and students sit them at the end of the 2-year course of study. There is now less project work, however, some coursework does still contribute to the final grade depending on the subject. 

学生们将在两年的教学课程结束时参加考试。考试形式以笔试为主，现在较少有项目作业作为考试形式，然而有时候课程作业也会影响最终考试成绩，具体情况取决于所选学科。

The importance of the final written exam means that A Levels are more suitable for students who feel comfortable in written exams. Most importantly, students receive separate certificates in each subject they pass, rather than one overall certificate as the IB.  

在A Level考试中，最终的笔试成绩占据很大比例，这意味着更适合擅长笔试的学生。最重要的是，参加A Level考试的学生每个科目都能获得一个单独的证书，而不像IB那样只能获得一份各科汇总的证书。

The A Levels help prepare students for university all over the world and not only in the UK. They are a great introduction to the study habits, the rigour and the deep content knowledge required at university. In the UK they have been designed as university entrance exams, nevertheless, they are widely valued all over the world and they will allow you to have a smooth admissions process.

凭着A Levels成绩，学生们能够申请许多国家的大学，而不是仅仅只是英国。A Level课程能够培养学生的良好学习习惯和严谨的学习态度，提升他们对学科知识了解的深度，为他们日后在大学学习打好基础。在英国，A Levels相当于是大学的入学考试，在其他许多国家，A Levels也受到广泛的认可和重视，通过A Levels申请大学，能够让学生的升学之路更加顺利。

The A Levels offer a curriculum that allow you to specialise. Other pre-university programmes focus on providing a broad education whilst A Levels allow you to focus on a few subjects that relate to the course you want to study at university. 

A Levels更有专度。A Levels课程能够让学生就升学相关的特定学科领域深度探索和学习，而其他大学预科课程很多都着重于教学的广度。

It is also important to think about the students’ future professional career now and many employers do have a clear understanding of A Levels. A solid set of A Level results, in addition to a degree, will help you stand out from other candidates. A Level will show to employers that the student has the ability to perform consistently and to meet international standards of excellence.

A Levels对学生的未来职业生涯也有一定的影响。许多企业雇主现在都对A Levels有所了解，除了大学学位证书，亮眼的A Levels成绩单也能帮助学生从候选人群中脱颖而出，因为A Levels能够向雇主证明，该申请人有稳定的学习表现，以及他/她的能力能达到国际认可的优秀标准。

I was born in the sunny Canary Islands and I am a British and Spanish national. I did not arrive to the world of education straight after university rather I worked as an opera singer for 10 years. During my time at university while studying music I also became fascinated about languages and travelling so when I transitioned into a new career, I made sure that it would involve languages. I enjoy cooking – too much for my own good – and trying out new recipes so I hope to learn new ones here in Foshan. 

我出生于阳光明媚的加那利群岛（Canary Islands），是英国也是西班牙的国民。我在大学毕业后并没有直接投身教育界，而是成为了歌剧歌手，一做就做了10年。在大学学习音乐期间，我开始对语言和旅行感到着迷。所以在职业转型的时候，我选择了语言相关的职业类型。我也很喜欢烹饪—大多情况是为了满足自己对美食的追求—并且喜欢尝试创新自己的食谱，所以我希望从佛山粤菜中汲取灵感。

For the next step in my career, I want to work in an institution that is at the forefront of approaches to teaching and learning and that strives to achieve academic excellence. I look forward to be working with passionate subject teachers and boarding house members to ensure that every student flourish and fulfil their potential. LEH Foshan is a growing school which will open its 6th Form next year and I thrive with challenges and new projects so I am very much looking forward to implementing the A Levels with our 1st cohort of graduates as I did in my previous school.
