Mike,你好!恭喜你刚刚获得加州大学洛杉矶分校录取通知书!你从小在青苗长大,大家都知道,你的兴趣非常广泛,音乐、摄影、运动、电影制作等方面都有涉猎,这些爱好非但没有影响你的学业,反而为你的学业锦上添花,成为更加精彩的自己。很想知道你是如何做到如此“全能”的呢?


答:谢谢老师,我倒没有觉得自己有多么全能。我觉得我是有个“insatiable appetite”:永远不满足的胃口。初中时期,当我开始对社会和世界有了一些认识时,就发现自己想要探索的领域特别多,而自己愿意像海绵一样无限地吸收。


后来随着学业的增多,也让我学会做减法,忍痛割爱暂时搁置了一些爱好。只有音乐一直坚持着,毕竟有朝一日能靠做独立音乐来养活自己是我的一个梦想。很幸运地是,在青苗,IB学习很注重艺术及个性的培养。现在想想,我很感谢学校独立自主的学习方式和多种多样的展示平台,给了我无限广阔的成长空间。


另外我想提到的是,时间管理能力很重要。你需要清楚你每天的目标是什么、怎么做、何时去做。一旦你制定了明确的计划,安排好了自己的时间,你就需要严格跟着计划走,确保计划执行期间你不分心,不走神。这样你才会最大限度地利用时间。

都说IB课程是目前最难的课程之一,但是看到你几乎连续三年门门满分的成绩,很想知道作为一名学霸,你是如何看待IB课程的?


答:IB在我看来已经不仅仅是一种课程,而更像是一种生活哲学。IB 学习者简介中就提到所有IB的学习者要做探究者,知识渊博的人,思想者,沟通者,有原则的人,思维开阔的人,关爱他人的人,冒险家,懂得平衡的人,自省的人。这些特点,我认为是我可以信奉一生的理念,是我一直需要致力去追求的。


在这种理念下的IB 课程,就特别强调包容性和批判性思维。在IB课程中,我们很多课程都是强调跨学科学习。一个数学问题,我们会用经济学、社会学,甚至的物理学的角度去解读。这样的学习会让我们更好地适合大学以及以后步入社会的生活。


从小学一年级开始在青苗就读,至今已经是第12个年头了。在这里我曾经历过快乐起航的PYP小学课程和丰富充实的MYP中学课程,现在紧张忙碌的大学预科DP课程也要接近尾声了。可以说,IB教育造就了今日的我,也将继续影响我未来的人生。



Q

在培养和发展个人爱好方面,能不能给学弟学妹们一些建议?


答:也谈不上建议,有些我觉得自己受用的一些经历,想分享给学弟学妹们。正如我刚才提到的,很多我音乐方面的成长,都是在学校的课堂里收获的。因此我的第一个建议就是利用好学校的资源。第二个,就是寻找一些志同道合的朋友,无论是运动,音乐和艺术,如果能找到伙伴一起,自己往往有更多的动力和热情。在青苗我很幸运地遇到了这些人,我们一起组成了Jazz Band。我们在很多大大小小的校内外的场合表演过,有过磨合期,渐渐地大家培养出了一种无与伦比的默契和友谊。


传统观念认为游戏、电影、电视、体育和社交这些娱乐项目会影响学业,所以不少家长总是劝诫自己的孩子多学习,少瞎玩。但是对于开明的学校和家长而言,适当恰当的放松和娱乐反而会促进孩子情绪的调适,有利于提升孩子的创造力和学习能力。


我的经验是课余爱好与个人特长也是展示个人特色与风采的一个重要机会,建议大家在思考人生目标时也多考虑自己的兴趣爱好或特长,把文艺体育娱乐等方面的自信转移到你的学术生活中去,充分利用学校为我们提供的各种展示平台,挖掘自己与众不同的一面,它们会在将来为你带来意想不到的助力!

Q

Mike – congratulations on your UCLA offer! Being with BIBS since G1, we know you have a lot of extracurricular interests while doing very well academically. How did you manage to have it all?


A: Thank you. To have it all was never the plan, but I find myself with an insatiable appetite. I started exploring the world around me during junior high and I realized that I was interested in so many different fields.


With academic pressure built up, I learnt to give up some of my interests. Music was one I decided to keep though. Afterall becoming an independent musician has been my dream. Luckily at BIBS, IB cares about our development in art and other personalized fields. I think I have been very fortunate that the school’s independent learning environment and multiple platform provided me with a lot of space to grow.


On the other hand, good time management is important. You must make your daily objective clear and be aware of how to achieve them. Once a plan is set, you must stick to it and stay focused, which is apparently the only way to make the best use of your time.



Q

IB is one of the most difficult curricula in the world, yet you managed to ace all courses three years in a roll. What do you think of the IB courses?


A: IB is not only a curriculum program but also a life philosophy. It requires a learner to inquire, be knowledgeable, think, communicate, be principled, open-minded, loving, risk-taking, balanced and self-reflecting. These are good philosophies for life which can be pursued for a lifetime.


IB curriculum requires inclusiveness, critical thinking and interdisciplinary learning. We often paraphrased a mathematical problem from economics, sociology or even physics point of view. This type of learning has prepared us well for our future academic career and social life.


Since G1 I have been with BIBS for 12 years, from the happy start of PYP, thru MYP and all the way to the end of DP. IB education has made me who I’m today, and it will continue to influence my future life.

Do you have any advice for future BIBS graduates on developing personal interests?


I developed my interest in music from my classroom. So I would suggest everyone to make the best use of the resources at school. Friends are very important too as they bring you energy and passion for your interests, no matter in sports, music or art. I’ve been so lucky to meet my Jazz Band members at BIBS. We played in many occasions both at or outside school. We developed so much friendship from all the time spent together.


Traditionally people believed that video games, movies, sports and socialization have bad impacts on a student’s academic career, and many parents restrict their children from such activities. But schools and parents with sophisticated education philosophies know how to release student’s pressure and inspire creativity and learning abilities with proper extracurricular activities.


I think my personal interests provide me opportunities to present myself. I recommend everybody to respect and value their interests and use the confidence built in those activities to study better. Our school provide so many platforms for us to present ourselves. You will find them very helpful!
