When we talk about Boarding, these are some common questions from parents:


-My child is too young, and I assume he can’t take good care of himself. How will the school develop my kid’s independent ability?


-My daughter has never been away from home for such a long time. What if she cannot fit in? Will boarding might influence parents and children to drift apart?


-My child is going to high school. Can the boarding arrangement support her in both academic study and CCAs?


For more enquiries, Mr. Richard Beddoes, Head of ISA Wuhan Boarding and Ms. Julie Jones, Deputy Head of Boarding, held an online information session on August 5th to talk about the Boarding Staff, Pastoral Care, Boarding Curriculum, Parental Communication and facilities.

Richard graduated in Physics and Geology in 1992 from Staffordshire University UK and has a background in both education and business, including 8 years teaching English and Physics in boarding schools in China and South Korea. He moved to China with his wife Julie Jones in 2014, completing his international PGCE from The University of Nottingham. He has helped to develop new school campuses and high-quality boarding provision in several successful international schools in Suzhou, Wuxi, and Jinhua.

Julie graduated in English Literature and History from Staffordshire University UK in 1997 before obtaining her PGCE and QTS from Keele University. She has more than 20 years’ experience as an English teacher, house and boarding leader and as a senior leader in the United Kingdom and East Asia. She has led as housemistress and head of year in well-known international schools in China, South Korea, and Malaysia.

John is a graduate of Technology Education from the University of Sunderland UK and has rich and extensive experience of international education in several countries. He has taught Computer Studies in international boarding schools in Shanghai since 2004, is married and has a son Calvert who is a student at ISA Wuhan. John has many years’ experiences of supporting primary and middle school students and enjoys encouraging students to explore ways that technology can support and enhance their learning.

Unlike traditional boarding schools in China, the school employs an international team of professional boarding staff, all of whom receive ongoing professional training, are accredited, and authorised by the British Boarding Schools Association and meet the standards. 


As well as looking after students and ensuring their safety, ISA's boarding teachers are also responsible for the pastoral care and well-being of students. In addition to the care of students' pastoral care, they are also responsible for their emotional well-being and sense of belonging and value in the House.

Mr Beddoes: “Our professional multinational, male and female boarding staff act as role models for students but students themselves are also encouraged to act as role models, particularly for younger students. This is one example of how students develop and understanding of their responsibility to others. Students will also develop resilience, the ability to ‘bounce back’ after failures, to push themselves to try something new, for example a new sport or activity, to go beyond their ‘comfort zone’ in the knowledge that they have the support of the boarding community.”

Numerous studies have shown that students who are involved in boarding programmes from an early age are better prepared than day students for the challenges of university, career and life in general. 寄宿部不仅仅只是一个睡觉的地方。作为一处多元文化融合的小社群,学生们将充分体会‘集体力量‘的意义。许多曾是寄宿生的人都认为自己从寄宿项目中获益良多,譬如学会尊重、包容他人,接纳更多存在,在帮助他人中获得成就感并获得有效的支持,能更好的回馈寄宿部这个社群,提升自我价值。


Boarding is far more than a place to sleep. It is a space where students and staff build a community, where the ‘whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. Many adults who have had a boarding life as a student reflect on the extra things, they gained from living in boarding, such as the knowledge and pride that they played a part in building a community where they learnt that we have differences, but everyone felt valued and supported and they learned important lessons about respect for themselves and others.

4.锻炼社交技能与独立能力

寄宿项目有助于锻炼学生的社交技能与独立能力。那些取得卓越学术成就的学生往往都具有健全的品格与社交技能。寄宿生们将学会如何打理好自己的生活,与他人分享空间,譬如寄宿生们需要为第二天的学习做好充分的准备。

A key element of our boarding programme is the personal and social development of students. The link between this and academic success is well-proven and students who are most successful academically are often those who have well-developed personal and social skills. Our boarding routines and careful record-keeping ensure that students learn to organize themselves and their personal and shared spaces. 


For example, they will need to make sure they are prepared for the next day at school and that they have everything they need. Students will learn to manage their time, by making sure they are punctual and use their study time and relaxation time productively. There is a ‘work hard, play hard’ philosophy in the boarding house that encourages students to focus on their academic studies but also to ensure they are active and physically healthy.

在每个学年,寄宿部将在各学院之间举办各式各样的竞赛与活动,不断培养学生的团队协作能力。这些活动涉及学术、体育或者创意等多个领域,例如篮球、音乐、数学、艺术、舞蹈等。寄宿生们也可通过参加学生会,培养领导力与沟通能力,与管理团队一起,参与寄宿部事务的决策,掌握话语权


Students will have many opportunities to develop teamwork skills during their daily boarding life but also during activities such as practicing for the many house events and competitions that occur throughout the school year.


These will cover many aspects of student life; academic, sporting, and creative. For example, basketball, music, mathematics, art, dance and many more. Students will also have opportunities to develop leadership and communication skills through organisations such as the student council, where students are chosen to represent the ‘student voice’ in regular meetings with the boarding management team.
